What is NASCAR's In-Season Challenge? 2 drivers will settle $1 million title at Brickyard 400

INDIANAPOLIS — As Kyle Larson aims to go back-to-back in the Brickyard 400, Denny Hamlin hopes to finally snag his first victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Team Penske trio hope to deliver Roger Penske a hometown win of sorts, NASCAR's new In-Season Challenge, a mano-a-mano driver battle with $1 million on the line for the victorious team is guaranteed to end in a tie…er, Ty.
Because a 32-driver field that for the last four NASCAR Cup series rounds has made for a bracket-style single-elimination in-season tournament of sorts will be decided through this weekend's Brickyard 400. No. 6 seed Ty Gibbs, a 22-year-old third-year Cup series driver of the No. 54 Toyota for his grandfather's Joe Gibbs Racing, will face off against the Cinderella story of the summer, No. 32 seed Ty Dillon, the 33-year-old driver of the No. 10 Chevy for Kaulig Racing who's bounced around and raced for 10 different Cup teams since he made his debut in 2014. In Round 1 of this summer's tournament, Dillon knocked off top-seeded Denny Hamlin in a crash-filled opening round at Atlanta Motor Speedway where half the crew presently top 10 in points, Hamlin included, crashed out and finished 30th or worse.
Here's what you need to know about NASCAR's In-Season Challenge:
With 36 full-season drivers in this year's Cup series field, NASCAR set a deadline of the June 1 race at Nashville Superspeedway at which the sanctioning body would include the top 32 drivers in points at the time in the In-Season Challenge field, leaving out Shane van Gisbergen, who would go on to win three of the next six races, all on road or street courses – as well as Cole Custer, Riley Herbst and Cody Ware.
The remaining drivers then had the next three Cup series rounds at Michigan, Mexico City and Pocono to decide their tournament seed via their best finish from those three races with ties broken by drivers' next best finish during the seeding period. Hamlin, Chase Briscoe, Chris Buescher and Christopher Bell landed seeds 1 through 4, respectively, with Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Todd Gilliland, Noah Gragson and Dillon in the final four spots. Other notables in the seeding process included former series champs Chase Elliott (No. 5), Ryan Blaney (No. 7), Larson (No. 10), Kyle Busch (No. 16), Brad Keselowski (No. 17) and Joey Logano (No. 25), as well as Hendrick Motorsports drivers Alex Bowman (No. 8) and William Byron (No. 18).

From that seeding, drivers were slotted into a five-round, single-elimination bracket, where drivers' finishing position in each race assigned to a given round would determine whether they beat their opponent or not.
By the end of Round 1, all drivers who had won a race at that point in the season — minus Atlanta race-winner Elliott — had been eliminated, setting the stage for the unpredictable rest of the tournament that would follow.
After Atlanta, the Chicago street course hosted the Round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals at Sonoma and the semifinals at Dover. Sunday's Brickyard 400 hosts the finale, which marks the final race of TNT's broadcast stint for this season, which has spanned the entire In-Season Challenge stretch.
The team of the winner of the In-Season Challenge will win a $1 million grand-prize.

Though Gibbs and Dillon have varying levels of Cup series experience, neither has won a Cup race in their careers. Gibbs has twice finished runner-up — coming at Darlington a year ago and earlier this month at Chicago. Dillion's career-best finish came in 2020 at Talladega where he took third place.

On the road to the championship round of the inaugural In-Season Challenge, Gibbs has finished 14th (Atlanta, eliminating No. 27 Justin Haley), second (Chicago, eliminating No. 22 AJ Allmendinger), seventh (Sonoma, eliminating No. 14 Zane Smith) and fifth (Dover, eliminating No. 23 Tyler Reddick). Dillion has had just one top 10 throughout the Challenge, finishing eighth (Atlanta, eliminating No. 1 Hamlin), 20th (Chicago, eliminating No. 17 Keselowski), 17th (Sonoma, eliminating No. 8 Bowman) and 20th (Dover, eliminating No. 12 John Hunter Nemechek).

