Describing the eight-tries-to-one rout of the Baas Baas as 'a good hit-out', Erasmus told reporters post-match: 'Overall, I guess it was satisfying but it was just a good hit-out. Now the Test matches start next week.'
'We won't get carried away with a game like this [the Barbarians win]. It's a festival game, and we're playing at home against a team that only practiced a few times together,' he added.
'Italy gave Namibia [a hiding]; I know they're not one of the Tier 1 nations but they gave them 70 points, and we saw how well they played in the first two Test matches in the Six Nations.
'I guess this match and the next three matches that we play, we're trying to focus a lot on us because when we hit the Rugby Championship… and Georgia, will also be a grind. So I guess we want to get better.'

Du Toit, who is contracted to Toyota Verblitz, missed the Japanese League One season after undergoing shoulder surgery. The Bok captain was also not considered for this weekend because of an Achilles niggle. Erasmus, however, confirmed his captain should be ready to lead the team out next weekend. 'Siya had a stiff neck, but it's all cleared up. Now he has an Achilles issue. It's not a strain, but he is really stiff there. We just want to make sure he is okay,' Erasmus told a news conference in Pretoria ahead of the Loftus Versfeld clash. 'There isn't a player who will play more than eight or nine matches this year, so we just want to make sure his achilles is 100 percent ready. But it's nothing serious, he had some scans to confirm it. Siya should be back next week.' The only long-term injury concern is tighthead Frans Malherbe, who is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year. But the Springboks have plenty of cover at tighthead in the big frames of Wilco Louw and Vincent Koch, who has been selected to take on Italy this weekend. Erasmus confirmed yesterday that Kleyn suffered a knee injury against the Barbarians and could be on the sidelines for the next six weeks. Jesse Kriel will continue to lead the Boks in Kolisi's absence, becoming the 67th player to lead the Boks in a Test match when he takes the field on his old stomping ground this weekend.

The Springboks have named a strong team and will be looking to set the tone for their season in their clash against Italy at Loftus this weekend. The Springboks are eager to officially get their 2025 international season off to a good start and set a tone that they can carry into the rest of their campaign, starting with Italy at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. Coach Rassie Erasmus named a strong team to face the Italians in their first of two matches, the second in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) next weekend, with some heavy hitters returning the side, from the one that faced the Barbarians in a non-Test season opener in Cape Town. Eben Etzebeth links up with Lood de Jager in the second row for the first time in over two years, replacing the injured Jean Kleyn, while Handre Polllard comes in at flyhalf for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who drops out the match 23. Damian Willemse returns at fullback for the first time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, Wilco Louw slots in at tighthead prop and Jasper Wiese at eighthman, for Aphelele Fassi, Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Jean-Luc du Preez respectively, who drop out the 23, with them the major changes in the team. 'He had a stiff neck and now a bit of an Achilles (niggle), it's not a strain, he's just really stiff there so we just want to make sure (he is fully recovered),' said Erasmus. 'But with all the players, we aren't planning for any of them to play more than eight or nine matches this year. So we want to rather make sure that his Achilles is 100% ready. But it isn't serious, the scan showed it was all clear and we are just being careful with him.'

Tshituka to make Test debut as Springboks change five
JOHANNESBURG - Democratic Republic of Congo-born flanker Vincent Tshituka will make his Test debut for world champions South Africa against Italy in Pretoria on Saturday. The Sharks flanker debuted for the Springboks in a 54-7 non-cap exhibition match win over the Barbarians last weekend and capped an impressive performance by scoring two tries. "Vincent has fitted into our structures really well and he showed last week that he has the potential to play Test rugby," said head coach Rassie Erasmus. "So we are very excited to see what he can do against Italy and to see him make his (Test) debut." Erasmus, a key figure in the 2019 and 20223 Rugby World Cup triumphs of South Africa, has made five changes to the team that started against the Baabaas in Cape Town. Damian Willemse replaces Aphelele Fassi at full-back and Handre Pollard takes over from Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu at fly-half. Eben Etzebeth, the most capped Springbok with 131 Test appearances since his 2012 debut, replaces injured Jean Kleyn at lock. Etzebeth returns after missing much of the club season with the Sharks. He was sidelined for some time by concussion and then suffered two injury lay-offs. Jasper Wiese takes over the number 8 role from Jean-Luc du Preez and tighthead prop Wilco Louw comes in for Asenathi Ntlabakanye. A notable absentee is regular captain and flanker Siya Kolisi, who withdrew from the team on the eve of the Barbarians match with a stiff neck. 'MANY LEADERS' His replacement, Marco van Staden, retains his place and centre Jesse Kriel continues as captain after leading the team at Cape Town Stadium. "Siya, unfortunately, picked up a niggle, but Marco did a good job at flanker last week and he is one of the core players in our team. We are blessed to have such depth in the squad,' said Erasmus. "If one goes through this team, there are so many leaders, and we were impressed with how Jesse accepted the responsibility of wearing the captain's armband last week. "He is a player who leads by example on and off the field, and he thoroughly deserves this honour." There are also five changes to the bench with hooker Bongi Mbonambi, prop Vincent Koch, lock RG Snyman, scrum-half Faf de Klerk and full-back Willie le Roux promoted. The recalls of De Klerk and Le Roux are significant for the first of two internationals against Italy with the second Test set for Gqeberha on 12 July. Japan-based De Klerk has been out of favour since playing against Ireland in mid-2024 while Bulls veteran Le Roux is two caps short of becoming a centurion.
