Abergavenny councillor cleared of harassing teenager at trial
Judge Toms said she listened to about 12 minutes of voice notes the councillor sent the girl in March 2024, when she was 17, after she had ended their friendship, and called them "manipulative".In one message, the Abergavenny town councillor said he had been "heartbroken" over their friendship ending and thinking about it while meeting Labour MPs and had to cry at a conference of school governors.Prosecutor Robert Reid told the court the girl, who cannot be named due to her age, said Mr Eldridge intended making a report to social services that she had been raped by a friend of hers. She said she did not understand why he had made the allegation and said she did not know the male, who had been accused, particularly well. Mr Eldridge told the trial he had become "confused" over their friendship after what he described as a "malicious joke" played by the girl. He said due to his autism and obsessive compulsive disorder he had taken the joke "literally", and felt he should report as a "safeguarding" concern.
Giving evidence, Mr Eldridge denied making a report to social services but said he had taken advice on a "safeguarding concern". He said he had been concerned the girl had been taken to a pub by men, aged 29 and 32, at night. In the voice note sent to the girl, after she had unblocked him on Instagram to send a message to say she did not want to continue their friendship, but would not ignore him if she saw him in public, Mr Eldridge said he was "really sorry" to receive the message. In the recording, played in court, Mr Eldridge said: "I'm genuinely brokenhearted and I can't express how much I'm sorry for the deep emotional trauma I put you through."He added: "In church I light a candle for you and when I was at a conference for school governors from all over Wales I took five minutes and burst into tears. "Tonight at a meeting with Labour Party members and MPs I just wanted to go to the toilets and have a big cry."
The judge said a handwritten note left for the teenager at her workplace, as well as incidents when he had approached her at work and when she was with friends, were not reflected in the charge, which referenced Instagram messages, voice notes and emails. She complained she was "missing all of the evidence" of contact between Mr Eldridge and the girl before January last year and there was no evidence from the complainant's mother who had also been mentioned by the prosecution and Mr Eldridge in his defence. In delivering her verdict, Judge Toms stated she had considered a psychological report, which said Mr Eldridge should be considered as having a disability, and had taken his characteristics into account. But she said she could not be sure he would know his conduct in leaving "one extremely rambling voice message" and another message, the girl had not listened, to amount to harassment. She said she believed the unwanted contact "could have been resolved by the way of a Police Information Notice" but said she understood Gwent Police no longer issue the notices which inform someone a named individual no longer wished to be contacted by them.
A prosecution request for a non-conviction restraining order, to prevent further contact, was also rejected by Judge Toms who said Mr Eldridge had not contacted the girl since April 2024.His defence solicitor, Derek Gooden, said police had warned him against contact, when he was arrested in September last year, adding: "He has seen her but he now crosses the road."Judge Toms said: "That must continue unless Mr Eldridge wishes to find himself before the court."Mr Eldridge was elected as a Labour member of Abergavenny Town Council, for the Park Ward, at the 2022 local elections but has sat as an independent since being suspended from the Labour group.

Ex-Rangers star Kemar Roofe subjected to sickening abuse as vile fan wishes him ‘long and brutal death'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has revealed a sickening online message containing death threats. The vile communication appears to stem from a game that was played more than FOUR YEARS ago. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 4 Kemar Roofe scored some huge goals for Rangers Credit: Getty Roofe, 32, left Rangers at the end of the 2023/24 season when his contract expired. Although his four-year spell at Ibrox was often blighted by injury, the former Leeds and Anderlecht frontman played an integral role as the Gers won the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. He also won both domestic cup honours with the Light Blues and scored on the club's run to the Europa League Final in 2022. Roofe spent several months as a free agent before being snapped up by Derby County in February. Although he was released at the end of the season, the striker has continued to train with the Rams this summer and play in their pre-season matches. He could yet sign a new deal ahead of the new season. But in a rather shocking turn of events, Roofe has shared an absolutely sickening message he's received on social media. He shared the disturbing message to his Instagram post from an anonymous account who's image is just a glass of beer. The horrific post contains death threats. It says: "Hi IDIOT. I wish you long and brutal death in huge pains m***********. 4 Kemar Roofe shared the despicable abuse he'd received Credit: INSTAGRAM "Till the end of your f****** life you will the biggest idiot ever. "Die, die, die, you and all your f****** family. "Slavia Prague, do you remember, you f****** b******????? "Karma will find you.... m***********." Roofe played in Rangers' Europa League clash with Slavia Prague back in 2021. Although the twisted punter doesn't detail any specific incident, it's likely it relates to the former Rangers man's sending-off during the second leg of the tie. Roofe was one of two Gers players to be shown a red card in a 2-0 defeat at Ibrox that saw the Light Blues exit 3-1 on aggregate. He was dismissed on 61 minutes after catching the Czech club's goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar flush in the face with his boot when challenging for a high ball. Kolar has continued to wear a head guard during matches ever since the clash. The fall-out from the tie also saw Slavia defender Ondrej Kudela handed a 10-match ban after racially abusing Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara. 4 Roofe caught Slavia Prague goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar with a high boot Credit: PA 4 He was sent off by the referee Credit: Getty Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Labour 'forced to stump up £2m' as party settles claims over leaked anti-Semitism dossier
Labour has stumped up a reported £2million after settling claims brought by 20 people featured in a leaked internal document about anti-Semitism in the party. The cases have been settled after the group of mainly ex-employees took action over alleged defamation or the unauthorised use of personal data. According to The Guardian, the payouts will total just under £1million but with Labour paying both sides' legal fees the party's overall bill will be near to £2million. The controversial 860-page document was produced under Jeremy Corbyn 's leadership of Labour and contained private email and WhatsApp messages. The report claimed factional hostility towards Mr Corbyn hampered Labour's efforts to tackle anti-Semitism during his leadership. It was originally intended to be submitted to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) inquiry into Labour's approach to dealing with anti-Jewish hate. The unredacted document was leaked in April 2020, shortly after Sir Keir Starmer succeeded Mr Corbyn as Labour leader. The settlements are said to include a payout to Labour's former elections chief Patrick Heneghan. He was allegedly falsely accused in the dossier of having tried to sabotage Mr Corbyn's chances of winning the 2017 general election. The document was also said to have defamed Josh Stolliday, a former director of Labour's governance and legal unit. He reportedly took action over the leak of private messages and 'false and damaging' claims that he tried to obstruct action on anti-Semitism in order to undermine Mr Corbyn. It is understood the claims were settled prior to last year's general election, although the details have only emerged now. The total legal costs for Labour connected to the dossier is now estimated at more than £4million. Court documents previously revealed Labour spent about £2.4million on its own abandoned lawsuit against five former staffers accused of leaking the internal report. Martin Forde QC was chosen by Labour to chair an inquiry into the 'circumstances, contents and release' of the dossier in 2020. He found that both Labour's left and right wings treated the issue of anti-Semitism as a 'factional weapon' when Mr Corbyn was leader. A Labour spokesperson said: 'The Party welcomes the resolution of this matter.'
