MCMC and Penang govt push Nexus app for better Internet access
GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is partnering with the Penang government to encourage wider public use of the MCMC Nexus application. The initiative aims to enhance internet accessibility by leveraging real-time data from users. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil explained that the app enables MCMC to take proactive steps in addressing connectivity issues without waiting for user complaints. 'This allows us to instruct telcos more efficiently to resolve problems,' he said during a visit to the Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) 4G tower in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas. The event was part of the 'Where There Are Roads, There Is Internet' programme. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz. The MCMC Nexus app features real-time internet quality monitoring and speed tests. Data collected is shared directly with MCMC and service providers for immediate network upgrades. Fahmi, on a two-day working visit to Penang, noted that the Tanjung Asam tower is one of five six-directional 4G MOCN towers built to improve connectivity in underserved areas. Other locations include Ikon Tengkolok and Bukit Putus Scout Camp in Negeri Sembilan, Prima Gambang in Pahang, and Kota Seri Langat Toll Plaza in Selangor. 'This collaboration between MCMC and telcos uses a network-sharing framework, allowing multiple providers to operate from a single tower,' he said. 'These towers support up to six telcos, making them ideal for remote routes with low population density.' The project received support from state governments and local authorities in securing permits and overcoming engineering challenges due to difficult terrain

Fahmi checks Malaysia Day 2025 venue in Butterworth for smooth event
BUTTERWORTH: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today visited the PICCA@Arena Butterworth Convention Centre, the chosen venue for Malaysia Day 2025, to assess early preparations for the national event. The celebration, set for Sept 16, will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also attending will be Penang's Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Fahmi's inspection focused on ensuring seamless event coordination. He later convened a meeting with Penang's Communications Ministry staff and agency representatives at the venue. Joining him were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Penang state secretary Datuk Zulkifli Long, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and officials from related departments. Before concluding his visit, Fahmi tested telecommunications coverage quality using the MCMC Nexus app during a bus ride to the National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) in Kubang Semang, Bukit Mertajam.

She said the availability of postal services on Mount Kinabalu is more than just a facility – it serves as an iconic symbol of one-way communication from the country's highest peak, providing visitors with a meaningful memento. "I climbed Mount Kinabalu to observe the upgrades as part of efforts to promote the enhanced postal services available on the mountain, including uniquely designed limited-edition postcards and the introduction of a new cancellation stamp specifically for postcards sent from Mount Kinabalu,' she told reporters at Kinabalu Park in Ranau recently. Mount Kinabalu or Aki Nabalu in Kadazandusun stands at 4,095.2m and is located in the Ranau district, about 90km from Kota Kinabalu. Pos Malaysia launched its first post box on Mount Kinabalu in 2015, earning a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the highest-altitude post box in the country, located 3,289m above sea level. Meanwhile, in a statement on the programme, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said that as part of ongoing efforts to improve telecommunications services in high-altitude areas, a service quality testing session was carried out using the MCMC Nexus application. According to the statement, the application developed by MCMC allows for monitoring, comprehensive evaluation, and analysis focused on customer experience, including at key touchpoints such as Mount Kinabalu. "The MADANI government, through the Communications Ministry and MCMC, will continue strengthening communications infrastructure in strategic tourism areas such as Mount Kinabalu for the comfort of visitors. "Ongoing cooperation between government agencies, telecommunications service providers, and relevant stakeholders is crucial in realising the agenda of enhancing postal services,' it said. The statement also noted that the fields of communications and postal services not only improve accessibility for the public and tourists but also help elevate Malaysia's reputation in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026. – Bernama