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bubba Wallace climbed out of the No. 23 car Sunday, pumped his fists, found his family and savored every precious moment of a historic Brickyard 400 victory. He deserved every minute of it. The 31-year-old Wallace overcame a tenuous 18-minute rain delay, two tantalizing overtimes, fears about running out of fuel late and the hard-charging defending race champ, Kyle Larson, on back-to-back restarts to become the first Black driver to win a major race on Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2.5-mile oval. No Black driver has won the Indianapolis 500, and Formula 1 raced on the track's road course. 'This one's really cool,' Wallace said. 'Coming off Turn 4, I knew I was going to get there — unless we ran out of gas. I was surprised I wasn't crying like a little baby.' His third career NASCAR Cup victory delivered Wallace's first victory in the series' four crown jewel events, the others being the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 and Southern 500. It also snapped a 100-race winless streak that dated to 2022 at Kansas and locked up a playoff spot. His only other win came at Talladega in 2021. The final gap was 0.222 seconds, but that was no measure of the consternation he faced. Larson cut a 5.057-second deficit with 14 laps to go to about three seconds with six laps left as the yellow flag came out for the rain. The cars then rolled to a stop on pit lane with four laps remaining, forcing Wallace to think and rethink his restart strategy. 'The whole time I'm thinking are we going? Are we not?' he said. 'I will say I leaned more towards 'I know we're going to go back racing. Be ready. Don't get complacent here.' Wallace made sure of it. He beat Larson through the second turn on the first restart only to have a crash behind him force a second overtime, forcing his crew to recalculate whether they had enough fuel to finish the race or whether he needed to surrender the lead and refuel. In Wallace's mind, there was no choice. 'The first thing that went through my mind was, 'Here we go again,'' he said. 'But then I said, `I want to win this straight up. I want to go back racing.' Here we are.' He beat Larson off the restart again and pulled away, preventing Larson from becoming the race's fourth back-to-back winner. The victory also alleviated the frustration Wallace felt Saturday when he spent most of the qualifying session on the provisional pole only to see Chase Briscoe claim the No. 1 starting spot with one of the last runs in the session. On Sunday, he made sure there was no repeat, providing an added boost to the 23XI Racing team co-owned by basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and last week's race winner, Denny Hamlin, as it continues to battle NASCAR in court over its charter status. 'Those last 20 laps there were ups and downs and I was telling myself 'You won't be able to do it,'' Wallace said. 'Once I'd seen it was Larson, I knew he won here last year and he's arguably the best in the field. So to beat the best, we had to be the best today.' The other big race — the In-Season Challenge — went to Ty Gibbs, who had a better car than Ty Dillon in qualifying and on race day. Gibbs finished 21st o win the inaugural March Madness-like single-elimination tournament and collect the $1 million prize. Dillon, a surprise championship round entrant after making the field as the 32nd and final driver, finished 28th. 'They brought me money guns and they jammed so I decided to take all the money and throwing it to the fans and they were all wrestling and fighting over it,' said Gibbs, who also received a title belt and a ring. 'But it's super cool. It's a cool opportunity.' At different points, Austin Cindric and three-time Cup champion Joey Logano appeared to be in control of the race, but tire problems took them out of contention. Eric Jones also was knocked out of the race when his right front tire came off between Turns 3 and 4, sending him hard into the outside wall on Lap 91. They weren't the only drivers who made early exits. Ross Chastain was the first out after just 18 laps when a tap from Michael McDowell sent Chastain's car spinning into the third turn wall and caused heavy damage. The others who were out before Lap 100 were Austin Dillon, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Cody Ware. Series officials were concerned enough about the threat of rain that they moved up the start time by 10 minutes. Fifteen minutes probably would have eliminated the rain delay. But the threat of rain impacted the race long before the delay. Early in the second stage, some teams informed drivers rain was expected near the midway point and it seemed to increase the aggressiveness earlier in the race than expected. Cookie Monster made it to the track Sunday, too. The beloved Sesame Street character, who served as the Brickyard's grand marshal, attended driver introductions and took a handful of questions before the race and even offered some advice to the drivers. 'Don't stop and ask for directions,' the furry blue character said. Cup drivers will continue their brief Midwestern tour next Sunday when they race at Iowa.

Exclusive-Chinese consumer complaints show widespread padding of car sales figures

