Stalin flags arrest of 7 fishermen by Sri Lanka, urges Jaishankar to take steps for their release
At present, 232 Tamil Nadu fishing boats and 50 fishermen are being held by the Sri Lankan authorities, and action should be taken to get the fishermen and their boats released, the CM urged the Centre.
In the early hours of July 13, seven fishermen, along with their mechanised fishing boat were taken into custody by Sri Lankan Navy, Stalin conveyed to Jaishankar in a letter.
On the same day, in a separate incident, another mechanised boat is reported to have been struck by a Sri Lankan naval vessel, causing significant damage to its stern (ship's back portion).
Such recurring incidents are deeply alarming. They not only pose a grave threat to the safety and livelihoods of fishermen but also subject their families to prolonged economic hardship and emotional distress.
The chief minister said: 'To compound the grim situation, many of the fishermen apprehended in the year 2024 continue to remain in Sri Lankan custody. At present, 232 Tamil Nadu fishing boats and 50 fishermen are still being held by the Sri Lankan authorities.' Furthermore, he said: 'In the above situation, I urge the Union Government to engage all available diplomatic channels to bring an end to these continued apprehensions. I further request that urgent and effective steps be taken to secure the release of all detained fishermen and their fishing boats at the earliest.'

CM Stalin rolls out door-delivery of government schemes across TN
CHIDAMBARAM: Chief Minister M K Stalin launched the 'Ungaludan Stalin' (With You, Stalin) scheme in Chidambaram, Cuddalore district, on Tuesday which aims to conduct 10,000 camps across the state by November 2025 to make the government's welfare schemes accessible to the public through door-to-door outreach. Volunteers in each district will go door-to-door, distributing pamphlets containing details on available services, application forms, eligibility criteria, and list of documents required to apply. They will also identify and assist women who are eligible for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme but have not applied yet. On Tuesday morning, Stalin participated in an event commemorating Kamarajar's birth anniversary at a Government Girls Higher Secondary School. He also unveiled the renovated bronze statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in Pettai, Chidambaram, the release stated.

Narasimha Rao Learnt 17 Languages, Including Hindi: Chandrababu Naidu Amid Debate
Amid the ongoing language debate, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao knew 17 languages, including Hindi. While delivering a lecture on 'The Life and Legacy of former PM Shri PV Narasimha Rao', Naidu remembered him as a great statesman and visionary the Telugu community is proud of. Naidu said he had a "very good equation" with him. "He was a student leader, a freedom fighter, a scholar fluent in 17 languages," Naidu said, referring to Rao. "Now we are all talking, why should you learn Hindi? Not only he learnt Hindi, he has learnt 17 languages. That is how he has become a great man," he said. The remarks come amid the ongoing language debate. The three-language formula under the National Education Policy has faced opposition in states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Several leaders from the southern states have also alleged 'Hindi imposition' by the Centre.

Samagra Shiksha: Kerala to explore legal options over delay in central funds
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government will explore legal options regarding the denial of central funds to the tune of Rs 1,466 crore to Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) for nearly two years, allegedly due to non-implementation of the National Education Policy. Senior education department officials will meet Advocate General K Gopalakrishna Kurup on Thursday to discuss the issue, sources said. A decision has been made to approach the court. 'The officials will meet the AG to finalise the appropriate legal platform,' said a senior official. The denial of funds for two years has left the students in a lurch. Distribution of orthopaedic equipment for children with disabilities, textbooks, uniforms and travel allowances have been pending for long. The Union government has not released funds to SSK since the second half of the 2023-24 academic year. No reason has been cited for the delay. The SSK, however, is conducting therapy for autistic children and other basic activities through funds from the state and local self-governments, sources said. But nearly everything else has come to a standstill. Fund crunch has crippled many projects, says official Earlier, the implementation of many centrally sponsored schemes under the National Health Mission were affected in the state, due to a delay in central grants. The state has been locked in a major dispute with the Union government over the latter insisting on branding of schemes funded by the Centre. In the case of SSK, non implementation of NEP could be the reason for non-issue of funds, said officials. 'No official reason has been cited for the delay. But as per unofficial communication, fund allocation has been affected due to non-implementation of NEP,' a top education department official told TNIE. The funds are supposed to move through the PM-SHRI (PM-ScHools for Rising India) scheme, which falls under NEP. Fund shortage has severely crippled many projects, said SSK officials. 'Inclusive education, RTE entitlements, vocational education projects, learning enhancement activities have all been severely affected due to the lack of funds,' said SSK state project director Supriya A R. Generally, SSK receives 60% of funds from the centre and the remaining from the state. Even tha payment of salaries to employees is in crisis due to the state's financial situation. Department officials have discussed with the finance minister the allocation of additional funds to provide salary.
