Jess Breach ready to complete unfinished business at home World Cup

Now 27, the flying winger burst onto the scene at just 20 with six tries on debut against Canada and quickly established herself as one of the best finishers in the game.
However, in New Zealand three years ago, she made just one appearance for England, in a group game against South Africa, missing out to a combination of Lydia Thompson, Abby Dow and Claudia MacDonald in the knockout stages.
As England fell just short to the Black Ferns in the final, Breach had to deal with both collective and individual disappointment but feels she has matured in the three years since.
She said: 'Individually I think I have learned a lot. I think I have grown a lot as a player over the last three years. It was hard, the last World Cup for me personally. But I think this time around, being involved and being with the girls, being on home soil, I think the whole thing will be completely different.
'I think I've learned that me even being a part of the team is way more beneficial than not. I bring other stuff than just my playing ability to the squad which is what I've learned over the last three years. I've adapted and got better as an individual.'
Given some time off after the Grand Slam, Breach took the opportunity to travel before coming back into England's World Cup training camp, part of the 42-player squad gearing up for the global competition.
And now fully fit, she feels she is in position to put her best foot forward ahead of the biggest World Cup to date.
She added: 'I went to Bali. People say you find yourself in Bali, I'm not saying I did that, but I allowed my time to reflect on the seven months I'd been through since WXV, on an injury that I didn't realise would be as serious as it was.
'You have to be your biggest critic. That is really important, I knew I wasn't at my best and now I know I don't want to be in that position. I had to give myself time to process that and my body wasn't ready. It wasn't where it was in WXV, but that is because I'd not had the long period of training. I felt like was catching up but now I feel like we're all on a level playing field.'

Chelsea sign Brighton forward Joao Pedro

The versatile Brazilian forward has linked up with his new team-mates in the United States for the rest of their Club World Cup campaign and could be in line to make his debut in the quarter-final against Palmeiras. Pedro's arrival, on an eight-year contract for a reported £60million, comes in a summer of heavy spending at Stamford Bridge, with Liam Delap already signed from Ipswich and a deal for Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens seemingly imminent. The boy from Brazil. 🇧🇷 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 2, 2025 'Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history,' Pedro said on the Chelsea website. 'They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now, so I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing – win.' Pedro, 23, was reported to have also been a target for Newcastle and is the fourth player Chelsea have signed from Brighton in recent years, with Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella and Robert Sanchez also having made the switch from the south coast. The Brazilian, who has three senior caps, will compete with Delap and Nicolas Jackson for a starting role up front next season but can also be deployed in midfield as well as off the left flank. We can confirm that Joao Pedro has completed a permanent move to Chelsea, for undisclosed terms. Wishing you all the best, Joao. 🤝 — Brighton & Hove Albion (@OfficialBHAFC) July 2, 2025 Pedro joined the Seagulls from Watford in the summer of 2023 for a reported £30m, going on to score 30 goals in 70 appearances. 'I want to thank you all for the past two years we've been together, for all the support and great memories that we created, it was a pleasure and a privilege to work with this team,' Pedro wrote on Instagram. Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler feels the transfer 'is a good move for all parties' as he looks to reshape the squad again going into next season. 'It is an excellent deal for the club, and a good return on a significant investment in an area of the pitch where we have a lot of competition and are already well served in terms of our attacking talent,' Hurzeler said on the Brighton website. 'It is also an exciting move for Joao, it gives him the opportunity to play Champions League football this coming season and he will of course be keen to cement his position in the Brazil team ahead of the World Cup next summer.'

