The bodies of Diogo Jota and his brother André, who died in a horrific car crash in Spain on Thursday, arrived in the Liverpool footballer's home town of Gondomar, outside Porto, just before 1am on Friday morning.
Two vehicles, including a hearse, were greeted with applause and tears by locals and fans who lined the streets near the San Cosme funeral parlour and Gondomar's main church, where a funeral will take place on Saturday morning.
A wake is planned for Friday afternoon in the funeral parlour and its adjoining chapel.
The arrival of the bodies, to cheers of the name 'Diogo' from some members of the crowd, came almost exactly 24 hours after the two brothers had died on the A52 highway in north western Spain, where the car they were travelling in slid off the road and burst into flames.
On Friday morning, Spain's Guardia Civil highway police division said that its investigation into the crash was ongoing.
On Thursday, a provisional statement said that it had been caused by a tyre blow-out just as the two brothers were overtaking another vehicle on the dual carriageway.
The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is expected to attend the wake in Gondomar on Friday.
Fans and well-wishers have begun to create shrines in memory of Diogo Jota in Gondomar.
Underneath a sign for the 'Diogo Jota Academy', as the youth team training facilities of Gondomar football club were renamed in 2022, candles were lit in memory of the Portuguese international and of his younger brother, also a football player in the country's lower leagues.
Scarves, shirts and pendants from various clubs including Gondomar and FC Porto, where Diogo Jota played before moving to Wolves and the Premier League, were present.
The sign quotes a comment by Diogo Jota, which has become the motto of the club: 'It doesn't matter where we come from, but where we are going.'
Fernando Santos, the coach who first picked Diogo Jota for the Portuguese national team, paid tribute to the player. 'What impressed me most about Diogo Jota was his character, his personality and determination to win.'

Chelsea agree staggering deal to flog forgotten flop Joao Felix with five more Blues stars facing uncertain futures

CHELSEA have agreed a staggering £43.7million deal to send unwanted Joao Felix to Al-Nassr. Felix joined the Blues from Atletico Madrid for £38.4m but joined AC Milan for a disastrous loan in January. 5 The Club World Cup champions have spent £169m so far this summer but must bank a profit in order to satisfy Uefa and register all of their new signings for the Champions League. Benfica had been interested in agreeing a return for Felix, though they were waiting for Chelsea to drop their asking price - allowing Saudi side Al-Nassr to swoop. Felix made just 12 Premier League appearances, scoring only once, last season following his move back to Stamford Bridge. The Portugal international is one of many Chelsea are looking to sell this summer. Nicolas Jackson has commanded plenty of interest, including from Manchester United, and a move cannot be ruled out. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who also only signed last summer, is a target for Fulham. The Cottagers are preparing an approach to take the midfielder on loan with a view to a permanent move. Dewsbury-Hall, 26, has struggled for Premier League minutes following a £30million move from Leicester last summer. Fulham also remain in talks with Arsenal over a move for Reiss Nelson, who came off the bench against AC Milan in the Gunners' Singapore friendly. Renato Veiga is expected to join Atletico Madrid, while Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are also seeking moves away. The Blues are ready to sell the Portuguese midfielder, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Juventus. Chelsea want around £35million for the man who arrived from Basel for £11.7m last summer. Veiga, who made 18 Chelsea appearances last season, has made it clear he wants to make the move to Madrid. Atletico, however, are trying to negotiate the Blues down to £25m. 5 5 5 5

Spice Girls' 'Girl Power' tribute as they lead celeb support of England's Euro 2025 final

Celebrities joined England fans in wishing the Lionesses the best of luck ahead of tonight's Euro 2025 final showdown with Spain in Basel, Switzerland Celebrities are gathering in force to pay special tribute to England Women's football team as they bid for back-to-back European success tonight. The Lionesses take on Spain in Basel, Switzerland, hoping to lift the Euro trophy once again, three years on from their maiden success. ‌ However, they know they are up against it as they face a Spanish side who defeated them in the World Cup final in 2023. In preparation, the group has been turning up the volume to Heather Small's Proud tune as they keep their pre-game ritual in tact. ‌ But as Serena Wiegman's team gets their game face on for once last hurdle in the tournament, celebs have took to social media to send their own messages of support. ‌ Among them was the Spice Girls. The iconic girl band's official Instagram and Twitter /X accounts shared the same message alongside a snap of the group - minus Victoria Beckham - posing on stage. Melanie C also wore an England shirt in the image, as their rallying call read: Come on @Lionesses! We wish you the best of luck for the #WEURO2025 final today #GirlPower @England" EastEnders star and staunch football fan Ross Kemp give a video message to the girls, saying: "I just want to wish the Lionesses all the very very best against Spain. You have the skill, you have the mindset, you have the talent, and you have backing so come on England and come on the Lionesses." ‌ Quiz show guru Shaun Wallace, best known as The Dark Destroyer on ITV's The Chase also shared two video messages in support. His first saw him give an inspirational quote. He also captioned his post: "Let's hope the Lionesses get the gift of a great performance and bringing it home tonight! Make the most of everyday, every day is a gift. Have a fantastic Sunday and good luck to the Lionesses tonight." ‌ He quickly followed it up with another message, saying: "Bring it home Lionesses," with a video of him saying: "This is a special message for the England Lionesses. Good luck today girls, let's bring that trophy home." The Royal Family's official account also gave a rousing message to the squad. It shared a superb version of It's Coming Home outside of Buckingham Palace. ‌ Alongside the upload, they wrote: "Let's go girls!! Wishing the very best of luck to the @Lionesses in the Women's Euro Final this evening. And Sarah Ferguson also gave them the royal seal of approval. Getting her message in early, she said on Friday: "We're all behind you Lionesses. Best of luck tomorrow!" The occasion comes almost three years to the day since Wiegman's team changed the face of women's football in England following their defeat of Germany in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley. On that occasion Chloe Kelly's extra-time winner would pass into English football folklore. Then, a little over a year later, there was heartbreak as Spain beat the Lionesses 1-0 in the World Cup final in Sydney. The result came despite the heroics of legendary goalkeeper Mary Earps. And now England is once again getting behind the team as they bid to lift another coveted trophy.
