Hun Sen calls Thaksin out, reveals historic role in Thai politics

Straits Times21-07-2025
Mr Hun Sen said he is not interested in speaking with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, after the latter told Thai media that he has stopped communicating with the former Cambodia prime minister.
'I want to tell Thaksin that it should be me who should not want to talk to you, ever since your daughter was arrogant and looked down on me. Moreover, I have no interest in speaking with someone who has been convicted and is preparing to face additional charges. So, do not think too highly of yourself – talking to you only brings me trouble!' Mr Hun Sen wrote in a Facebook post on July 20.
On July 19, Thaksin declared that he was determined to stop communicating with Mr Hun Sen, citing fears of his conversations being secretly recorded. He also urged the Thai authorities to complain to the UN regarding a landmine explosion that injured Thai soldiers earlier that week, according to Thai media outlet Khaosod English.
'From my observation, since Thaksin became involved in Thai politics, Thailand has been in great turmoil, starting before the 2006 coup. I also do not want to bring up the severe insults you directed at the Thai monarchy – those words were too vile for me to repeat, as they would only tarnish the dignity of the Thai King. But you acknowledge that they are true,' Mr Hun Sen added.
He added that a few days ago, Thaksin called Cambodia's leader immoral, an insult as grave as the one made by his daughter, Ms Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who referred to the Cambodian leadership as 'unprofessional', sparking anger among the Cambodian public.
'I want to ask you, if I lack morality, why did you rely on me for 19 years, from 2006 to 2025, constantly listening to my advice and even calling me 'Leader Number One'? Do you remember the formation of the Pheu Thai Party to contest the 2011 elections? Apart from some ideas, there was a theory: 'Thaksin thinks, Pheu Thai acts.' That was my theory, Hun Sen's theory, which I shouldn't have to remind you of,' he added.
He also revealed that Thaksin was the mastermind behind the Pheu Thai Party and that the betrayal of the Bhumjaithai Party was Thaksin's idea, not that of his daughter, who is currently suspended from her role as Thai Prime Minister. THE PHNOM PENH POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Thailand plans 18.5 billion baht stimulus spending and will compensate border conflict casualties

[BANGKOK] Thailand will spend 18.5 billion baht (S$736 million) on stimulus measures to support the economy as it braces for the impact of US tariffs, and will compensate families of those who died in last month's border conflict, officials said on Tuesday (Aug 5). The stimulus measures approved by Cabinet are aimed at enhancing economic competitiveness and supporting student loans, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat told reporters. The government still has about 25 billion baht of funds to use to mitigate the impact of US tariffs and for broader relief efforts, Julapun said. The US last week set a 19 per cent tariff on imported goods from Thailand, lower than the 36 per cent rate announced earlier this year and more aligned with other countries in the region. Julapun said Cabinet gave the government approval to prepare a joint statement on tariffs and trade with the US, but said discussions were ongoing and there was no set signing date. On Tuesday, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce said it expected the economy to grow 1.7 per cent this year. That is below both the finance ministry's revised forecast of 2.2 per cent growth in 2025 and last year's actual growth of 2.5 per cent. The Cabinet also approved a 10 million baht payment to the families of government officials who died in the July conflict with Cambodia, while those injured will receive up to one million baht, government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap told a briefing. Families of Thai civilians who died during the conflict will each receive a payment of 8 million baht, he said, while the injured would receive up to 800,000 baht. REUTERS

Israel to allow gradual and controlled entry of goods to Gaza through local merchants

Israel will allow gradual and controlled entry of goods to Gaza through local merchants, Cogat, the Israeli military agency that coordinates aid, said on Aug 5. 'This aims to increase the volume of aid entering the Gaza Strip, while reducing reliance on aid collection by the UN and international organisations,' the agency said. On Aug 3, Hamas said it was prepared to coordinate with the Red Cross to deliver aid to hostages it holds in Gaza, if Israel meets certain conditions, after a video it released showing an emaciated captive drew sharp criticism from Western powers. Palestinian and UN officials said Gaza needs around 600 aid trucks to enter per day to meet the humanitarian requirements - the number Israel used to allow into Gaza before the war. The Gaza war began when Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostage in an attack on southern Israel on Oct 7, 2023, according to Israeli figures. Israel's offensive has since killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials who do not distinguish between fighters and non-combatants. According to Israeli officials, 50 hostages now remain in Gaza, only 20 of whom are believed to be alive. Hamas, thus far, has barred humanitarian organisations from having any kind of access to the hostages and families have little or no details of their conditions. REUTERS
