Oman among leading Arab countries in ITUC Global Rights Index

Oman has emerged as one of the leading Arab countries in the ITUC Global Rights Index, published by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). The country's rating improved from Level 4 to Level 3 — a notable step forward in terms of trade union rights and freedoms. This progress reflects the sustained efforts of the General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW) at both national and international levels.
According to the Index, the improved rating is the result of a series of reforms to labour legislation and regulatory frameworks. These reforms include enhanced access to justice for workers and the promotion of more effective tripartite dialogue between the government, employers, and workers' representatives. This has been achieved through the establishment of a joint dialogue committee comprising representatives of all three parties, tasked with drafting, reviewing, and amending labour laws and policies.
The reforms introduced in recent years have contributed to fostering constructive dialogue on labour and employment issues and to strengthening mechanisms for the resolution of labour disputes.
The ITUC Global Rights Index is an annual global assessment of trade union rights and human rights in the world of work. It is published by the ITUC as part of the International Labour Conference (ILC), held annually in Geneva, Switzerland. The Index ranks countries on a scale from 1 (best) to 5+ (worst), based on 97 indicators derived from International Labour Organization (ILO) standards. These include restrictions on collective bargaining, the right to strike, freedom of association, trade union membership, violence against trade unionists, and limitations on freedom of expression.

GFOW aids in reinstating 80 Omanis in the private sector
Muscat: Following requests, the General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW) managed to get the non-termination of contracts of 80 Omani workers in the month of June 2025. It also dealt with the contract termination of 16 Omani workers and 14 expatriates, while 80 workers were reinstated following requests from the private sector to reduce the number of workers due to economic conditions. The union confirmed in a statement that it dealt with 57 legal consultations and advice during the same month, which included issues affecting the rights and demands of the Omanis, including wages, economic conditions, vacations, termination of employment contracts, and working hours, in addition to requests related to improving the work environment, transferring projects, forming labor unions, and the termination of projects. GFOW said it is monitoring the conditions of workers across various sectors and providing the necessary legal and union support when needed, in coordination with relevant authorities.

Hotel revenues in Oman rise 18.5% by May
Muscat – Revenues from three- to five-star hotels in Oman rose by 18.5% to RO128.426mn by the end of May 2025, compared to RO108.379mn during the same period in 2024, according to data released by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The growth in revenues was driven by an 8.6% increase in guest numbers, which reached approximately 990,240 by the end of May, up from 911,830 in the same period last year. Hotel occupancy rates also showed marked improvement, rising from 50.8% in May 2024 to 58.3% in May 2025 — an increase of 14.9%. In terms of nationality, guests from Oceania recorded the highest growth rate at 57%, reaching 21,100 guests. African guests followed with a 47.5% increase to 6,866. The number of visitors from the Americas rose by 20.5% to 34,563, while European guests increased by 20.1% to 344,159. Guests from the Gulf Cooperation Council states grew by 13% to 65,998, and Asian nationals increased by 3.8% to 138,319. Omani guest numbers also rose modestly by 1.1%, totalling 308,940 by the end of May. Meanwhile, the number of guests from other Arab nationalities declined by 3.1%, reaching 39,218.

16th session of Omani-Egyptian Joint Committee held in Cairo
CAIRO: The 16th session of the Omani-Egyptian Joint Committee at the level of the foreign ministers of the two countries was held in Cairo, on Tuesday. The Omani side was headed by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, while the Egyptian side was headed by Dr Badr Abdel Aati, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Speaking at the opening session, Sayyid Badr expressed his deep thanks and appreciation to Egypt for the warm welcome and generous hospitality, emphasizing strong relations between Oman and Egypt. He said, 'This session of the Omani-Egyptian Joint Committee represents a new and blessed addition to the positive cooperation between us and a contribution to consolidating our bonds. Today, we enjoy the fruits of these relations for the good and benefit of our two brotherly peoples.' In his speech, Sayyid Badr called for activating the role of the Omani-Egyptian Business Council and the private sector, and for focusing attention on emerging projects, digitization, and innovation, stressing that 'this will enhance the sustainability of the economy and keep pace with global changes.' Regarding the regional issues, the Foreign Minister affirmed the Sultanate of Oman's full support for Egypt's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing its categorical rejection of plans to displace the Palestinian people and its full support for the Arab plan for the reconstruction of Gaza. He also affirmed the Sultanate of Oman's firm stance in supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967, borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative. Sayyid Badr said that the Arab national security is indivisible, affirming the Sultanate of Oman's support for Egypt's rights to the waters of the Nile River, based on the rules of international law and the principle of fair and equitable use, in a manner that enhances opportunities for cooperation based on understanding and peaceful solutions. Sayyid Badr affirmed that the Sultanate of Oman is committed to permanently contributing to establishing stability and protecting the peoples of the region from all that would hamper their progress towards development. He underscored the importance of resuming efforts aimed at reaching a just and lasting agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue, based on the rules of international law and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and avoiding imposing solutions by force, which only brings destruction and destabilizes peoples. He emphasized that dialogue and negotiation remain the only way to resolve disputes and contain risks. The session witnessed the signing of several memoranda of understanding and executive programmes in the areas of investment, labour, training, media, food safety, endowments, mineral wealth and human capital development. The minutes of the 16th session of the Omani-Egyptian Joint Committee were also signed. At the end of the session both sides affirmed the importance to continue coordination and consultation in various fields, strengthen the Omani-Egyptian partnership to benefit both countries and their peoples and to contribute to consolidating security, stability, and development in the region. — ONA
