Sisseton's Roberts County Farm Mutual marks 120 years serving South Dakota communities
Roberts County Farm Mutual Insurance Company (RCMI) marks 120 years of business this year. Having served South Dakotans since the early 20th century, the company is owned by its policyholders, and they are therefore considered a 'hometown' company by clients.
'It is quite an accomplishment for a small town to have an insurance company,' said Julie Stapleton, who has been a manager at RCMI since 2012.
As one of the oldest existing businesses in Sisseton, Stapleton says the business still has a few policies in effect from the first policy numbers.

'RCMI supports their local clients and all of their clients statewide,' she told the Public Opinion. 'The current staff at Roberts Mutual strives to help the community and does many local community projects throughout the year and helps sponsor many local events. Roberts Mutual has helped two other Mutuals in the state by merging with them, and then they were able to take on their agents and clients.'
RCMI began offering its products statewide in 1984. The company merged with Kingsbury Farm Mutual just over three decades ago, then with Denver-Kingsbury Farm Mutual Insurance Company in 1998. Finally, in 2008, RCMI merged with Central Farm Mutual in Onida, expanding its business into the western part of South Dakota.

Stapleton says her company also has been able to help the Dakota Farm Mutual Insurance Company and their clients through the years.
Currently, RCMI has roughly 60 agents across the state and have grown from a humble beginning to nearly 2,000 policyholders.
'In general, Roberts Mutual is able to provide a product that has small town appeal and affordable rates and excellent coverage,' Stapleton said.
The home office building — a rental that was formerly a bank — burned down in 1959. The company then rebuilt the current office building.
'So, Roberts Mutual built around the two bank vaults,' Stapleton said. 'RCMI has two bank vaults. Roberts Mutual was able to purchase the building next door to them and expanded the office in 2006-2007.'
In the end, the company returns to its reliable, local roots.
'RCMI has had many local faces serve on the Board of Directors over the years,' Stapleton said. 'Several local staff members and some local agents got their start in the Roberts Mutual Office Building. It has a long history of being on Main Street. Roberts is a fantastic place to work, and it shows with the longevity of the staff. There is over 85 years of combined insurance knowledge with the current staff. Roberts has always put family first, and the staff and directors are like family.'

Behold, a Non-Update Update on When the Downtown SF Jollibee Will Open
Skip to main content Current eater city: San Francisco JollibeeWatch2025 has cranked up to 10 with a new article speculating on the opening timing Look. We get it. We've been watching this corner of Market and Fifth streets just as long as you have. Ever since the downtown San Francisco Payless ShoeSource went out of business and the rumors of an incoming Jollibee started in 2021, all of food media started tracking this thing endlessly. (We get it. We want convenient Chickenjoy and peach-mango pies, just like you do.) There were starts and stops, then an updated timeline of a November or December 2024 opening, then another pause. And every so often, when another story bubbles up about a Jollibee opening elsewhere in the Bay Area, it only serves as a reminder of the upcoming San Francisco Jollibee that isn't. But there is a renewed interest in the opening, thanks to a recent San Francisco Business Times article that pegs the opening to August 2025. Pointing to this Google Map listing for Jollibee, the Times notes that it has an 'Opens August' tag, and is coupled with some new red trim around the building and employment advertisements. Unfortunately, however, a Jollibee spokesperson reached by Eater SF would not confirm the August timing and says an opening date is not yet set at this time. (Alas.) Among the reasons for the opening delays are some complications with the property, as the Jollibee building's basement shares a wall with the BART station, '[contributing] to the slow delivery of the space,' per the Times . Armadillo Willy's has gone from four locations to just one overnight, closing down its branches in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and San Jose, as of Tuesday, June 17, Palo Alto Online reports. That leaves just one shop left in the 42-year-old business, the San Mateo location at 2260 Bridgepointe Parkway. Armadillo president Kevin Roberts told the outlet that they 'ran out of funds' due to owed money to the government for sales tax. He allegedly tried to work out a deal, but, when that didn't work out, he decided to shutter the businesses. Roberts says Armadillo has lost a third of their sales since the pandemic. For the first time ever, the fruits of UC Davis's Department of Viticulture and Enology labor is now for sale. Per the Sacramento Bee , students from the university's wine program have long been unable to sell their bottles of wine to the public, but that's all changed. A 2020 state law now allows student-made wines to be sold to the public via a nonprofit set up by the department. Hilgard631 is now where interested buyers can peruse the bottle offerings, although there are some things to note when purchasing some wine. Particularly, the wine sales are only happening in person at the Teaching and Research Winery at 631 Hilgard Road in Davis on select days (currently June 24 through 26, July 10, and July 24). Pricing ranges mostly from $30 to $40 per bottle, with wines made at Oakville Station, the department's Napa Valley vineyard, can go for $50 to $125, the Bee reports. Mission corner store Dolores Deluxe has worked on becoming a neighborhood staple since its opening in 2022, slinging sandwiches and hosting a wine club, and selling food goods to the locals. Also among its many ventures is the Forever Neighbor podcast, where co-owner Ramzi Budayr interviews local small business owners and creatives. The last episode of Season 2 dropped this past Tuesday, which means a wrap party is in order: From noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, the Dolores Deluxe team is throwing a bash at Studio Aurora to celebrate. Located at 302 Valencia Street, the party will feature some local food names, such as oysters from Lo-Fi Oyster Co., coffee from Ritual Coffee Roasters, and more, plus live jazz and DJ sets. The event is free, but guests are asked to RSVP via the Third Place.

