Strangers raise more than $70K for transgender woman hospitalized after shocking West Philly acid attack
Keep up with the latest in + news and politics.
The corrosive liquid, believed to be battery acid, left Diana, a transgender woman, with second and third-degree burns to her face, arms, legs, torso, and neck, according to Philadelphia Police Capt. Robert McKeever, who spoke to local ABC affiliate WPVI. The suspects fled the scene and were later seen on surveillance footage boarding the train at 52nd Street. 'She was walking to her destination with her earphones in,' McKeever said. 'There was no interaction. Nothing led up to this event.'

Diana's friend Shiloh Colon told WPVI that the children 'stopped and then they threw the acid,' echoing Diana's firsthand account. The incident is being investigated by Philadelphia's Southwest Detectives Division, with investigators seeking help from the School District and social media to identify the suspects. No arrests have been made.
After the attack, a GoFundMe campaign organized by Colon surged past its initial $15,000 goal, raising over $72,000 as of Wednesday morning. Most contributions have come from strangers who were moved by Diana's story. Her father, Paul Catanzaro, is listed as the beneficiary. The funds will help cover surgeries, lost wages, and housing while Diana recovers, according to the fundraising site. She remains at Temple Burn Center and is expected to undergo multiple skin grafts.

'We really strongly believe this was a hate crime,' Colon told WPVI. Police say they are exploring all possible motives.
The attack happened just one day before GLAAD released its annual Anti-LGBTQ Extremism Report, documenting 932 anti-LGBTQ+ incidents from May 2024 to May 2025. According to the report, the 485 anti-trans attacks included at least 24 physical assaults, 209 harassment cases, and multiple bomb threats, all in a climate where protections have eroded. GLAAD notes that the Trump administration's Bureau of Justice Statistics has removed mention of gender identity from key federal reports, while 27 states still lack comprehensive hate crime laws covering LGBTQ+ people.
Philadelphia Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, in a June 6 statement on X (formerly Twitter), denounced the attack and the climate fueling it: 'Young people are not born with hate in their hearts. Instead, the politically motivated, anti-trans hatred spewing out of Washington indoctrinates our kids and incites terrible violence.'

Landlord imprisoned for decades in hate-crime attack on Palestinian American family has died
Czuba died Thursday in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to a statement from the Will County Sheriff's Office. Ahmed Rehab, the executive director of Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago office, said in a statement on Saturday that 'this depraved killer has died, but the hate is still alive and well.' Evidence at trial included harrowing testimony from Shaheen and her frantic 911 call, along with bloody crime scene photos and police video. Jurors deliberated less than 90 minutes before handing in a verdict. The family had been renting rooms in Czuba's home in Plainfield, about 40 miles from Chicago when the attack happened. Central to prosecutors' case was harrowing testimony from the boy's mother, who said Czuba attacked her before moving on to her son, insisting they had to leave because they were Muslim. Prosecutors also played the 911 call and showed police footage. Czuba's wife, Mary, whom he has since divorced, also testified for the prosecution, saying he had become agitated about the Israel-Hamas war, which had erupted days earlier. Police said Czuba pulled a knife from a holder on a belt and stabbed the boy 26 times, leaving the knife in the child's body. Some of the bloody crime scene photos were so explicit that the judge agreed to turn television screens showing them away from the audience, which included Wadee's relatives. The attack renewed fears of anti-Muslim discrimination and hit particularly hard in Plainfield and surrounding suburbs, which have a large and established Palestinian community. Wadee's funeral drew large crowds, and Plainfield officials have dedicated a park playground in his honor.

'Our lives have been a misery since nightmare council tenants moved in ten years ago'
A retired couple have endured more than 'ten years of misery' and anti-social behaviour after new council tenants moved into their Kingstanding street. The couple says their neighbours play loud music in their garden via a 'sound system' and bang on the walls, keeping them up in the early hours. They also fly-tip rubbish, attract rats and mice into the area, and have been 'aggressive' towards them. Harry, 83, and Shirley, 77, have pleaded for help from Birmingham City Council for the past decade - even seeing the neighbours added to the 'watchlist' - but only for the problems to persist. Read more: Birmingham council tenants can save money at Sainsbury's, Asda, Argos, Morrisons and more In a tearful interview with BirminghamLive, the couple, who were looking forward to their retirement before the problems, said: "It's anti-social sounds, banging, loud music, children screaming, running up and down the street at night. "It's awful now, it used to be lovely, now you don't know what you're going to get from one minute to the next. They have large parties starting at midday, going on until late, and the music vibrates through the house. We can't even sit out in the garden." "Eleven years ago, a family came to live there and ever since then it's been an absolute nightmare," added their son. "It's ten, eleven years of hell basically for my mum and dad." "It's music playing until all hours of the morning, not like via a Bluetooth speaker like most people, we're talking about PA systems constantly." For years, the couple and their son have been complaining to the council in an urgent bid for action. Monitoring equipment was even implemented at the property to gather evidence on the noise and anti-social behaviour, but the 'nightmare' neighbours are always told this is happening by the council. "They have to let them know, so obviously it went quiet for a few months," their son said. "They knew they were on the watch list, then three days after they came off it, they had a massive party. "My mum asked them to turn it down and about 60 people started chanting ''let's make some noise.'" A trigger point meeting was held in May, and 14 actions were recommended. Surveys have now been sent to several other neighbours. "They [the council] said to my mum yesterday, 'sometimes we just have to accept cultural differences' but this has nothing to do with culture or religion, it's to do with anti-social behaviour," explained their son. "It's the volume of the noise, the number of people that come and go. It's also the sanitary conditions, there are mice and rats that get into my parents'. It's just ongoing. The number of continual violations over the years. "If you saw the state of the house from the outside, most normal people would be shocked. It's all dirty, not kept in any condition at all. The front has all the litter in it, the fence is all broken, kids in the evening constantly go up screaming, shouting until like 11pm. "Two weeks ago there were two toddlers in nappies running up and down the road nearly getting run over. There's so many things that go on continually." Birmingham City Council confirmed an ASB case review request was submitted in February this year. A spokesperson said: 'In line with the statutory process, the case was reviewed and considered by an independent panel on May 7, 2025. The panel made a number of recommendations to the relevant agencies involved. 'Since then, the Reviewing Officer has been in contact with the Housing Officer to monitor progress against those recommendations. We understand that some actions have been completed, and discussions are ongoing to ensure the remaining recommendations are addressed. 'As part of the process, we continue to review the current status of the case and ensure all appropriate steps are being taken. 'Birmingham City Council remains committed to working with partners to tackle anti-social behaviour and support affected residents.'

Illinois landlord who killed 6-year-old Palestinian-American, injured his mother in hate crime stabbing dies in prison
A landlord jailed for decades after he attacked a Palestinian American boy and his mother has died. Three months ago, Joseph Czuba was sentenced to 53 years behind bars for the attack. He was found guilty in February of murder, attempted murder and hate-crime charges in the death of Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of the boy's mother, Hanan Shaheen. The 73-year-old Czuba targeted them in October 2023 because of their Islamic faith and as a response to the war between Israel and Hamas, which started days earlier. 6 Joseph Czuba, who was convicted of murdering a Palestinian American boy and injuring his mother, has passed way at the age of 73.
