Special teams is the ticket for Arizona Cardinals 7th-round pick, S Kitan Crawford

USA Today27-04-2025

The 2025 NFL draft for the Arizona Cardinals ended late Saturday afternoon with yet another defensive player, but one that could have more impact on special teams if he makes the roster.
Nevada safety Kitan Crawford is the guy to keep an eye on.
As general manager Monti Ossenfort said, 'What really stood out to us (is) his ability on fourth down, his ability to cover kicks and be a disruptive presence. We also think he's got a chance to develop on defense.'
Dane Brugler of The Athletic agreed, writing, 'Crawford is a fluid, loose athlete who can unlock and play fast to the football, although he can be moved off his post and often reacts to the first look from the quarterback. There aren't any questions about his willingness as a run defender, but his reliability finishing tackles must improve.
'Overall, Crawford has NFL-level speed and athleticism, but his inconsistent reads reflect his meager starting experience in the secondary. His special-teams background and testing numbers will make him an appealing prospect in the later rounds.'
During his first four seasons at Texas, Crawford started only four games, but then started 12 last season after transferring to Nevada.
Brugler noted that his 'athletic testing created buzz at the combine,' calling him 'both fast and agile, which leads to quick on-field reactions.' One of those tests was the 40, during which he ran a 4.41.
Crawford knows where his bread is buttered, telling the media after he was picked, 'My plan coming in, because I'm going into the room with Budda Baker; I watched Budda Baker a lot. I studied his game a lot. I'm a fan of his game. I'm coming in just being an impact on special teams, learning from Budda and just being an all-around good safety. I can learn a lot from him. He's a veteran, so I'm ready.'
As for special teams, Crawford was asked where he developed that love. He said, 'It comes from my heart; I take pride in special teams. I love special teams. I adopted this mindset of its only one play, so why not go 100 percent?'
There will be significant competition at many loaded positions on defense, but safety is one where there aren't big numbers. After Baker, Jalen Thompson and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, there is special-teams standout Joey Blount, along with Darren Hall and Jammie Robinson, who was claimed on waivers from the Panthers on Dec. 16 last season and was inactive for three games.
So, Crawford could have a shot, thanks to that special-teams desire.
Asked how scouts can tell when a player truly loves that aspect of the game, Ossenfort said, 'That shows pretty easily; for guys to be the first running down the field, to throw their body around. Special teams isn't always the most glorious job. And then when you find a guy who stands out on tape with his toughness, his physicality, his effort, his finish, I think that says something about a player.
'It's harder to find. Typically in college, guys tend to graduate from special teams as their roles increase. But to find guys that still continue to give that effort, it's pretty cool to see.'

Browns' Jerry Jeudy Trying to Stay Flexible Amid QB Troubles

Browns' Jerry Jeudy Trying to Stay Flexible Amid QB Troubles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are the team in the NFL that has the most quarterbacks on their roster with five. Even though Deshaun Watson is injured, there will still be four guys competing for the starting spot in 2025. Advertisement And that is not exactly an easy thing for a wide receiver to deal with. In a recent interview with ESPN, Browns Pro Bowl wideout Jerry Jeudy talked a bit about what it's like dealing with a QB situation like this. And he did not leave anything out, as he said how he truly feels. "It is pretty difficult because you want to always build that relationship with a quarterback and have that consistency throughout the years," Jeudy said. "But as a receiver going through that, you just got to keep working and you got to learn how to adjust no matter what. Some situations ain't going to go as planned, so you just got to figure out how to just keep going and stay on the right path." The importance of a good connection between a quarterback and a receiver cannot be understated. But having to get build that kind of connection with four guys cannot be an easy task. Advertisement But despite some less-than-stellar quarterback play from the Browns this past season, Jeudy was still able to be one of the better receivers in the NFL. He finished with 1,229 yards, which placed him sixth in the league, as well as four touchdowns. Jeudy will be looking to follow up his Pro Bowl season with another good year in 2025, no matter who it is throwing him the ball. Browns Urged To Make Major QB Decision

