Unions a constant presence despite no union election
Kolkata: The campus where the law student was raped was not the only college where unions play a larger-than-life role despite the absence of a formal union. Across Kolkata, there are several colleges where no union exists on paper since union elections have not been held since 2017.

But the stranglehold of unions remain in these institutions as youths owing allegiance to politicians control different aspects of students' lives.
At the law college under the scanner now, Monojit Mishra who had passed out in 2022, held sway over the students affairs though he had passed out in 2022. Though no union election had been held in the college for over eight years, it still had a union with various functionaries.
The rape survivor had in her account to the police stated that she was offered the union general secretary's post by Monojit on Wednesday. As it turned out, he had in turn demanded sexual gratification.
When she had turned down his advances, he resorted to rape.
"In the absence of an elected union, several colleges are in the vice of the likes of Monojit who use their dadagiri to control the lives of students. Since there is on election, these men cannot be dethroned.
The education should either do away with the unions completely and replace them with student councils or they should hold union elections," said a student of the law college.
Around eight years ago, the state government had framed rules under the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Act, 2017, which stated that there would be students' councils instead of students' unions, but this hasn't been implemented since student elections were suspended in 2017.

"The students' union was established to look after students' interests on college campuses. The fund, which was formed by collecting money from each student of colleges, could be utilised by the college union for conducting programmes like freshers' welcome, farewell programme, Saraswati Puja, and other celebrations. Gradually, the focus shifted from serving students' interests to personal interests. Local political leaders also got involved in it," said an academic.
College principals highlighted that they have no authority to question the utilisation of student funds. One principal said, "The union was defunct for many years. Now, who will utilise this fund and who should be given authority? Principals are in the most vulnerable position dealing with all these troubles while ensuring safety and security."
Purna Chandra Maity, a former principal, said, "In every college, a section of students enjoy enormous power due to their political backing.
They collect huge amounts of money during admissions even after the online admission system has been implemented. Who will stop them? Students' money should be utilised by union leaders through a teacher appointed by the college, but this was never followed. Now, in the absence of an elected body, who will manage this money? Most college principals are facing trouble due to these sections, as everybody knows.
"
In the recent past, several complaints were raised against pass-out students trying to acquire power to access this fund.
Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College's student Deshma Ghosh moved to court regarding unwanted interference from Sabbir Ali, who was a former student of Day College. Ghosh said, "Sabbir Ali, who passed out from Day College, and his associates tried to maintain control over the campus. We faced problems as both colleges share the same campus.
"
A north Kolkata college student said, "Union rooms inside the colleges are dominated by political dadas who may have passed college years ago.
Their presence and the power they enjoy inside the campus because of political connections often intimidate other students. I personally never visited the union room because I hardly see any student there. Various antisocial activities happen inside."
A source said, "The rape incident at the law college has come to light and the accused have been arrested. But unfortunately, most colleges of the city are controlled by such 'dadas' who are close to power.
There are many colleges where girls have been harassed or molested and boys have been physically assaulted on the campus, but unfortunately, complaints were not lodged out of fear."
A student of the law college said, "Monojit controlled the college. He decided what cultural activities will take place, if an exam should be postponed or not, and would sort out attendance issues with authority."
An insider said, "From North to South, most colleges in the city are controlled by dadas, who passed out several years ago or belong to the neighbourhood. This is because of their political connections and to retain power and control over the college. The union rooms are their free ground and they have free access to every corner of the college and are also part of the decision-making process. The unlimited power that they enjoy often leads them to threaten people, extort money, and intimidate teachers and students.

