Film Previews: May 2025

Epoch Times24-04-2025
Marking the official start of the summer season, May (along with June, November, and December) is usually one of the highest-earning months of every year at the box office.
Based on what's been officially confirmed, that likely won't happen this year as the eighth installment of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise is the only title where a healthy return is virtually guaranteed.
Here are some of the more interesting looking theatrical and steaming titles coming out next month. Please note: All opening dates are subject to change.
May 1
'Another Simple Favor'
To director Paul Feig and screenwriter Jessica Sharzer's immense credit, they ended the 2018 'A Simple Favor' in a manner where a sequel would not only make sense, it would also be warranted. Paroled murderer Emily (Blake Lively) asks Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) to be the maid of honor at her extravagant wedding on the Italian island of Capri. Stephanie, as it turns out, is the woman responsible for her conviction. (MGM/Amazon)
May 2
'Thunderbolts*
A promotional photo for "Thunderbolts*"
Disney/Marvel
This latest installment could either be its salvation or the final nail in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) coffin. Akin to DC Comics' 'Suicide Squad,' the Thunderbolts are a gaggle of misfit supervillains, now antihero crime-fighters. Because the cast includes several respected dramatic and comedic actors, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the movie could be halfway decent. (Disney/Marvel)
'The Surfer'

"The Surfer," coming out in May, features Nicolas Cage.
Roadside Attractions
In this pot-boiling dramatic thriller, Nicolas Cage stars as the unnamed title character who returns to his native Australia with his teen son to surf near his seaside boyhood home. This doesn't go over well with a half-dozen local thugs (led by Julian McMahon). Their method of intimidation steadily increases when the Cage character refuses to back down. (Roadside Attractions)
'Off the Record'
"Off the Record," similar to "A Star Is Born" stars Rainey Qualley as a lounge singer who makes it big.
Quiver Distribution
Based on the trailer, this romantic drama is a remake of 'A Star is Born' in all but name. Struggling lounge-singer Astor (Rainey Qualley, sister of Margaret) gets noticed by Brandyn (Ryan Hansen), a rock star in the back half of his career. He mentors her, she gets popular, he goes into full-blown auto-destruct mode, and … well, you know the rest. (Quiver Distribution)
May 9
'Nonnas'
Older female actors star with Vince Vaughn in "Nonnas."
Netflix
Reminiscent of 'Moonstruck,' 'Big Night,' and 'Mostly Martha,' this throwback light comedy stars Vince Vaughn. After the death of his mother, he opens an Italian restaurant in New York and hires his mom's friends as the cooks. Drea de Matteo and Linda Cardellini co-star along with Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Susan Sarandon, and Brenda Vaccaro as the frequently bickering chefs. (Netflix)
'Fight or Flight'
Josh Hartnett's character faces off with hardened criminals in "Fight or Flight."
Magnet Releasing
Thanks to an early February release in England, this action comedy from first-time feature director James Madigan currently has a 100 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Suggesting a hybrid of 'Con Air,' 'John Wick,' and 'Bullet Train,' it stars Josh Hartnett as a convicted felon. He's given an opportunity to expunge his record if he can equalize a deadly assassin during a covert plane trip. The catch: Every other passenger is a hardened criminal. (Magnet Releasing)
'Long Way Home'
This motorcycle buddy documentary features Ewen McGregor (L).
Apple TV+
In this new Apple TV+ docuseries, actor Ewan McGregor and his boyhood friend Charley Boorman chronicle their most recent road trip, something they've done for two decades. On this excursion, the men mount vintage motorcycles and visit 17 countries in Scandinavia and Europe over the space of nine weeks. (Apple TV+)
'Lilly'
Patricia Clarkson's character takes on discrimination in "Lilly."
Blue Harbor Entertainment
In this fact-based courtroom drama, the always terrific Patricia Clarkson stars as Lilly Ledbetter, an attorney who was the plaintiff in the 2007, hotly contested landmark 'Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company' Supreme Court case. The crux of Ledbetter's argument was rooted in 'equal pay for equal work,' which relied heavily on alleged gender and racial discrimination. (Blue Harbor Entertainment)
May 14
'American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden'
A scene from "American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden."
Netflix
If the quality and thoroughness of this upcoming three-part docuseries is as good as previous similar Netflix efforts about O.J. Simpson and the Boston Marathon bombing, it will be well worth your investment of time. Postponed from March. (Netflix)
May 23
'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning'
Another "M:I" in the franchise stars Tom Cruise.
Paramount
Unless something totally out of left field occurs, this will likely be the highest-grossing feature of 2025. Tom Cruise (for the eighth time) stars as Ethan Hunt, the leader of a covert IMF (Impossible Mission Force) team; the team is charged with stopping [fill in the blank villain name here] which threatens world peace and order as we know it. Word to the wise: Just because 'final' appears in the title, doesn't mean this will actually be the last 'M:I' film. (Paramount)
'Friendship'
Tim Robinson (L) and Paul Rudd in "Friendship".
A24
This slightly-twisted comedy, the feature debut of writer-director of Andrew DeYoung, stars Paul Rudd and SNL alum Tim Robinson as new neighbors that initially bond. In short order, they discover they have nothing in common. One of them handles this as a matter of course, but the other feels slighted and offended. Given that this is distributed by rebel studio A24, expect friction and sparks. (A24)
May 30
'The Phoenician Scheme'
"The Phoenician Scheme" is a quirky espionage thriller.
Focus Features
Director Wes Anderson, his co-writer Roman Coppola, and some of their frequent collaborators (Bill Murray, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlet Johansson, and Bryan Cranston) join forces for something Anderson has never done before. Instead of their usual off-beat, whimsical humor, the filmmakers tackle the often-tricky espionage thriller genre. (Focus Features)
What to Watch for
I'm particularly looking forward to 'Another Simple Favor,' 'The Surfer,' 'Nonnas,' 'Fight or Flight,' 'Long Way Home,' and 'Friendship.'

