The Scottish coastal pub with beer garden that was crowned 'best in Scotland'
Scotland features countless pubs across its many cities, towns, and villages. From cosy inns to trendy bars, there are watering holes to suit every taste.
Everyone will have their own preferences when it comes to choosing a place for a drink. However, one venue was recently named the best in the country.
As reported by the Daily Record, the Scottish Hospitality Awards 2025 were held last week in Glasgow. Among the winners was The Brig & Barrel in Belhaven, which was named 'Pub/Inn Of The Year'.
The freehouse pub is family and dog-friendly, and features a cosy interior with a fireplace. It serves up a wide selection of beer and wine, as well as a variety of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
The Brig & Barrel also offers food, including daily fish and vegan specials. Among the dishes customers can enjoy are beer battered fish and chips, smoked haddock, and a range of burgers.
The pub benefits from a beer garden to enjoy drinks outside over the summer. It features covered booths with heaters so that customers can have a pint even amidst Scotland's famously unpredictable weather.
The Brig & Barrel is only a short walk from Belhaven Bay, which is a scenic beach situated within the John Muir Country Park. The bay is ideal for walking, picnics, and sunbathing, and offers spectacular views out over the Forth Estuary.
Posting on Facebook in response to the Scottish Hospitality Awards 2025 win, The Brig & Barrel wrote: "Wow, my team did amazing and they all deserve this massively. Well done guys, we love ya to bits.
"I've had a few wee health issues this year and not been able to do my usual graft. But they have totally stepped upto the task and have done me proud.
"The award will sit very nicely on the fireplace with a few of the other ones! Reading all the comments, seeing the support from our locals and Dunbar visitors alike is what makes me smile. Unbelievable."
In addition to being named the Pub/Inn Of The Year, The Brig & Barrel has also received very positive feedback from customers. It currently has an average rating of 4.7 out of five on Google based on 511 reviews.
One happy visitor wrote: "Had dinner here one night and drinks a second night. Loved this wee pub. Sat in garden area both times. Even when raining as it's covered.
"Dog friendly. Great service. Great food. Thoroughly recommend. Hope to be back next time visiting the area."
A second echoed: "Sunshine outdoors but lovely cool interior with cozy wood pub style.
"Food was ace. Philly cheese steak was the best I have ever had. Service was ace. Will return."
Elsewhere, The Keys Bar in St Andrews was named 'Best Bar' at the Scottish Hospitality Awards.
The independent-run venue features more than 300 whiskies and 150 gins to choose from, and also benefits from outdoor seating.

Stunning 31-mile train journey named UK's best thanks to picturesque views
The two-hour train journey has been crowned one of the best in Britain. When you think of UK railways, you probably think of long delays, cancellations, and crowded carriages. The transport system in Britain doesn't have the best reputation, so many may be shocked to find out that there are several stunning train routes that showcase rolling countryside and golden sandy beaches. For example, the Machynlleth to Pwllheli route in Wales was recently named one of the best train journeys in the country by Conde Nast Traveller. The route covers 31 miles of track and takes around two hours and 12 minutes. On the journey, travellers will see breathtaking mountains, stunning beaches, and dense forests, and it costs less than £20 for a return journey. T he publication said: "Just inside the southernmost rim of Snowdonia National Park, this route is blessed by nature from the moment the train departs. "Passengers gaze onto scenes of tall grass smattered with waist-high wildflowers and puffy clouds over peaks fringed with forest... Not long after Dovey Junction station, the ride follows the bends of the River Dyfi until it opens wide onto the Cardigan Bay coast, shaped by fingers of creamy sand and dunes melting into the water." The train has 25 stops, including the 'most isolated station in Wales', Dovey Junction, and the acclaimed seaside town of Barmouth - just make sure you get a window seat to make the most of the journey. Most of the track hugs the country's stunning coastline, allowing for plenty of beach vistas and sea views. However, there are no first-class carriages, so it might be worth bringing your own train picnic, reports the Mirror. Machynlleth is located 217 miles from Central London, meaning you'll have to drive around four hours and 47 minutes to get there. You can catch an indirect train from London Euston, which includes a stop over at Birmingham but only takes three hours and 52 minutes. Single adult fares start from £37.20. After arriving in Machynlleth, you can hop straight onto the train to Pwllheli or spend the night in the market town. Here, you'll find an array of museums, the Michelin-starred restaurant Ynyshir, and - if you time it right - Machynlleth Comedy Festival. You can grab return fares to Pwllheli and back for as little as £21.09. If you have a railcard, this can cut down the price to an even more impressive £13.99 - which works out at less than £7 each way!