(Reuters) -A tactic used by Chinese automakers and dealers to inflate car sales has grown increasingly common in recent years in response to a bruising price war in the world's largest auto market, a Reuters analysis of consumer complaints has found. Earlier this month, Reuters reported EV brands Neta and Zeekr had arranged for cars to be insured before buyers purchased them, a scheme that effectively inflates sales numbers and gives the appearance the companies were hitting periodic targets. But the controversial tactic was not limited to the two companies and was employed elsewhere in the industry, according to a Reuters review of 97 separate consumer complaints published on three widely used Chinese websites. In more than a dozen cases, buyers said they were informed by dealerships that the practice was specifically designed to meet sales targets. The allegations cover some of China's largest domestic and foreign brands by sales volume, including homegrown champion BYD and Toyota, Volkswagen and Buick. The three foreign brands operate their China businesses in partnerships with state-owned giants GAC and SAIC Motor Group. While the earliest complaints date back to 2021, the majority were published this year and last as a price war squeezed an industry crucial to China's export-driven economy. Reuters reviewed complaints posted on a third-party site used for consumer dispute resolutions, and two other similar sites. The platforms require owners to verify their identity and submit proof of their allegations. In most of the cases reviewed, the automakers responded publicly, saying they sought to resolve problems. Reuters was not able to independently verify the complaints or their resolutions. It is not clear what portion of China's car sales were inflated by the insurance scheme. SAIC, which is a China joint venture partner for Volkswagen and Buick-owner General Motors, said it is committed to providing users with high-quality and standardised sales services but did not elaborate. The practice effectively disguises how much inventory automakers actually held, said Yale Zhang, managing director at consultancy Automotive Foresight. "That could lead to a misjudgment of monthly demand within the industry and result in increased production scheduling," Zhang said. CONSUMER ANGER Between 2021 and 2025, 48 separate buyers said on that they purchased new cars only to later discover they were already insured by the dealer. Many of the buyers said they felt deceived by the dealerships, especially when they realised the insurance on their cars was registered in other names. Likewise, there were 26 separate complaints published between 2021 and 2025 on the 315 auto consumer complaint platform, run by the state-owned China Internet Information Center. Another 23 were posted between 2022 and 2025 on Black Cat, a widely used consumer complaint platform run by tech firm Sina. In 14 complaints on the three platforms, buyers of BYD-, Neta-, Toyota-, Buick- and Chevrolet-branded cars said they were told by dealers the practice was aimed at booking sales early to meet targets. One complaint, filed in December against a SAIC GM dealer on alleged the automaker required 60 cars to be insured without buyers to meet sales targets. Another complaint on filed in April alleged a BYD store in Shaanxi told a buyer it had 12 cars insured in a batch to inflate sales last July. Buyers of Li Auto, Changan, FAW-Volkswagen and Geely also reported cars being insured pre-purchase. A Volkswagen Group China spokesperson said it refused to boost sales figures through insurance and that complaints would be investigated. DEALER COMPLAINTS Separately, Reuters identified 29 official media reports from 2020 to 2025 that detailed complaints against dealers of major brands, including BYD and Changan and foreign brands Volkswagen, GM, Toyota, Nissan and Honda, run by their joint ventures with state-owned Chinese automakers. The media outlets, across 15 provinces and cities, are controlled and owned by the regional governments. In nine cases, dealers representing FAW Hongqi, SAIC Roewe, SAIC VW, Dongfeng Nissan, GAC Toyota, GAC Honda and SAIC GM told official media that insuring unsold vehicles was for booking purchases early to meet sales targets. A Honda spokesperson said that GAC Honda prohibits dealers from taking out compulsory insurance before selling new cars and that any dealers found doing so would be dealt with severely. FAW Hongqi said it does not use insurance plans to pre-confirm sales and any such activity was not official company action. GM China said it does not require wholesale vehicles to be insured pre-purchase and that it counts deliveries, not insurance, in its sales reports. BYD, GAC Toyota, Geely, Changan, Nissan and Li Auto did not respond to requests for comment. Reuters also identified five articles published by Chinese courts between March 2023 and March 2025 about consumers taking dealers to court for concealing pre-purchase car insurance. In three of those, the court ruled for the buyers who demanded compensation. Verdicts for the other two were not publicised. 'ZERO MILEAGE' Vehicles booked as sold before reaching buyers are called "zero-mileage used cars" in China. The practice emerged out of the cut-throat competition as the market deals with a years-long price war caused by chronic overcapacity. More than 100 car brands are competing intensely to survive consolidation, deepening pressure to bolster sales and take market share. Analysts and investors that track the industry use two sets of data. Wholesale figures reported by automakers to the industry association show sales from automakers to dealers, while retail data compiled from mandatory traffic insurance registrations show the number of sales to users. Accusations of selling cars with existing insurance policies date back to 2016 when a Cadillac buyer told a regional radio programme he found the car was insured before his purchase. The practice appears to have picked up after the price war started in early 2023, when several brands led by Li Auto started posting weekly sales rankings on social media based on insurance registrations. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has criticised such postings as unreliable and this month blamed them for intensifying "vicious" competition.