'I live next to abandoned 80,000-seat football stadium – it's ruined our lives'

The Nou Mestalla was supposed to be one of the biggest football stadiums in the world, but was left abandoned for years; however, the giant arena now has the green light to finish construction In the shadow of an unfinished 80,000-seater World Cup stadium, a community that had been left to wonder 'what if' now has a glimpse of the future. The Nou Mestalla was meant to bring regeneration and hope to Benicalap, one of Valencia's more deprived areas. The project, which broke ground in 2007, had been abandoned and left in ruins for over a decade. It was intended to be the new home of Valencia, who were on a high after La Liga title wins in 2002 and 2004, helping them break the Real Madrid - Barcelona dominance in Spanish football. ‌ However, financial difficulties soon struck, and the project was put on hold. However, it has finally been given an opening date with Valencia having secured funding to the tune of £275m, which will help them finally complete the construction of the Nou Mestalla, with an aim to move in by 2027. ‌ The news will have given locals hope that their dreams for the area can finally come true - and they can stop living under the eyesore that was supposed to be one of the world's largest stadiums, reports the Daily Star. "Everyone asks about it because it is so big and it is so ugly for the views," a local hotel receptionist said in November 2023. Another resident added: "Whatever it is, it is better to have it finished. A building for business, a building for sport, a building for partying, whatever. But it needs to be done... not that." The vast and towering Nou Mestalla stadium, originally set to accommodate 80,000 supporters and positioned on a former factory site, promised a surge in tourism for Benicalap's locals. Speaking of squandered dreams, one woman said: "My mother bought this cafe 15 years ago. She bought it for exactly that point, for the stadium. But we are waiting for them to start again, to have a great business. We are waiting, I hope they will start again. "This neighbourhood is not so rich. We try hard to pay our bills. We are a working family and we are working hard, but it is not easy," she added. ‌ Yet, the unfinished structure wasn't just a symbol of failed opportunities; for some, like a cheerful restaurant owner nearby, it held the thrill of being part of football history. He said: "When someone from outside comes, they always ask about it I am also a fan of football and I love to see something like that. "I know the story of this but I do not feel like it is unfinished. Fans of football, if they see the stadium, they are feeling something and I feel the same. It is my dream to be near the stadium, near all the players of Valencia and the World Cup and more." ‌ Like his neighbours, he is eager to seize the opportunities for the local area if it is completed. "If they make it, everything will be great," he added. "Money will come to the people and the businesses here. Fans of football will always be here, hopefully with the Champions League and World Cup, everyone will be here. It will be such a beautiful opportunity for the people here. I wish, I hope that they will do it." ‌ One resident - also a big football fan - did voice their concerns about the safety of the structure if they were to continue the project - and suggested that they might need to demolish it to utilise the site. He stated: "Engineering wise, it cannot be safe, so if they want to build, they will have to knock down the whole thing. It will take time and money. But when you remember the World Cup in Qatar, they did not have the stadiums but in six months, they build stadiums. They can do the same and that is what I wish for." ‌ It now looks like the residents will get their wish. The Nou Mestalla could also join a whole host of prestigious stadiums which will play host to the 2030 World Cup, which will take place across Spain, Portugal and Morocco A statement on the official Valencia website says: "Valencia CF has successfully secured the full financing for Nou Mestalla — the most significant non-sporting project in the Club's history. "Scheduled to open in 2027, Nou Mestalla will serve as a global benchmark for modern stadium developments. The modern state-of-the-art stadium will drive Valencia CF's growth and unlock new long-term sustainable revenue streams that will strengthen the Club's influence and competitiveness for decades to come. "Nou Mestalla is not just a transformative investment for Valencia CF - it will be a landmark and legacy project for the city and is set to become an iconic symbol for Valencia CF fans, benefiting the city of Valencia, its residents, and visitors." Oliver Tarvet vs Carlos Alcaraz: Score and latest updates from Wimbledon