I've been to 30 countries and there are six cities in Europe I'd never revisit
Megan Arz, who lives in Germany, has visited 30 countries and has a few in Europe that she would not revisit - and some of her choices might surprise you Selecting the ideal holiday destination can prove tricky. With breathtaking coastal resorts across Greece and vibrant metropolitan breaks in Rome, options are plentiful. Yet one globe-trotter who has explored 30 nations might assist you in refining your selections. Megan Arz, dubbed the 'friendly neighbourhood tour guide', has resided on the continent for approximately six years but reveals there are certain sought-after European cities she wouldn't wish to revisit for different reasons. Nevertheless, prepare yourself, her assessments are rather scathing and even feature a UK destination. On TikTok (@meganarztravels), she began her catalogue with a 'semi-obvious' city which is 'so easy to punch down'. "That is Frankfurt, my neighbouring city here in Germany," she remarked. "Frankfurt does lack a lot of character, especially when you compare it to other cities in Germany and smaller towns. It's a banking centre and you can feel that. "It's the centre of the European Central Bank and it just doesn't have that kind of warm and cosy feeling about it." Beyond this, Megan highlighted the absence of quality local beer and the dominance of bankers - or 'financial bros'. She continued: "It just leads to the sense of like 'eh' - it's not that cool." Remarkably, a renowned Italian tourist destination featured next on her criticism list. Despite her visit occurring some time previously, she condemned the location for its 'cheap souvenirs' and proposed it was rather a 'day trip place' than a week-long holiday spot, reports the Daily Record Megan continued: "Can't wait for some super defensive Italians in my comments here, but Italy made the list this time around with Pisa. Now, admittedly, I only went to Pisa once and it was quite a while ago, but I don't remember there being anything to do in the town besides see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. "And that whole area around there is so mobbed with like cheap souvenirs and people trying to sell you things and pickpockets, and it just like didn't have a very nice feeling about it." Third on her list was a destination you might not recognise. Megan disclosed that Kiruna in northern Sweden, which sits practically in 'the middle of nowhere' ranked among her least favourite spots. She continued: "You go there to hunt for Northern Lights and you can visit the original ice hotel here. But honestly, other than that, it's a mining town that's going through a major transition. "[...] But it's an odd place and definitely one of the most forgettable places that I've visited, sorry Kiruna!" You might be shocked to discover that Prague claimed fourth place on her list. Mass tourism and excessive stag parties were Megan's primary complaints, and she felt she'd experienced everything the city offered in a single visit. "Prague in the Czech Republic [...] it's a city that has a lot of bachelor [and] bachelorette parties and it's suffering a bit from overtourism which leads to this feeling of just like: 'what's going on here?'," she said. "I've only visited once and while I would consider going back, I would only consider going back if I had a local perspective and someone who could show me other parts of it [...] I was there for five days before and I kind of felt like I saw what I needed to see." Brits might be shocked to learn that the final destination on her list was actually a UK city. Despite enjoying her stay, she described it more as a 'launching pad' for exploring elsewhere. She disclosed: "The last European city that I probably wouldn't visit again is Inverness in Scotland. I absolutely love Scotland and while I did have a good time in Inverness, it's quite a small city and doesn't have that much to offer from a tourist perspective. "It's a great jumping-off point for seeing the Highlands or visiting Speyside, but honestly after a couple of days there, I feel like I saw everything I needed to see and probably wouldn't come back for a return visit." Predictably, the assessment sparked a flurry of responses on TikTok, with countless viewers weighing in with their own opinions about each destination. One individual concurred, stating: "I super agree with you on Pisa! I was staying there for a day and I got soooo bored after seeing the leaning tower and main attractions and even that wasn't as impressive tbh." Another added: "Just got back from Inverness and I agree! It's a great place to base yourself to see the Highlands, but the city itself just isn't great." However, not everyone agreed with Megan's perspective. One viewer countered: "I've been to Prague dozens of times and would be glad to visit it again. Love that city!" Another added: "So sad to see Prague here, it's my favourite city I've seen in Europe so far."