Browns Urged To Make Major QB Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are not the only team in the NFL with some considerable quarterback questions heading into next season. However, theirs has pretty clearly become the most convoluted. Advertisement Cleveland added four new quarterbacks through the offseason after learning Deshaun Watson had considerable setbacks in his recovery from an Achilles injury. Now, it's veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Picket along with rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders making up the quarterback totem pole. Many are wondering how this competition will work out through training camp and the remainder of the offseason. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio has come out strong against the idea of the Browns keeping all four, suspecting the team has attempted to build leverage here. 'I think that's lucdacris. Having four quarterbacks on your roster?' Florio said. 'I think they're trying to build some trade leverage." Florio believes that one of Flacco or Pickett must be gone before the start of the season in order to help Sanders and Gabriel progress in their development. Advertisement 'Between Flacco and Pickett, one of them has to go. They have to go,' Florio said. 'Because I don't want the presence of both of them to undermine my effort to see what I have in Gabriel and Sanders. They don't have enough reps to go around to get everyone ready.' It's hard to imagine one of these four not being squeezed out by the time the final 53-man roster decisions are made. But if the goal is to build leverage off the veteran assets, how exactly would the Browns trade one of them? Flacco is an aged quarterback with little demand elsewhere and the market for Pickett will not turn any heads either. Simultaneously, nothing says the Browns should be married to the pair of rookies either. Losing Gabriel or Sanders would be a noticeable swing and miss but both were late Day 2 and Day 3 picks. Certainly not ideal, but the Browns could do worse in using these assets. Advertisement And if the hopes to be competitive next season do not work out in their favor, there's a a better class of quarterback prospects waiting in next year's draft. The Browns have some freedom to explore what they have this season and by no means should be forced to spoon feed opportunities to the rookies if they are not deserving. There's no need to force a move just for the sake of doing so. Only Aaron Rodgers could complain about attention to get attention

Aaron Rodgers is mad. Not actually mad, of course. But acting superior to other people is just part of his brand. He likes dishing out admonishment. So, on Tuesday, having no appreciation for irony, he went on the Pat McAfee show and complained about being in the public eye and all the unwanted attention he gets. Advertisement Rodgers voluntarily goes on TV to complain that he doesn't like attention? That's a good one. The only reason for him to be doing a stint on a talk show, especially McAfee's show, in June is because he craves attention. His big news this week was that this was probably his last season as a player. For a guy who was mistreated by Brett Favre when they were teammates, Rodgers is utilizing his 'How to Turn Retirement Uncertainty into Extra Attention' playbook to perfection. This is the same guy who wanted to host Jeopardy while still playing football. The same guy who milked the spotlight when Robert F. Kennedy leaked Rodgers as a possible vice presidential candidate. Advertisement And the same guy who gave his blessing to NETFLIX to make 'Enigma' a three-part documentary about his life. The only surprising thing is that the Steelers are putting up with this. Signing Rodgers is about the most uncharacteristic move they've made. This is a franchise that had the forethought to get out of the Antonio Brown business and then watched from a safe distance as he poisoned the Raiders, Patriots and Buccaneers. Rodgers is an aging, polarizing distraction who hasn't been good for a while and doesn't seem that committed to playing football anymore. Pittsburgh might be hoping Rodgers will be good again once he's washed all the Jets stink off himself, but he looked washed up in his last season in Green Bay. Advertisement ESPN's Mike Tannenbaum thinks Rodgers is washed up: 'I think Aaron Rodgers is gonna be irrelevant by Thanksgiving.' But his football struggles haven't moved the cameras away from him because he knows how to court them. If he really wanted less attention, he could stop saying every controversial thought out loud. Aaron Rodgers likes the public eye when it makes him money and gives him an audience for his debunked science. He doesn't like people exposing things that aren't true. Sick of the public eye? Start by getting off McAfee. Committing to the bit Whether it's real or legend, Wade Boggs famously claims to have consumed 73 beers on a cross-country flight between Boston and Los Angeles. Advertisement At last week's Fanatics Fest, a ComicCon for sports fans, two fans created a 73-pack of Miller Lite and brought it to the autograph session for Boggs to sign. Did he actually drink 73 beers or did his counting skills diminish somewhere in the 40s? It's amazing some New England Brewery hasn't partnered with Boggs to sell a 73-pack. Perfect for BBQs and flights to Anaheim. Why can't the Bruins make a good bear logo? The Spoked-B is terrific and the classic design is nice in the new Bruins uniforms unveiled on Wednesday. But somehow, in over 100 years of existence, the Bruins can't quite get a good Bear logo. Advertisement The difference between the 1980s Bruins jerseys and the new ones is the bear on the shoulder. Instead of Meth Bear, they'll get this one: It's the latest underwhelming ursine to grace and otherwise good jersey. Meth Bear looks deranged. Pooh Bear looks like a Build-a-Bear's dad. On the yellow shoulder patch (below), the bear is trying to be too detailed and the one on the white jersey barely (no pun intended) looks like a bear. As the old saying goes, bear problems lead to font problems with the new bear. With the off-putting letter-sizing used in the word Boston, the current looks like a bear that has just finished its last meal before hibernation. Would it have been worse with Devers? It's been 10 days since Craig Breslow said this quote about the Devers trade that will haunt him the rest of the year. Advertisement 'I do think there's a real chance we're looking back and we've won more games than we otherwise would have.' The Red Sox are 4-6 since, have lost five straight and are fading in the Wild Card race. There's a real chance Breslow never recovers from this move. Real Jeopardy!