MCU Star Shuts Down Marvel Cinematic Universe Return Rumors

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a massive marvel and television franchise built upon the recurring appearances of fan-favorite stars and characters. However, not all cast members have the opportunity to continue returning, and one such MCU star has shut down rumors that they'll be making a return to the franchise. While this may be disappointing for some fans that were hoping for a comeback, the star did insist that there could still be an opportunity in the future. As for the most recent slew of rumors, however, those had to be shut down. Of course, Marvel stars have a tendency to shut down rumors in an effort to keep their appearances a surprise, so fans will still speculate either way. Here's what the star had to share while speaking with Entertainment Tonight: 'It's not true!' says Kerry Condon, the Marvel star who played the voice of artificial intelligence F.R.I.D.A.Y. in several MCU projects. After replacing Tony Stark's artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. in the film Avengers: Age of Ultron , she continued to appear until Tony's death in Avengers: Endgame , leading fans to ponder when or if we'd ever see her again. While reports suggest a number of artificial intelligence characters are appearing in the Disney Plus series Vision Quest , Condon insists that she will not be among them, adding the following response based on when she first saw the rumors herself: 'I saw it, and I was like, 'Who's saying this?!' It's not true, no, no, no… I wouldn't say no chance, but at the moment it's not in the cards for me, no.' While fans would absolutely love to see her return, and she insists it could still be possible, it currently doesn't look that way. Of course, with the character E.D.I.T.H. apparently appearing in Vision Quest as portrayed by a new cast member, we could be seeing a recast for F.R.I.D.A.Y. as well. Ultimately, it depends on how the events of Vision Quest play out. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional MCU updates as we have them, including rumors, as well as whether or not we'll see the return of Kerry Condon's beloved Marvel character F.R.I.D.A.Y. in any new projects.

Value: 20/20 Functionality: 18/20 Quality/Ease of Use: 19/20 Aesthetics: 19/20 Comfort: 19/20 TOTAL: 95/100 Here's a little context: I hate wearing bras. But who doesn't, really? I'm convinced it's a universal fact for all of us bra wearers that there's no better feeling than freeing the gals after a long day of work, happy hour drinks and errands. The pop of the clasps, the release of tension and the flood of relief, bliss and freedom. I hate bras so much, that I'd rather wear sticky boobs or tape my nipples down than succumb to the confining squeeze. So, when I received the task of trying out the cult-favorite Natori Feathers bra, I was a bit hesitant, but let me tell you, it is *so* worth it. Best of all, it's currently over 30 percent off for the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, which runs through Sunday, August 3. In case you didn't know, shoppers gain access to the Anniversary Sale in tiers based on their Nordy Club status before it opens up to everyone on July 12. (P.S. Learn more about our process here. Started by Josie Natori on the floor of her living room in 1997, the lingerie brand quickly became known for making the most comfortable bras on the market for women with small breasts and big boobs, offering sizes 32A through 36G, 30A through 30DDD and 38 B through 38DD. To be quite honest, I gave up on the one-brand-accommodates-all notion years ago, accepting my fate with ill-fitting bras and living with the gap in my cups, tight band and loose straps. It wasn't until a recent event, where I was treated to a bra-fitting—something I hadn't experienced since high school—when I realized that I might be wearing the wrong size bra. The bra expert assured me that I'm a 34B—not a 32D or 34C like I had always worn. Then, I took a chance on the Natori Feathers bra. Natori The brand's original plunge T-shirt bra features a gorgeous Italian lace trim and mesh overlay that spices up the sex appeal on an otherwise basic bra that has remained one of the top sellers for over a decade. I opted for a size 34B, and I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I slipped it on. Not only had I ordered the correct size, but the bra was *actually* comfortable and supportive. How could that be? Between the soft feel of the fabric to the thin, lightweight padding that felt so malleable and non-suffocating on my skin, I almost forgot that I was even wearing a bra. The lace band felt supple and breathable against my chest and ribcage like a gentle hug that never dug in or caused my skin to spill over (the bra is made from a blend of up to 50 percent recycled materials). The demi contour and deep plunge created a flattering shape and natural lift that looked great with my V-neck blouses and dresses. I didn't love how the lace poked out of scoop neck tank tops, but I've continued to wear it with other necklines non-stop for weeks on end. Despite the lace design, the bra looks smooth underneath my shirts and I never see lumps or divots poking out against the fabric. I don't have the patience to give it a hand wash, as the brand suggests, but I'm happy to report that it has survived the delicates wash cycle like a champ (just make sure to zip it up in a washing bag for delicates for extra protection). Bottom line: When a bra can look great and make me feel like I'm going braless, it's a miracle worker. Ladies, don't give up hope like I almost did. $72; $45 at nordstrom 26 Strapless Bras That Won't Slip, Gape or Slouch, No Matter What, According to Our Editors & Reviewers PureWow's editors and writers have spent more than a decade shopping online, digging through sales and putting our home goods, beauty finds, wellness picks and more through the wringer—all to help you determine which are actually worth your hard-earned cash.