Latest updates Will Conroy live updates 02 July 2025 3:59pm 3:59PM Tarvet 0-3 Alcaraz* Alcaraz comes to the net with effect at the start of his next service game to take the lead before crushing a 115mph forehand into the corner to make it 30-0. He follows up with an ace, that checks off the line and he nearly hits Tarvet in the head, and this looks more like it from the Spaniard. He does send a ground-stroke long on the next point, though, before failing to get an awkward volley over the net, and suddenly the pressure is back on the world No 2 at 40-30. And the pressure brings a double-fault... back to deuce on the Spaniard's serve. Tarvet catches the top of the net with a backhand, though, and lets out a cry of frustration. Advantage Alcaraz. The Briton looks to be dominating the next point with some superb ground-strokes, but he catches the net with another backhand and Alcaraz manages to hold once more. 3:54PM Tarvet* 0-2 Alcaraz Alcaraz can only send his first return of serve long but produces a superb cross-court forehand to level this next game at 15-15. Tarvet does well to reach another Alcaraz drop shot but pushes his get just inches long of the baseline. The Briton's next serve checks off the line, leaving Alcaraz off balance, meaning he sets up Tarvet for the winner but the next exchange ends with the amateur finding the net so Alcaraz has the early break. 3:49PM Tarvet 0-1 Alcaraz* (*denotes server) It's Alcaraz to serve first and he starts strongly, with a body serve returned long by the Briton. The second point involves a lengthier exchange and it finishes with Alcaraz sending a forehand long from the baseline. Tarvet's first point of the match and it is met with huge cheers from Centre Court. Tarvet sends another return of serve long but gets into the next rally and makes it 30-30, with Alcaraz finding the net with a backhand. Alcaraz sends another forehand long and Tarvet has a break point! His mother in the crowd attempts to hide a smile. The Spaniard whips a forehand into the corner, though, taking this first game to deuce and preventing an enormous cheer from the home fans. He pushes another forehand long, though, and once more the Briton has a break point. But a ground-stroke goes inches long and we are back at deuce. But would you believe it? A backhand passing shot from Alcaraz goes wide and he presents another break opportunity. But he saves it once more, with another fierce forehand winner. A delightful drop-shot sees Alcaraz go to the brink of this first game and he seals it with a superb volley at the net. What a start to this match! 3:40PM Here we go! We are just moments away from getting underway on Centre Court. Will Tarvet make his mark? 3:39PM Up next for the winner The winner this afternoon will be rewarded with a third-round clash against either Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jan-Lennard Struff. 3:37PM 'Play the ball, not the player' - Tarvet on second round approach Speaking ahead of this afternoon's match, Tarvet told BBC Sport: 'I don't really like the word 'experience' because I feel like then you're just there to almost just spectate; you don't really have the expectation to win. 'And, obviously, I'm not saying that I expect to win. But at the same time I feel like I've been quietly confident this whole tournament and it's got me to where I am. 'A big thing for me is just playing the ball, not the player.' 3:36PM Players out on Centre Court After being frantically told by a tournament official to 'wait, wait wait', Oliver Tarvet eventually leads Carlos Alcaraz out onto Centre Court for what must be a surreal experience. A reminder the Briton came through qualifying, is ranked 733rd in the world and is making his debut at a major tournament. Tarvet wins the toss and opts to receive first. 3:33PM Tarvet misses out on prize money By Tim Wigmore, Firona Parker and Tom McArdle Oliver Tarvet's amateur status combined with American college rules – the Briton is still a student at University of San Diego – means he can only receive a sliver of his guaranteed prize money. Any singles player reaching the second round at the All England Club is guaranteed £99,000 in prize money, with £153,000 up for grabs if he were to achieve the unthinkable and eclipse defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the second round on Wednesday. Yet Tarvet, who is studying for a communications major, will only be able to claim $10,000 (£7,290) in profit by the end of this year because of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's rules for student athletes. Read the full piece on the 21-year-old Briton here. 3:30PM Top seeds dropping out Despite his lacklustre performance on Monday, Alcaraz's chances of a third successive Wimbledon title appear to have improved, with four of the top 10 seeds losing in the opening round. Three of those casualties came on Alcaraz's side of the draw, with Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune all suffering first-round upsets. 3:26PM 'I need to improve' - Alcaraz on first-round performance Carlos Alcaraz took more than five hours to progress past 38-year-old Fabio Fognini in five sets in the opening round on Monday. Speaking afterwards, the Spaniard said: 'I tried my best but I can be better. I need to improve in the next round. 'Playing in such a high heat is really difficult to deal with and it is even tougher when you're playing long matches, long rallies. 'Part of the match you can feel down a little bit because of the sun hitting all the time. I have to be ready to battle.'
