'US military out' graffiti spray-painted on Foreign Affairs HQ during overnight protest

GARDAÍ HAVE LAUNCHED a criminal damage investigation following the appearance of anti-US military graffiti on Iveagh House in Dublin, the Department of Foreign Affairs' headquarters.
At around 4am this morning, red graffiti saying 'US Military out of Shannon', 'Search the Planes' and a signature by protest group Palestine Action Éire were sprayed around the front door of the building.
A number of red stains were painted on the surrounding walls.
In a post on social media, Palestine Action Éire claimed that two individuals were behind the graffiti on the Department of Foreign Affairs office last night.
The group criticised the department for refusing to cut 'ties with the US-Israeli military supply chain.'

It is not the first time the building has been targeted by protesters. Last August, red paint was thrown on Iveagh House during a pro-Palestine demonstration. Similarly, the building was targeted by protestors in November 2023.

In a statement this morning, the Department of Foreign Affairs said they were aware of the 'security incident' at Iveagh House early this morning, and said that gardaí are 'actively following up on the matter'.
A garda spokesperson confirmed that gardaí were dispatched to the scene shortly after the building was spray-painted.
'The alarm was raised shortly after 4am following paint damage to the building's front façade,' the spokesperson said.
'The scene has undergone forensic examination and inquiries are ongoing.'

The incident follows a claim by Palestine Action Éire that three of its members were detained after breaking into Shannon Airport earlier this month.
On 1 May, the group said the activists got onto the runway and attempted to inspect a US military plane, forcing the airport to shut down operations for an hour.
During the incident, a white van rammed through the perimeter fence, and several people wearing orange jumpsuits, hard hats, and face coverings entered the restricted airside area.

People Before Profit slam SocDems for readmitting Eoin Hayes following Palantir controversy

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT have strongly criticised the Social Democrats for readmitting suspended TD Eoin Hayes to its parliamentary party. A spokesperson for the Social Democrats announced yesterday evening that Hayes, who has been on suspension for eight months, has been brought back into the fold by acting leader of the party Cian O'Callaghan. Hayes lost the whip on 10 December, 2024, when he provided incorrect information to the media about the sale of shares in Palantir Technologies, his former employer. Palantir provides militaries, including the Israeli Defence Forces, with artificial intelligence models used in battlegrounds to help identify targets. Its software has been used by Israel to identify targets in Gaza. Advertisement In February of this year, a review carried out by the national executive of the Social Democrats endorsed the decision to suspend Hayes 'indefinitely' from the parliamentary party. However, in yesterday's statement, O'Callaghan remarked that Hayes has been suspended from the parliamentary party for close to eight months and that he 'should be given a second chance'. Meanwhile, Hayes offered a 'full and unequivocal apology for giving the incorrect information to the media about when I divested from Palantir'. Hayes said he has donated $51,000 to three humanitarian organisations active in Gaza – split between, UNRWA, Unicef and Doctors without Borders. This evening, People Before Profit condemned the Social Democrats for what it said was a decision 'cynically announced late.. to minimise scrutiny' to readmit the Dublin Bay South TD. The party said that Hayes was 'rightly suspended' over his profits and incorrect information regarding his divestment from Palantir. 'When confronted at a press conference in December, Hayes refused to answer 23 direct questions from journalists on when and how he sold his shares,' the statement continued. It said that the Social Democrats have offered 'no transparency' on the matter and that by readmitting Hayes, it sends a message that 'ethical standards, public trust and Palestinian solidarity are less of a priority than seats in the Dáil and points in opinion polls.' People Before Profit's Councillor Conor Reddy said that it was his view that many people who voted for the Social Democrats will be 'deeply uncomfortable' at Hayes's return to the party, having voted 'because they thought [the Social Democrats] were different'. 'Palestine solidarity is not a fashion accessory for election season. It is a test of political integrity and the Social Democrats have failed that test in this case,' the statement concluded. 'People Before Profit called for Eoin Hayes to resign in December. We reiterate that call today.' Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone... Harris backs idea to hold national day of solidarity in support of Palestinians