Kolkata gangrape case: ‘Red kurta, brown pants' – Police recovers CRUCIAL evidence seen in CCTV footage
Kolkata Gangrape Case: The investigation into the horrific alleged rape of a 21-year-old student inside South Calcutta Law College has taken a critical turn, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police recovered key forensic evidence, including clothes worn by the main accused—referred to as 'M'—that matched those seen in CCTV footage, according to Anandabaazar Patrika. The Bengali daily refused to identify 'M' in thior reports. The SIT also visited the homes of all three accused — Monojit Mishra, Jayeb, and Pramit — and collected multiple samples. Kolkata Police officials revealed that a red kurta, brown trousers with six pockets, and black shorts were recovered from Kolkata gangrape prime accused 'M's residence. These were the exact clothes the Kolkata gangrape case prime accused Monojit Mishra was seen wearing during the time of the incident, according to the Bengali media report citing the CCTV footage. The items have been sent for forensic analysis and are expected to play a vital role in corroborating the victim's account. The SIT, initially comprising five officers and now expanded to nine, is led by Assistant Commissioner (South Suburbs) Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal. A female officer has also joined the probe. The team visited the homes of all three accused on Sunday, collecting clothing, electronic devices, and other physical evidence. Investigators are probing whether the accused used any other gadgets beyond their mobile phones. According to ABP report, the south Kolkata law college gangrape survivor was taken back to the crime scene to help reconstruct the sequence of events. The 21-year-old law student told officers that the sexual assault began inside the student union room of the south Kolkata law college, but escalated when she was dragged into the guard's room, where the rape occurred. The gangrape survivor claimed to have suffered a head injury during the assault and alleged that one of the accused attempted to strike her with a hockey stick. The stick has since been recovered, and strands of torn hair were also found at the scene, now sent for DNA testing. CCTV footage from 7:30 PM to 10:50 PM on 25 June has been collected. Investigators say the footage supports the survivor's claims and places the accused at the scene. The security guard, who allegedly failed to intervene, has also been arrested. The gangrape survivor's family has stated they do not want a CBI probe at this stage and have expressed faith in the Kolkata Police investigation. According to several local media reports, the arrested guard Pinaki Bandopadhyay has revealed to investigators that another female student was present at the union room throughout the day before the survivor was assaulted. Around 8:30 pm, that female student left the college. On the day of the incident, Pinaki was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift, whose statement is also likely to be recorded as part of the investigation. According to a News18 report, the police have prepared a list of 17 individuals who were present at the college after 4pm on the day of the incident. Two of them have been questioned by the SIT.

BJP slams RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for his remarks on Waqf (Amendment) Act
Jun 30, 2025 01:12 PM IST The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday slammed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav for his remarks on the Waqf (Amendment) Act and for accusing the ruling dispensation of disrespecting the constitution framed by BR Ambedkar. BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi said the socialism of the RJD and SP cannot be called socialism at all. (PTI) 'These parties, RJD, Samajwadi Party (SP), etc, use the garb of socialism, but do not stand up for the rights of the poor and oppressed Muslims. Therefore, the socialism of RJD and SP cannot be called socialism at all. If it is called 'Namazvad', then it will not be an exaggeration,' said BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi. He slammed Yadav, the leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, for protesting against the Waqf Amendment Act. Trivedi said the law was passed by Parliament, and opposing the same is being done to appease a section of people. 'I want to tell the people of Bihar that there are two options. The INDI[A] alliance, which will try to implement sharia through the back door if it comes to power, and the other is our government, which will remain committed to protecting Baba Saheb's constitution,' Trivedi said. He accused the RJD of pursuing vote bank politics.

BJP slams Tejashwi's stand on Waqf Act, says his 'samajwaad' cover for 'namazwaad'
NEW DELHI: The BJP on Monday accused the opposition alliance of trying to turn the Constitution into a "sharia script" and using the garb of "samajwaad" (socialism) to hide its "namazwaad", as it slammed RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for asserting that his bloc, if elected to power in Bihar, will 'throw the amended Waqf Act in dustbin'. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the INDIA bloc of the RJD-Congress-Left in Bihar has shown its absence of respect for the Constitution, as the Act was passed by Parliament and is being adjudicated in the Supreme Court. He told reporters that the opposition alliance is driven by vote bank politics, a euphemism for its outreach to Muslim voters over the opposition to the Act from a large number of them. Trivedi alleged that the INDIA bloc wants to enforce Sharia provisions through the back door. States like Telangana and Karnataka are giving reservations to Muslims at the cost of quotas for Hindu OBCs, SCs and STs, and West Bengal is also trying to do it, he said. He underlined the BJP-led NDA's commitment to the values of the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar. He said, "'Samvidhan bachao' is merely a facade of these parties as their true face is 'sharia lao'. If they are in power, they will add 'namazwaad' to the Constitution's preamble. They want to turn the Constitution into a Sharia script, but we will not allow it."
