Footage shows youths on e-scooters 'hurl racist abuse' at women near Scots university

Emily Yao was out with two friends in Edinburgh on Tuesday night when two youths raced towards them on e-scooters before hurling vile racist abuse at them - with police now investigating.
A group of youths have been filmed "hurling" racist abuse at a group of women near the University of Edinburgh prompting cops to launch a probe.
Emily Yao was unlocking her bike with her two friends at Potterow at around 10pm on July 1, when two young boys on e-scooters raced towards them.

Emily, who has lived in the capital since the pandemic and was born in China, claimed they hurled abuse at the trio, including calling them 'Chinese f*****s'.

During the incident she attempted to film the two youths, who she believed are around 11-years-old, on her phone with local cops now probing the incident.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Emily said: "Suddenly we heard a kind of howling sound, like an animal, from behind.
"We saw someone racing towards us on a scooter, and just as he was about to hit us he swirled around. We were a little bit shocked, and then, he and a mate of him and just started to say things like Chinese f*****s, f*** off.
"I just took out my phone and started filming them and trying to get a clear shot of their face, but I couldn't quite get them. I was trying to get them to come back and to, I asked them, can you repeat what you just said to me on tape?
'When I gave up and turned around, they would then follow me and then race towards me again. Then they would start hurling racial comments at me again."

She continued: "He asked me 'do you feel threatened?' so I asked him 'do you think I should be? Do you want me to feel threatened?
"The whole encounter was just so sinister. I was kind of embarrassed that I was frightened by what looks like an 11 or 12-year-old.

"I think the thing that makes it a bit different is that they seem to only target Asian women. The whole thing reminded me of Adolescence, that Netflix show, especially when he asked me the question, do you feel threatened?
"It just took me right back to the show where the boy asked the psychologist if he scared her.
"It's really weird, and the fact that they are targeting women. It makes you wonder if it's because they actually do have a hatred of women, I mean they were calling us b*****s the whole times."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "An investigation is under way following a report of racial abuse.
"The incident occurred around 10pm on Tuesday, 1 July 2025 on Charles Street in Edinburgh, when two youths on bikes approached three women and shouted abusive comments at them. Enquiries are ongoing."

Student Sarah Cotte, from Camden, north London, has denied two charges of expressing 'an opinion or belief in support of a proscribed organisation'. On October 9 2023, it is alleged she gave a speech at Soas University of London 'being reckless' as to whether a person would be encouraged to support a proscribed organisation. Seven days later, she allegedly expressed support for Hamas by giving her opinion in a WhatsApp group chat. On Friday, Cotte appeared at the Old Bailey and sat in the well of the court for a hearing before the trial judge, Richard Marks KC. The judge set a further pre-trial hearing for October 24 and granted Cotte continued conditional bail. The defendant faces a 10-day trial at the Old Bailey from February 23 next year.

'I was their most successful Black female officer and they destroyed me'

Ms Williams, who was awarded the Queen's Police Medal during a 39-year career, is suing for racial and sexual discrimination, harassment and victimisation A former senior police officer is suing the Metropolitan Police claiming she was the target of a racist witch-hunt that "destroyed" her. Robyn Williams, 60, broke down as she told an employment tribunal she was the victim of a force headed by a "white female clique" and "white male pitbulls". Ms Williams, who was awarded the Queen's Police Medal during a 39-year career, is suing for racial and sexual discrimination, harassment and victimisation. She told the Central London Employment Tribunal: "I was their most successful and award winning black female officer and they destroyed me." The Met repeatedly attempted to sack Ms Williams after she was convicted of possessing a video of child abuse that she was sent on WhatsApp but did not watch. She was the only one of 17 recipients of the video, sent by her sister, to be charged. Ms Williams says she was forced to resign last year due to concerns over her mental and physical health, The Times reported. The Met has denied the allegations and is defending the case. The ex-officer said in her witness statement that the video would have been dealt with internally had she been a white, male officer. "Despite my absolutely unblemished record, this crime was prosecuted in a way determined to take me down," she said, alleging that the senior investigator "went for" her because he was "angry" she had backed a colleague who had complained of racism and bullying. Ms Williams was placed under investigation in February 2018 after the video of a young girl being sexually abused was discovered. She was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work and had to register as a sex offender for five years after being found guilty at the Old Bailey. The judge accepted that there was no sexual element to the crime. Ms Williams was sacked in March 2020 but she was reinstated after the decision was overturned by the police appeals tribunal. In her statement, Williams said: "I had been in a state of extreme distress and was overwhelmed psychologically. I had just been convicted, my life was shattered, my future upended and my mental health had been dramatically and very adversely impacted." The Met made a failed challenge to the PAT ruling in the High Court. It then launched a separate investigation into allegations Ms Williams had failed to give police details of her bank cards before going abroad in an alleged breach of requirements under the sex offender register rules. It was a set-up, disproportionate and malicious," said Ms Williams, who said the Met "pressured" the Crown Prosecution Service to bring charges against her. She broke down several times while giving evidence, The Times reported. Ms Williams said the Met could be 'vindictive' and characterised its approach as: 'If you get beyond your station as a Black woman, we'll take you out.' Keith Bryant KC, representing the force, accused Williams of making 'sweeping' generalisations and 'embellishing' her story. The force are expected to call 16 witnesses, including senior and retired officers, during a hearing expected to last three weeks. A Met spokeswoman said: "The Metropolitan Police Service received an employment tribunal claim by then Supt Robyn Williams in October 2020. Former Supt Williams alleges race and sex discrimination, harassment related to race and/or sex, and victimisation. The MPS is defending the claims."
