Kerala high court grants 15-day emergency parole to life convict to get married

Time of India4 days ago
Kochi: A high court bench of Justice P V Kunhikrishnan has granted 15 days of emergency parole to K P Prasanth of Thrissur, a life convict in the high security Viyyur prison, to facilitate his marriage.
The parole petition filed by Prasanth's mother. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by HC in April 2025 for the murder of P G Deepak, a Janata Dal (United) office bearer in Thrissur.
Prasanth's marriage was scheduled for July 13. However, an application submitted by his mother seeking emergency leave was rejected by the jail superintendent who cited that the prison rules do not provide for emergency leave for the convict's own marriage.
This prompted her to approach HC.
In support of her plea, Prasanth's mother produced a photograph from the betrothal ceremony and submitted that both families had mutually agreed to conduct the marriage on July 13. She also stated that despite Prasanth being sentenced to life imprisonment, the bride stood firm in her decision to marry him.
HC appreciated the bride's stand and extended its blessings for a happy life. It accordingly granted parole to Prasanth for 15 days, from July 12 to 26. The court also quoted the renowned American poet Maya Angelou: "Love recognises no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope."

Probe in bribery FIR against HDFC Bank CEO transferred to EOW: Mumbai Police to HC

The Mumbai Police Monday informed the Bombay High Court that the investigation in the FIR against HDFC Bank Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan based on a complaint by Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMM Trust) has been transferred to EOW. The HC was further informed that the probe by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) was at a preliminary stage. The police also orally assured the HC that no summons will be issued to Jagdishan until the next hearing. The magistrate court in Bandra on May 29 had directed the Bandra police to register offences punishable under sections 406, 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The magistrate had ordered the probe on the basis of a complaint by trustee Prashant Mehta. Two days later, the Bandra police registered the FIR against Jagdishan and six others who were erstwhile trustees. According to the complaint, after assuming office, Prashant Mehta found a diary showing that between March and June 2022, sums adding up to Rs 2.05 crore were transferred to Jagdishan on the directions of Chetan Mehta, who was a trustee at the time. A division bench of Justices Makarand S Karnik and Nitin R Borkar was hearing a writ plea by Jagdishan seeking quashing of the FIR and setting aside of the May 29 magistrate court's order. Pending hearing of the plea, Jagdishan has sought a stay on the probe against him and urged that there should not be any coercive action, including the filing of chargesheet, against him. Earlier, four judges of the HC had recused themselves from hearing the matter citing various reasons including possession of HDFC Bank shares and prior association with Lilavati Trust or lawyer appearing in the matter among others. Thereafter, the plea was listed before the bench led by Justice Karnik on Monday. Senior advocate Amit Desai for Jagdishan argued that the FIR was a 'retaliatory' move due to recovery proceedings initiated against Splendour Gems Limited (formerly known as Beautiful Diamonds Limited), a company owned by the complainant's father. He added that the same was done using 'facade' of the Trust to seek action against the petitioner and done with 'malafide'. After Desai argued the matter, on the issue of admission and interim relief, the HC sought to know from the government lawyer as to what was the status of the probe. The lawyer argued that the investigation was underway after it being transferred to EOW and same was at a preliminary stage. The lawyer further informed the HC that till now no summons had been issued to Jagdishan and will require some time to apprise court of further course of action. After the HC decided to post the matter for further hearing on July 23, the state lawyer orally assured that no summons will be issued to the petitioner till then.

Maratha outfits vow to get back for attack on Sambhaji Brigade founder

MUMBAI: The attack on Sambhaji Brigade's founding member Pravin Gaikwad on Sunday by BJP office-bearer Deepak Kate and other people affiliated to the Shivdharma Foundation in Akkalkot, Solapur, has evoked strong reactions from Maratha outfits. Gaikwad was assaulted for making allegedly derogatory remarks about Swami Samarth Maharaj and also for not changing the name of his outfit to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Brigade. Pune,India - June 21.2017:Picture By Pravin Gaikwad in Book Launch in Balgandharva Auditorium in Pune, India, on Wednesday, June 21.2017. (Pic By Rahul Raut ) While opposition parties, which demanded strong action against the attackers, raised the issue in the state legislature on Monday, the Maratha outfits held a joint meeting in Pune. Shrikant Shirole, a Maratha leader, said that a committee would be formed to decide the further course of action. Virendra Pawar, coordinator of the Sakal Maratha Samaj, said this was an attack on all Maratha organisations and Marathas, 'carried out with the intention of diverting attention from key issues'. Maratha Seva Sangh president Purushottam Khedekar, on his part, lambasted the RSS. 'The RSS tries to corrupt society's brains, and the attack on Gaikwad was part of the design,' he said. 'We will have to retaliate unitedly.' Gaikwad was pulled out of his car and manhandled by Deepak Kate when he reached Akkalkot to attend a function. Kate is the general secretary of the Bharatiya Yuva Janata Morcha. Gaikwad said that people with progressive thoughts were living under threat since 2014. 'Activists with a secular ideology are insecure today, but we follow the ideology aligned with the Constitution,' he said. 'This was a planned attack, and the state government is responsible for it. The prime accused in my case is facing 10 serious cases, and even yesterday's attack was similar to an attempt to murder. Despite this, he is being shielded by the state government. The police are being directed to go soft on him.' Former Maharashtra BJP chief and revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule claimed that the BJP would not 'stoop to this level'. 'Deepak Kate is our office-bearer but what he did is not justifiable, and action should be taken against him,' he said after a video of Kate with him went viral on social media on Monday. Responding to the Opposition after the issue was raised in the state assembly, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the police had arrested the accused though Gaikwad was not willing to make a formal complaint. 'Strict action will be taken against the accused under the applicable laws,' he said. The attack on Gaikwad, a prominent Maratha leader, is also seen as an attempt to consolidate non-Marathas before the upcoming local body polls. 'Sambhaji Brigade shot to fame in 2004 after it vandalised the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune, where American scholar James Laine researched his book on Shivaji,' said an opposition leader. 'The vandals claimed the book had objectionable references to Shivaji Maharaj. A certain community harboured anger against Sambhaji Brigade after that attack. Sunday's attack, planned to pit the two communities against each other, could be part of the political consolidation plan.'

