Springbok lock Jean Kleyn put in a strong 80-minute performance against the Barbarians this past Saturday but was ruled out with an injury ahead of the mid-year Test matches against Italy and Georgia.

The Springboks are keeping their feet firmly on the ground, despite flooring the Barbarians this past Saturday, as they head into their first Test week from Monday.
After a rousing 54-7 victory at a wet and muddy DHL Stadium in Cape Town over the Baabaas, the world champions have set their sights on the double Tests against Italy, starting with Saturday's opening encounter at Loftus Versfeld.
Lock Jean Kleyn is the only reported serious injury. He has been withdrawn from the squad and will return to his club side Munster where he will undergo rehabilitation. Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus said they have enough locks to cover for Kleyn, and he won't be replaced.

'We feel for Jean,' Erasmus said.
'But injuries are part of the game, and we are fortunate to have good depth at lock within the squad, so there is no need for us to replace him at this stage.'
Despite the loss of Kleyn, Erasmus will still have a strong player-base to choose from ahead of the first Test. He indicated they would announce two squads for the Italy series with a core group of players involved in both matches.
Injury update: #Springboks lock ruled out of squad after Barbarians game 🚑#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) June 29, 2025
The squad for 'Italy 1' will focus on this weekend's match, while 'Italy 2' will focus on the second Test in Gqeberha next weekend.
'The players have a fairly good idea who will play Italy 1,' Erasmus confirmed.
'Those who played against the Barbarians knew two weeks ago already that they were in the team, so they had two weeks of training together. On Sunday evening we will announce the two sides for Italy.
'That always comes with a caveat, because if things don't go according to plan, Italy 2 can always change. However, we do know who the core guys are. The 14, 15, or 16 playing this coming weekend, but that is not position-specific.
Thanks for a great game @Barbarian_FC, we hope you had a good time in South Africa, we'd love to see you back here soon 🤝#Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold #BARvRSA pic.twitter.com/U16INZYT3t — Springboks (@Springboks) June 28, 2025
'Some guys, though, showed us that they can do it at this level,' Erasmus added, referring to some of the uncapped players who put their hand up. 'But we will layer them in to ensure there is a balance.'
The Bok coach wants to see his squad strike a balance so that, after the Georgia Test (19 July in Nelspruit), they have a group of 45-50 players who have had some game time ahead of the Rugby Championship later this year.
Erasmus emphasised that they can't get too carried away with the runaway victory, although there were enough positive moments to build their season on.

Fouche feels ‘dieplekker' about his Bok future

Having shrugged off his reputation as Frans Malherbe's 'stunt double', tighthead prop Neethling Fouche is excited to carve out his own story with the Springboks. Fouche made his Bok debut off the bench in the world champions' 54-7 demolition of the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium last week, and it was everything the 32-year-old dreamt of. 'I know it's a cliche, but you dream of it literally from when you start playing bulletjie [junior] rugby,' he said. 'Yes, it was a Barbarians game, but it felt like a Test match. I know the score was high, but it was still very physical out there. 'Where the Springboks are at the moment, to be able to be part of this story with Coach Rassie [Erasmus] and the team, it's unbelievable.' 'There's a saying in Afrikaans: dieplekker. It's not lekker, it's dieplekker,' Fouche added. 'The whole week was actually just a blur, from the moment I found out I was playing, to the moment you're standing there. 'After that, it's difficult to control your emotions as you're singing the national anthem; literally all of my family was here for the game. As soon as they heard I'm playing, they just booked their tickets all the way from Rustenburg.' MORE: Rassie told Manie to kick miss And the occasion wasn't without its lighter moments for the humorous Fouche: 'Firstly, I just didn't want to fall running out on the field like my prop mate, Asa [Asenathi Ntlabakanye]! I don't know if anyone saw that, maybe go and check the highlights. So that was the first focus – not to fall.' A pivotal roleplayer in the Stormers' Vodacom URC title win in 2021-22, Fouche is a senior figure in their forward pack and a leader. His consistency for the Cape side earned him his first Bok alignment camp call-up last year, followed by a second invitation in March. However, Fouche's journey to the green and gold hasn't been easy, after injury setbacks and several seasons playing understudy to two-time world cup winner Malherbe at the Stormers. 'I've had a bit of a grondpad [rough road] to get here,' the Grey College alum said. 'The first five, six years out of school, it was a tough time. I was more injured than I wasn't. 'I think the first few years, I was only Frans Malherbe's stunt double! That's how most people knew me, and didn't know my name. 'But with time, you start to carve out your own story. Wilco [Louw] left for overseas and there was a gap, and I decided to put my hand up. Then there's a little voice in your head saying, 'it can happen to you too, just keep working at'. ALSO: Esterhuizen embraces 'hybrid' role 'So, it makes the lekker feeling I'm experiencing right now just mean so much more.' The Boks next face Italy on Saturday at Loftus, followed by a second Test against the Azzurri in Gqeberha next week, and a clash with Georgia in Mbombela on July 19. Fouche faces competition from fellow tightheads Louw, Ntlabakanye and Vincent Koch, but he's embracing the challenge under the tutelage of Bok scrum guru Daan Human. With Malherbe struggling with a back injury, Erasmus must explore alternatives, and Fouche is now in that conversation as the Bok chief plans for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. 'The last two-and-a-half weeks were tough, but it's also good to get through it, it gives you confidence. I'm also a bit older now, and feel like I have something to contribute to the team,' he said. 'I just keep my head down, as Coach Daan says. Every week Coach Daan gives you a challenge, which makes you better, and I'm looking forward to this week's challenge.' Is this how the Springboks will line up against Italy?

Straight after the Springboks' 'warm-up' game against the Barbarians this past weekend, Rassie Erasmus explained that the selection for the opening phase of the season – which kicks off against Italy with two Tests – had been decided some time ago. With Siya Kolisi still under an injury cloud, it remains to be seen whether he will be risked this Saturday, but the likes of Eben Etzebeth and Bongi Mbonambi should be back. Kick off is at 17:10. Springboks – probable: 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Kwagga Smith, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth (c), 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Ox Nche. Replacements: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 Franco Mostert, 20 RG Snyman, 21 Marco van Staden, 21 Cobus Reinach, 23 Handre Pollard. Describing the eight-tries-to-one rout of the Baas Baas as 'a good hit-out', Erasmus told reporters post-match: 'Overall, I guess it was satisfying but it was just a good hit-out. Now the Test matches start next week.' 'We won't get carried away with a game like this [the Barbarians win]. It's a festival game, and we're playing at home against a team that only practiced a few times together,' he added. 'Italy gave Namibia [a hiding]; I know they're not one of the Tier 1 nations but they gave them 70 points, and we saw how well they played in the first two Test matches in the Six Nations. 'I guess this match and the next three matches that we play, we're trying to focus a lot on us because when we hit the Rugby Championship… and Georgia, will also be a grind. So I guess we want to get better.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
