Upgraded Mount Kinabalu postal service boosts tourist experience

The Sun30-04-2025
RANAU: The enhancement of postal services on Mount Kinabalu is expected to improve the quality of the tourist experience, particularly by keeping pace with technological advancements, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
She said the availability of postal services on Mount Kinabalu is more than just a facility - it serves as an iconic symbol of one-way communication from the country's highest peak, providing visitors with a meaningful memento.
'I climbed Mount Kinabalu to observe the upgrades as part of efforts to promote the enhanced postal services available on the mountain, including uniquely designed limited-edition postcards and the introduction of a new cancellation stamp specifically for postcards sent from Mount Kinabalu,' she told reporters at Kinabalu Park near here today.
Mount Kinabalu or Aki Nabalu (ancestor's mountain) in the Kadazandusun language stands at 4,095.2 metres and is located in the Ranau district, about 90 kilometres east of Kota Kinabalu.
Pos Malaysia launched its first post box on Mount Kinabalu in 2015, earning a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the highest-altitude post box in the country, located 3,289 metres above sea level.
Meanwhile, in a statement on the programme, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said that as part of ongoing efforts to improve telecommunications services in high-altitude areas, a service quality testing session was carried out using the MCMC Nexus application.
According to the statement, the application developed by MCMC allows for monitoring, comprehensive evaluation, and analysis focused on customer experience, including at key touchpoints such as Mount Kinabalu.
'The MADANI government, through the Communications Ministry and MCMC, will continue strengthening communications infrastructure in strategic tourism areas such as Mount Kinabalu for the comfort of visitors.
'Ongoing cooperation between government agencies, telecommunications service providers, and relevant stakeholders is crucial in realising the agenda of enhancing postal services,' it said.
The statement also noted that the fields of communications and postal services not only improve accessibility for the public and tourists but also help elevate Malaysia's reputation in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026.

Matfa to showcase country's theme parks ahead of VM2026

KUALA LUMPUR: As the countdown to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) begins, the Malaysian Association of Theme Parks and Family Attractions (Matfa) is unveiling ambitious plans to showcase the country's dynamic theme parks and family-friendly attractions as key tourism draws. 'Malaysia is home to a wide array of world-class theme parks, edutainment centres, and family attractions that offer memorable experiences for all age groups,' said Matfa president Tan Sri Richard Koh. 'With VM2026 just around the corner, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase the best of what we have to offer – from thrilling rides and water parks to rich cultural experiences and interactive learning zones," he added. To attract longer stays and increase visitor's satisfaction, Matfa is preparing a variety of value-added packages, themed events, seasonal offers, and cross-promotions leading up to 2026. The aim of these efforts, said Koh, was to entice visitors to explore more, stay longer, and spend more during their time here in Malaysia. 'Our members are ready to work hand-in-hand with the government and private sector to ensure VM2026 is not just a tourism campaign but a defining moment for Malaysia's tourism landscape. 'Together, we can make Malaysia the preferred family holiday destination in South-East Asia,' he added. Recognising the powerful appeal of theme parks and edutainment centres to both local and international visitors, Matfa is calling on the government and tourism stakeholders to extend stronger support to the industry as a key pillar in Malaysia's national tourism strategy. To strengthen its role in the nation's tourism agenda, Matfa is seeking strategic collaboration with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Tourism Malaysia, and relevant state governments. Among the key proposals are to include the association in the VM2026 promotional campaign and global marketing campaigns. Matfa is also seeking the government's help in getting a tax incentive for their members to improve guest experience, boost affordability, and encourage reinvestment in attractions. Matfa is currently lending its support to the ongoing Malaysia Mega Sale 2025 campaign, aligning with the national efforts to boost domestic and inbound tourism. The association believes that with the right backing, the theme park and family attractions sector could become a significant driver of tourist spending, job creation, and long-term tourism growth — especially vital in the post-pandemic recovery landscape. With increasing competition from regional countries, Matfa believes that a focused, united push on family-oriented attractions can set Malaysia apart from the others — offering not just a vacation, but a collection of unforgettable memories for visitors of all ages.

MM2H Gains Popularity Among Thais For Education, Lifestyle Appeal

WORLD Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign in Bangkok here on Tuesday. By Kenny Teng Khoon Hock BANGKOK, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme continues to gain traction among Thais, driven by cultural familiarity, proximity, and a competitive cost of living, said Tourism Malaysia's Bangkok office. Director of Tourism Malaysia in Bangkok, Nurul Ain Mohammed Yunus, noted that an increasing number of individuals and families from the region are looking beyond short-term travel, opting instead for longer-term stays in countries that offer quality of life, stability, and opportunity. "Thailand has emerged as a promising market for the MM2H segment. 'A key appeal for Thai MM2H applicants is our education sector. Malaysia is fast becoming an education hub in Asia, with globally ranked universities, international schools, and a multilingual learning environment," she told Bernama after a business matching session held in Bangkok on Monday. Nurul Ain added that thousands of international students, including those from Thailand, are choosing Malaysia for its proximity, affordability, and academic quality. She said that Malaysia offers all these and more - a safe, affordable, and multicultural living environment with access to world-class healthcare, modern infrastructure, and a strong sense of community. On Monday, Malaysia's Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing made a working visit to Bangkok to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). Tiong paid a courtesy call to his Thai counterpart, the Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong, before meeting with tourism industry players in Thailand.

Malaysia targets Thai visitors with sustainable travel campaign ahead of VM2026

BANGKOK: Malaysia launched a major campaign to attract more Thai travellers ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), promoting the country as a top destination for sustainable and inclusive travel experiences. Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said VM2026 highlights Malaysia's wide-ranging tourism assets, including eco-parks in Sabah and Sarawak, Unesco heritage sites, vibrant multicultural urban experiences, and tranquil coastal retreats. "We are focusing on seamless accessibility, improved infrastructure, and sustainability-driven experiences that meet the changing preferences of modern travellers," he said in his speech during the VM2026 launch event in Bangkok on Tuesday. Tiong, who is currently leading a tourism promotional campaign in Bangkok, remarked that Thailand and Malaysia share a strong friendship rooted in shared cultural values, people-to-people connections, and robust cross-border trade. He underscored that as Southeast Asia recovers in the post-pandemic era, tourism is regaining its status as a critical pillar for regional economic revitalisation. "Within Asean, we must see each other as collaborators rather than competitors. By working together, we can strengthen travel corridors, offer more appealing tourism packages, and create richer, more meaningful experiences for both regional and international visitors," he said. For the record, Malaysia received 13.4 million international visitors from January to April this year, marking a 21 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Of these, 833,610 visitors were from Thailand, representing a 3.4 per cent year-on-year growth and solidifying Thailand's status as a key market. - BERNAMA