DeFi company Blueprint Finance raises $9.5 million from Polychain Capital
Unlike in traditional finance, it isn't as easy as letting money sit in a savings account to earn interest on your crypto holdings. In order to see a return in the crypto space, holders have to go through a number of complicated steps to engage programs where they can loan out their crypto to borrowers with interest. That's why Blueprint Finance, a crypto startup based in New York, is seeking to make it easier for crypto investors to put their holdings to work. The company announced on Monday that it has raised $9.5 million in a funding round led by Polychain Capital with participation from YZi Labs, formerly Binance Labs, and VanEck. Blueprint Finance, founded by CEO Nic Roberts-Huntley in 2023, has released two products, called Concrete and Glow, that aim to allow crypto investors to make money on their holdings through the use of decentralized finance, or DeFi. DeFi refers to any financial service, like lending or borrowing, that is conducted on a blockchain and without the involvement of a central bank. A popular form of DeFi is lending and borrowing, where investors can earn interest on their crypto holdings by lending their crypto out to borrowers in need of short-term capital. The borrowers pledge to provide a return on that loan. In order to ensure that lenders will get their money back, borrowers collateralize the loan with their own crypto. If the value of their collateral falls below a certain threshold, the borrower is automatically liquidated meaning they are forced to repay the loan and their collateral is sold. Blueprint Finance, and other DeFi companies, seek to eliminate the complexities and maximize the returns that come from these programs with their own products. 'The big premise here is, how do we give anybody, institutional down to pure retail, the easiest access and the best utility from their digital assets in terms of return on their capital?,' Roberts-Huntley told Fortune. Concrete, Blueprint Finance's first product released in early 2024, is specifically tailored to lending and borrowing on any blockchain that uses the Ethereum virtual machine like Ethereum, Base, and Polygon. Earlier this year, Blueprint Finance launched its second product called Glow, which is a rebranded and updated version of a Solana blockchain-based lending platform called Jet Protocol which Blueprint Finance acquired in 2024. Glow focuses on allowing investors in the Solana ecosystem to lend, borrow, and trade within one platform. Concrete and Glow both produce revenue by charging a performance fee when an investor receives a return on their loan as well as fees for managing the lending and borrowing process. In recent years, the crypto lending market has ballooned into an over $36 billion industry, and numerous companies are trying to capitalize on the growing institutional interest in DeFi services. In 2023, the leading crypto exchange in the U.S. Coinbase, launched a lending program specifically for its institutional customers. There are other popular lending programs available to average retail investors like Morpho and Aave. Blueprint Finance will spend the money raised in this round on hiring new employees, engineering and marketing, Roberts-Huntley said. Roberts-Huntley declined to disclose the company's annual revenue and its valuation in this round. Blueprint Finance previously raised $7.5 million in 2024, bringing the company's total funding to date to $17 million. This story was originally featured on
