It sails under the flag of the Marshall islands. Several local shops and businesses have had to close due to the incident. Tina Riches, who manages HWM Van Hire, said she was forced to shut her business after hearing a warning alarm at the port. She told the BBC: 'We've had to contact our customers that they won't be able to get here and the police say we might have to be evacuated.' Cases and hearings were also suspended at Hull Combined Court and Hull Magistrates' Court following the blaze. More Trending HM Courts and Tribunals Service said: 'Cases due to be heard at the court have either been adjourned or moved online. 'We will reschedule any adjourned hearings as soon as possible.' Ship on fire in Hull dock - shops and roads closed
Crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue are tackling a blaze on a ship docked in Hull. The service said it was called to Albert Dock at 10:22 BST and four fire engines, an aerial platform, Hull Coastguard Rescue Team and an ambulance are in attendance. The fire started in the cargo hold of the vessel, which was carrying scrap metal, and people were on board but have all been accounted for, a spokesperson for the fire service added. Local residents and businesses have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed. A plume of smoke is visible across the city centre and shops and roads have been closed. Dale Baxter, a BBC reporter at the scene, identified the vessel as the Altay - a bulk carrier which has been docked in the city since 23 June. He said: "It is quite remarkable. There is an enormous plume of smoke pouring from the ship. "It looks like it is coming from near the bridge and the wind direction is pushing it towards the city centre. "The smell is awful." According to Vessel Finder, a website that tracks the status of ships, Altay was built in 2006 and flies under the flag of the Marshall Islands. Hull City Council has confirmed Commercial Road and Kingston Street have been closed as a result of the incident. Shops on Kingston Retail Park will also be closing due to smoke, the authority said. Turkey Aims for $6 Billion Weapons Deal With Saudi Arabia
(Bloomberg) -- Turkey's government is hoping to reach a $6 billion defense deal with Saudi Arabia that could see the kingdom buy warships, tanks and missiles, according to Turkish officials familiar with the matter. What Happened to Hanging Out on the Street? Vienna Embraces Heat Pumps to Ditch Russian Gas Billionaire Developer Caruso Slams LA Leadership Over Wildfires How Sanctuary Cities Are Preparing for Another Showdown With Trump Hoboken PATH Station Will Close for Almost a Month on Jan. 30 A deal — including Saudi Arabia joining a Turkish jet-building project — could be finalized during a visit President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to make to the kingdom around March, the officials said. Turkey is trying to grow its defense industry and sees Saudi Arabia, one of the world's biggest importers of arms, as a key market. The two countries signed a deal in 2023 for the Saudis to buy high-flying drones from Turkish company Baykar. Now, Ankara wants to sell its main battle tank, called Altay, to Saudi Arabia along with missile defense systems, the officials said. In addition, it's keen for Saudi Arabia to become a parter in a Turkish program to develop a fighter jet known as Kaan. While the first test flight happened early last year, it's still expected to take several years to become operational. Other countries may also join the project — in which BAE Systems is involved — in some form, according to the Turkish officials. Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to visit Saudi Arabia this week and will likely discuss the deal, the officials said. The Saudi government didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Turkey's Defense Ministry declined to comment. Ties between Riyadh and Ankara have improved in recent years after being strained by the 2018 killing at the hands of Saudi agents of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. --With assistance from Christine Burke.
