CAIRO: Eleven Sudanese migrants and a Libyan driver were killed Friday in a car crash in the desert in Libya, authorities said, the latest tragedy involving Sudanese fleeing a civil war in their home country.
The crash between the migrants' vehicle and a truck happened early Friday in the desert, 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of the Libyan town of Kufra, the town's Ambulance and Emergency Service said in a statement.
The dead included three women and two children, the service's director Ibrahim Abu al-Hassan told The Associated Press.
A 65-year-old man and his 10-year-old son were also wounded in the crash, he added.
It was the latest deadly incident involving Sudanese migrants in the Libyan desert.
Earlier this month, seven Sudanese were found dead after their vehicle broke down in the desert. The vehicle broke down in a path used by traffickers between Chad and Libya, leaving 34 migrants on board stranded for several days in the desert.
Libya was plunged into chaos following a NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed long time autocrat Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
It has become a main transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East to seek better lives in Europe.
The country shares borders with six nations and has a long coastline along the Mediterranean.
Human traffickers have benefited from more than a decade of instability, smuggling migrants across Libya's borders with six nations, including Chad, Niger, Sudan Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia.
Thousands of Sudanese have fled to Libya since April 2023 after simmering tensions between the Sudanese military and a powerful paramilitary group exploded into street fighting across the country.
The conflict in Sudan has turned into a civil war that killed thousands people, displaced over 14 million, and pushed parts of the county into famine.

Arms seized from ISI-backed gang in Punjab

Arms seized from ISI-backed gang in Punjab AMRITSAR: Amritsar Police intercepted a cache of arms and ammunition and arrested five persons on Sunday. SSP, Amritsar-rural, Maninder Singh, said police have dismantled a major trans-border smuggling network of sophisticated arms and drug money, operated by Pakistan's ISI-backed handlers. Among the seizures are an AK Saiga rifle with two magazines, two Glock 9mm pistols with four magazines, 100 rounds of ammo, and Rs 7.5 lakh in drug money, apart from a car and three mobile phones, police said. The intercepted consignment was intended to be delivered to Nav Pandori, a known associate of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, indicating a broader terror-gangster nexus, police said. Those arrested have been identified as Jobanjit Singh alias Joban, Gora Singh, Shenshan alias Shahu, Sunny Singh alias Gana, and Jaspreet Singh alias Motu. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had direct links to Pakistan-based operatives, said the SSP.

Boat capsizes in Nigeria's Niger state, at least 25 people feared dead, authorities say

Boat capsizes in Nigeria's Niger state, at least 25 people feared dead Abuja, Jul 27 (AP) A boat transporting passengers to a market in north-central Nigeria capsized, killing at least 25 people, authorities said Sunday. The accident happened Saturday near Gumu village in the Shiroro area of Niger state, Ibrahim Hussaini, an official with the National Emergency Management Agency, told The Associated Press. Hussaini said search and rescue efforts were underway, but are limited because armed gangs mostly control the area. He added that the number of casualties may rise. "Very few people can go to the scene because of banditry in that area," he told the AP. Armed groups, commonly referred to as bandits, have stepped up attacks in recent months in the north-central region, complicating rescue efforts. The accident is the latest in a series of deadly boat accidents on Nigerian waterways, where accidents are common in remote communities, especially during the rainy season, due to overloaded and poorly maintained vessels. In September last year, a boat carrying mostly farmers capsized on a river in the northwestern state of Zamfara, drowning at least 40 people. At least 326 people died in boat accidents in Nigeria in 2024, according to a count by TheCable, a local media outlet. Analysts say many boats operate without life jackets and blame weak enforcement by regulatory authorities.(AP)

Spanish Teen Being Investigated Over Nude AI Images Of Classmates

Spanish police said Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. The probe was launched after 16 young women at an educational institute in the Valencia region came forward to complain of AI-generated images of them circulating on social media and the internet. The first complaint was lodged in December by an adolescent who said an AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her "completely naked" were posted on a social media account started under her name. As more accusations came in, police suspected the images were the work of a student in the same institute, according to a statement by the police. Tracking the IP addresses used to create the bogus accounts led them to the home of the 17-year-old now under investigation on suspicion of corruption of minors. It is not the first time that Spanish authorities have detected AI-created pornographic images of minors. The government in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime. The bill, which Madrid claims to be a first in Europe, has yet to be passed by the parliament.
