Turmeric Board, that shaped Nizamabad politics, be inaugurated by Amit Shah today

The Hindua day ago

A desire and political demand that shaped the politics of Nizamabad district involving two prominent politicians is being finally fulfilled with the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board to be formally inaugurated in Nizamabad by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday, June 29.
The ceremony will feature the unveiling of the official logo of the Board, symbolising a new era of farmer innovation and global competitiveness. Earlier this month, Mr. Amit Shah was invited by Arvind Dharmapuri, Member of Parliament from Nizamabad and the National Turmeric Board Chairperson Palle Ganga Reddy.
The event holds significant political hue as the issue in 2019 saw the defeat of the then sitting MP and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate K. Kavitha from Nizambad when her father K. Chandrasekhar Rao was the Chief Minister. The defeat shook the political circles as, at that point in time, the BRS had won the Assembly elections with record number of seats just a few months earlier.
The country's focus turned to the BJP candidate Arvind Dharmapuri, who was a first-time contestant and that too from a seat which the BJP had never won. Mr. Arvind's father was a Congress stalwart, having served as the PCC chief and later as MP from the BRS. Mr. Arvind contesting on the BJP ticket itself was a huge shock, and he made it to the national headlines defeating Ms. Kavitha at the peak of the BRS' popularity.
Mr. Arvind's promise of establishing a Turmeric Board if he won and a signed bond paper he distributed to the turmeric farmers in that direction made a huge difference to the campaign itself. Though delayed by a few years, the desire and dream of the turmeric farmers is being realised now. Mr. Arvind's advocacy has ensured that turmeric, a crop with deep roots in Indian culture and economy, receives the institutional support it deserves. The physical headquarters in Nizamabad follows the virtual inauguration held on January 14, 2025, by Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal.
What would it bring to Nizamabad farmers? Mr. Arvind says the Board is expected to spearhead a variety of transformative initiatives, including research and development into turmeric varieties and cultivation techniques. Establishment of processing and value-addition units and promotion of exports, and branding of Indian turmeric in global markets will pick up. Support for farmers through cooperatives, capacity building, and better market access will increase.

Diaspora remittances hit new record at $135.46 bn in FY25

The Indian diaspora sent home $135.46 billion in the last fiscal year, the highest on record. According to latest balance of payments data released by the Reserve Bank of India, gross inward remittances by overseas Indians, as reflected in 'private transfers', were 14% higher from the previous year. India has been the biggest recipient of diaspora remittances for more than a decade now. The inflows have more than doubled in eight years — from $61 billion in 2016-17. RBI data show that remittances accounted for over 10 % of the gross current account inflows of $1 trillion during the fiscal year ended March 31. 'The strong growth in remittances has persisted despite weakness in crude oil prices,' said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank. 'This is a result of rising share of the skilled labour force migrating to developed markets such as the US, UK and Singapore. As per RBI data, these three countries account for a 45% share in total remittances,' she said, adding: 'Meanwhile, the share of GCC countries has been reducing.' Oil prices often influence remittances from countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Moreover, India continues to remain one of the low-cost countries for sending US$200, an RBI research paper other major sources of current account inflows are software services income and business services income, each crossing $100 billion last fiscal year. Together the three (remittances, software and business services) accounted for more than 405 of the gross current account inflows.'India's remittance receipts have generally remained higher than India's gross inward foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, thus establishing their importance as a stable source of external financing,' noted a report by RBI staff on a survey of remittances. Besides, they are a major source of funding for India's trade deficit. In FY25, gross inward remittances were nearly half (47%) of the country's merchandise trade deficit of $287 has been the largest recipient of inward remittances, according to World Bank data. In 2024, Mexico was at a distant second position with inflows estimated at $68 billion. China was third at an estimated $48 inward remittances represent the flow of cross-border household income, arising from the temporary or permanent movement of people to foreign economies. Moreover, as defined by the International Monetary Fund in 2009, two items in an economy's balance of payments statistics relate to remittances — compensation of employees under primary income account and personal transfers under secondary income account. In the case of India, personal transfers, primarily comprising inward remittances for family maintenance from Indian workers residing abroad, and local withdrawals from non-resident deposit accounts, form the major portion of cross-border inward remittances, noted a paper published in RBI's March 2025 monthly bulletin.

‘Quoted out of context': India clarifies defence attaché's remarks on Operation Sindoor, 'misrepresentation of intention'

NEW DELHI: The Indian Embassy in Indonesia on Sunday clarified that media reports had "quoted out of context" remarks made by Defence Attaché Captain Shiv Kumar during a seminar on Operation Sindoor . Captain Shiv Kumar had outlined the Indian military's initial response during the early stages of Operation Sindoor while speaking at a seminar hosted by an Indonesian university. In a statement posted on X, the embassy clarified that the officer's remarks were 'quoted out of context' and that media coverage had misrepresented the intent and focus of the presentation. 'We have seen media reports regarding a presentation made by India's defence attaché to Indonesia at a seminar. His remarks have been quoted out of context, and the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker,' the embassy said. According to the clarification, the presentation highlighted a key tenet of India's civil-military structure, that the Indian Armed Forces operate under the authority of civilian political leadership. It pointedly noted this contrasts with practices in 'some other countries in our neighbourhood'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors All Over America Are Rushing to Buy This Camera Secret Scope Camera Learn More Undo The embassy further said that the officer had referred to Operation Sindoor, explaining that the objective was to target terrorist infrastructure, and that India's military response was non-escalatory. Earlier in the day, Congress had cited the reported comments of India's defence attache to Indonesia and accused the government of having "misled" the country. The party also asked why is Prime Minister Narendra Modi "refusing" to preside over an all-party meeting to take the Opposition into confidence and why has the demand for a special session of Parliament been rejected.