Ghislaine Maxwell to spill beans on Epstein list? Netizens fear for ‘her life'

Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's lover and accomplice, is willing to speak to Congress about the truth of the Epstein Files, the Daily Mail reported, citing sources. Ghislaine Maxwell, who used to work for Epstein, was convicted in 2022. (US District Court for the Southern District of New York via AFP) Maxwell, 63, is now the only person in the case who is doing time. She got 20 years for child trafficking. A source has now told the publication, 'Despite the rumours, Ghislaine was never offered any kind of plea deal. She would be more than happy to sit before Congress and tell her story,' adding, 'No one from the government has ever asked her to share what she knows. She remains the only person to be jailed in connection with Epstein, and she would welcome the chance to tell the American public the truth.' A source also said, 'Congressional hearings have been held into everything from JFK's assassination to 9/11. The Epstein Files rank up there with those cases. Ghislaine would be willing to speak before Congress and tell her story.' Netizens fear for Maxwell The internet has expressed fears for Maxwell's life due to her reported desire to come forward. 'Ghislaine Maxwell found dead', wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter) – joining a growing flow of people making a supposedly prescient prediction that Epstein's accomplice will 'kill herself'. This stems from the conspiracy theories swirling around Epstein's own suicide, with recent reports casting doubt on the veracity of the footage released by the US government. Another user mused along the same lines, whether Maxwell would be alive by the end of the week. 'I'm getting out in front of this …. Ghislaine Maxwell did not commit suicide later this month,' yet another chipped in. Many other such posts stating Maxwell didn't kill herself have begun to do the rounds on social media. 'Ghislaine Maxwell is willing to reveal the full Epstein List in front of how long before she tragically gets suicided in her sleep by a bullet to the back of her head?,' one user asked. Another commented, 'According to sources speaking to the Daily Mail, Ghislaine Maxwell is willing to reveal everything she knows about Jeffrey Epstein to Congress. Note: Ghislaine Maxwell did NOT commit suicide.' Yet another exclaimed, 'I GUARANTEE SHE'LL DIE BEFORE WE HEAR ANYTHING FROM HER'. Maxwell's reported preparedness to appear before Congress comes at a time when there is a lot of outrage over the Department of Justice saying there is no Epstein 'client list'. The videos from inside New York's Metropolitan Correctional Centre, which the DoJ says prove that Epstein killed himself in jail in 2019, while he was held on sex trafficking charges, have also raised more questions. Critics have pointed out that the video does not show the door or the inside of Epstein's jail, adding that a crucial minute is missing from the footage. Wired reported that their analysis of the metadata of the video shows it was edited, and now reports have surfaced that FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino may quit over claims of the tape being doctored. Trump's otherwise loyal MAGA base has also seen an internal rift over the issue, with many going after Attorney General Pam Bondi – even seeking her ouster – a move that prompted the president to take to Truth Social and ask his 'boys and gals' to lay off her. However, the damage seems to have been done with one Trump supporter telling NBC News, 'It's not even about Pam Bondi to me. It's like, look, Trump, we elected you because you were supposed to be different'. Maxwell, who continues to protest her innocence, is fighting to have the Supreme Court hear her case, with US government lawyers slated to submit their response on July 14 to her plea for her matter to be taken up by the nation's top court. While Trump's former ally, Elon Musk, had claimed in a now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) post that Trump's name was in the Epstein files, prompting the apparent cover-up, the source has denied the same while speaking to the Daily Mail. 'President Trump was photographed with Epstein several times, and they ran in the same circles, but Trump was one of the first to break all contact with Epstein because they fell out over a business deal and Epstein's treatment of women. There are no big shocks about President Trump in the Epstein Files. But there are a lot of powerful men involved and a lot of money, and it will come down to following the money,' they said. The Department of Justice has said it won't be prosecuting anyone else pertaining to the Epstein case. Epstein's victims have alleged that they were passed around as sex toys to his wealthy friends and business associates, who used to visit his homes, including the private island Epstein owned – Little Saint James.