Tánaiste Simon Harris has supported an idea for Ireland to hold a national day of solidarity in support of the people of Gaza. The Fine Gael leader said a proposal for a national day of solidarity was a 'sensible and a good idea', adding he will talk to colleagues on how to make it happen. He was responding to a letter written by Michael Cush, which appeared in the letters page of The Irish Times on Thursday. The suggestion for a national day or moment of solidarity made by Michael Cush in the letter is sensible and a good idea The letter said that the Irish Government has been 'brave and consistent' in its condemnation of atrocities and Israel's actions against Gaza, but that the people of Ireland are 'frustrated'. He said that people feel helpless to prevent it. 'If the Government were to call a national day of protest, making clear that it was a condemnation of atrocities in Gaza, not of Israel's right to self-determination or self-defence, the turnout would likely be enormous,' the letter added. 'Other nations might follow suit. Some good might be achieved. At the very least, Ireland and the Irish people would have done the right thing and could not be accused of standing idly by.' Posting a picture of the letter, Mr Harris said on his Instagram account that the people of Ireland stand with the people of Palestine. 'We stand for human rights, for international law, for a two state solution, for aid to flow, for hostages to be released. We stand for peace. We stand for an end to genocide,' he added. 'The suggestion for a national day or moment of solidarity made by Michael Cush in the letter is sensible and a good idea. 'It could be powerful if many countries did it together. I will now talk to colleagues on how to make this happen.' The United Nations and experts have said that Palestinians in Gaza are at risk of famine, with the World Food Programme (WFP) saying that almost a third of people in Gaza are not eating for days. The WFP said the crisis has reached new and 'astonishing levels of desperation'. Read More The latest child to starve to death in Gaza weighed less than when she was born

Social Democrats criticised for 'quietly' readmitting suspended TD Eoin Hayes

People Before Profit has criticised the Social Democrats for 'quietly' readmitting suspended TD Eoin Hayes, reiterating calls for the politician to resign his seat in the Dáil. Mr Hayes was allowed to rejoin the Social Democrats parliamentary party yesterday after nearly eight months sitting as an independent TD. He had been suspended weeks after his election last November, when it emerged that he had provided incorrect information to the media about the sale of shares in his former employer, Palantir Technologies. The company has a number of IT contracts with Israel and the US military. Today, People Before Profit accused the Social Democrats of 'cynically' announcing his readmission late on a Friday evening during the Dáil recess in order to minimise scrutiny. 'Eoin Hayes was rightly suspended in December after it was revealed he had profited to the tune of nearly €200,000 from shares in Palantir, a company deeply embedded in the Israeli war machine for close to its entire existence as a company,' it said in a statement. The party claimed that the Social Democrats had offered 'no transparency' on the matter since the suspension of Mr Hayes, accusing it of prioritising Dáil seats and opinion polls above ethical standards and public trust. 'This is not just a political scandal, it is a direct contradiction of the values the Social Democrats claim to stand for,' the People Before Profit statement read. 'Since their foundation 10 years ago, they have positioned themselves as the party of integrity and higher standards in public life, claiming to be an alternative to the corruption and cynicism of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. 'For many voters and members, that commitment to honesty and transparency has been central to their appeal. The handling of the Hayes affair will come as a real disappointment to many of those supporters, and rightly so.' People Before Profit welcomed the announcement that Mr Hayes would donate a sum of money to Palestinian charities, but added that there were still questions to answer about his actions. 'This whole situation raises serious questions, not just about Eoin Hayes' judgment, but about the standards the Social Democrats are willing to accept,' said Cllr Conor Reddy of People Before Profit. The statement noted that the party had called on Mr Hayes to resign last December, and reiterated that call following his readmission to the Social Democrats.
