Four fire engines, the coastguard and an ambulance scrambled to tackle the blaze, with all crew accounted for.
Locals have been told to keep their doors and windows shut as vast plumes of smoke continue to billow into the sky.
Humberside Fire and Rescue were called to the scene at 10:22am after a fire started in the cargo hold.
A BBC reporter identified the ship as the Altay - a bulk carrier built in 2006.
An ABP spokesperson said: "We are currently aware of a fire on a vessel in Albert Dock in the location of a tenanted area, and we are assisting the fire service with the response."
Hull City Council has confirmed that Commercial Road, Kingston Street, and shops on Kingston Retail Park have been closed due to the incident.

I have a repair policy with Currys but it will not fix my fridge freezer – now I'm £360 out of pocket
Got money problems? We can help fight for your cash back or challenge the way firms operate. Email money@ ASK ADELE I have a repair policy with Currys but it will not fix my fridge freezer – now I'm £360 out of pocket Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Q. I PAY £36 a year for my Currys Care and Repair plan for my fridge freezer. The policy says that if my fridge stops working Currys will come and fix it within seven days, if not, I could get a replacement. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Consumer Champion Adele Cooke solves your money issues In October, my fridge developed a fault and would not keep my food cold. I called Currys and it sent an engineer to check what was causing the issue. After a few days I called Currys again and a man came to my home to fix my fridge. He said it couldn't be fixed so Curry would send me a new one. But I haven't heard anything from them since. I really needed a working fridge so I contacted another company. I paid £360 for a new fridge freezer, which was delivered the next day. I've wasted £36 and am now hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Can you help? Kathryn Cudmore, Lincolnshire. A. Your plan with Currys promised care and repair but you received neither when your fridge unexpectedly stopped working. I was disappointed to hear that Currys had fallen below its usually high standards. The Care and Repair policy promises breakdown support when you need it. Once you have signed up you should be able to contact Currys as soon as a device breaks. The company is so confident in its ability that if it takes more than a week to repair your appliance then you can get a replacement for free. Meanwhile, if the device can't be repaired then Currys will give you a gift card so you can get a new one. This is what you were told when the repair man came to your house. Despite these promises Currys left you out in the cold - which was more than could be said for your fridge freezer. I wanted to get your issue resolved as soon as possible so I put your case to Currys. A spokesperson apologised and said it was not the level of service Currys prides itself on. You have been sent a cheque for £333.32, which includes the value of the voucher, refund for your policy, original delivery, installation charges and the cost to recycle the old product. I am so glad the money is back with you. It is always worth complaining to a company if its service falls below the levels you were promised. Make a note of the date and time you made any calls to a company's customer service. You should also save any letters or emails you receive to use as evidence. Squeeze Team total: £223,150. ‘It's a miracle he survived', hillwalker plunges 160ft in horror sheer drop fall on Scots mountain

The man in his 30s fell from a precarious ledge over 1600 feet up an iconic Scottish mountain. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 The man in his 30s fell from a precarious ledge over 1600 feet up an iconic Scottish mountain Rescuers said he faced a sheer drop fall with 'almost certain fatal consequences'. The man was with a group on Gearr Aonach, the middle of the Three Sisters range in Glen Coe. But he fell in an area known as The Zig Zags last weekend. Five members of Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team were scrambled while another rescue was happening at the same time in Glen Etive – and what turned out to be the third in a day. 'He fell on a vertical drop of 164 feet,' said deputy team leader Brian Bathurst. 'It has become a particular accident blackspot – with three call outs recently to that same spot. It appears people are misjudging the junction. 'He hit a ledge on the way down and suffered multiple injuries and was in a critical condition. It is a miracle he survived. It is very rocky terrain. 'Where he fell has almost certain fatal consequences. He was very lucky indeed.' An Inverness-based coastguard search and rescue helicopter flew the walker to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. His condition is unknown but is no longer life threatening. Watch shock moment couple cheat death as they fall off 5,000ft mountain while taking risky shortcut to avoid queue The team was so short-handed that day that veteran rescuer Ronnie Rogers, who is in his 70s, helped out with the Glen Etive rescue involving a man who suffered broken ribs after falling into a burn. 'Knowing we were going to be short handed, Ronnie once again laced up his boots and raced into the Glen to help despite the fact that after 50 years he officially 'retired' from front line team duties in November 2022,' added Mr Bathurst. 'He is a legend. Since stepping back, Ronnie has helped with team callouts by calling team members on the phone to deploy them to incidents so was well aware that help was needed that day. 'We would like to wish all the casualties well in their recovery and as always a huge thank you to the helicopter crews and everyone else involved.'

Gardeners MUST carry out essential task if they want to get thick, bushy & super green lawns that last all summer
LAWN AND ORDER Gardeners MUST carry out essential task if they want to get thick, bushy & super green lawns that last all summer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MANY people want thick, luscious lawns in their garden, but it can be tricky to achieve with hot weather and weeds springing up. One green-fingered whizz has shared an essential task you should do to get great results that last all summer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 A woman has shared how she managed to transform her lawn from being patchy Credit: Facebook 4 She got her lawn looking luscious using an essential gardening task Credit: Facebook 4 Westland Triple Care currently costs £10 on Amazon Credit: AMAZON A fellow gardener had made a plea for help after using Westland Triple Care on their grass, which they claim left it looking 'patchy.' Taking to the Facebook group Gardening on a Budget Official, they shared: 'What on earth! 'The grass was a little patchy and had some moss. 'I used this last week after spending two days using an aerator. 'The state of the grass now..... 'It wasn't like this before using this box of destruction! 'This is my first post on here and some help or advice would be appreciated. What should I do now.' Thankfully the gardening fan had some words of advice to save the day - and said that Westland Triple Care, which is £10 on Amazon, did actually work for her. They explained that it is aerating that 'does that' to lawns, but you need to 'water at least half an hour a day after using the seeds' to revive it. She explained the same thing had happened to her, and said: 'Mine was aerated. I was gutted, cried for a week. 'I waited till it was warmer as done in March, then I seeded, used two large boxes as did back and front. The four easy steps to get your tired lawn lush for summer & you don't need to worry about pigeons ruining it either 'I put the sprinkler on every morning at 7 o clock and every evening at 9 o clock. 'Once you get all the dead stuff up, sprinkle more, see and wait. 'Mine took 6 weeks of true dedication. 'I watered whether it rained or not as lawns are dry as a bone two inch down. 'All is not lost, good luck.' 4 She claimed watering your lawn every day with the seeds will get super green grass Credit: Getty The upset gardener thanked her for her help and said he would 'water, water, water' his grass. The Westland Triple Care lawn feed is said to 'nourish your grass but also tackle weeds and moss head-on.' It is said to create 'a strong and healthy lawn', with greening visible within seven days - if used between the months of February and October.