'Underwhelming and overpriced' Scottish landmark is Europe's most overcrowded tourist attraction
Tourists have been left unimpressed by the crowds at this popular visitor spot. Everyone going on holiday knows they'll have to deal with overcrowding at some point. Whether it's the sun-soaked beaches of Mallorca or the Fontana di Trevi in Rome, popular places, inevitably, draw large numbers of tourists. But, in fact, it's an iconic Scottish landmark that has taken the dubious title of the busiest attraction in Europe. Edinburgh Castle has been ranked the busiest destination on the continent. The capital hotspot even placed ahead of Buckingham Palace, which came second on the list from The Thinking Traveller. As reported by the Express, Edinburgh's iconic fortress, which has stood atop Castle Rock since the 11th century, continues to draw huge numbers of visitors from around the world. It was visited by about 2million people in 2024, according to Visit Scotland. While the castle's popularity remains undisputed, not all visitors have been impressed by the experience. Several Tripadvisor reviewers raised concerns over overcrowding, high ticket prices, and the overall value for money. User Joe_Railwayman commented: 'An underwhelming visit. We found certain areas to be very overcrowded and the cafe very expensive. Maps were unclear but may have been a different experience if we had upgraded to include audio guide or tour.' Caz881975 echoed the sentiment, writing: 'Paying over £70 for three Adults and two Children (one Senior) we thought that it was overpriced. We explored most areas, however, in general, I thought it was a place with lots of good viewing points for Edinburgh.' Despite some negative reviews, many visitors have praised the castle for its rich history and panoramic views of the city. Several described the visit as a moving experience, particularly when visiting the Scottish National War Memorial housed within the castle walls. Emwhitnall shared: 'There is so much to explore within the castle walls, I'd recommend getting the audioguide to make the most of the experience. "It was also very moving exploring the war memorial, dedicated to all those who have served for Scotland. Make sure to time your visit if you want to watch the Mons Meg cannon firing as it only happens once a day.' Jason F also left a glowing review, writing: 'What an amazing castle! So much to see and do. We spent half the day here, enjoying the Cafe and many exhibits on display. The views from the castle, of Edinburgh, are amazing.' The fortress remains one of the top attractions in the UK and was recently named fifth in the country in Tripadvisor's annual Travellers' Choice Awards. Its elevated position in the heart of Edinburgh offers spectacular views across the capital, making it a must-see for tourists willing to tackle the steep walk up to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the highlights within the castle grounds are the Great Hall, St Margaret's Chapel, the One o'clock Gun, the Prisons of War, and The Queen's Embroideries. Visitors are also drawn to the site's connection to figures such as Mary Queen of Scots, whose story is woven into its royal past. In addition to its status as a top destination, Edinburgh Castle also features prominently on Tripadvisor's list of the best experiences in the UK. One of the most popular options is the Guided Walking Tour, where visitors are led through the grounds while learning about the lives of the castle's historic residents. After the guided portion, tourists are free to explore the castle's interior and surrounding grounds at their leisure.
