KZN man sentenced to life for girlfriend's brutal murder

The Citizena day ago
The Vryheid Regional Court has sentenced a 51-year-old Mondlo man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, bringing justice in a case that sent shock waves through the local community.
According to Northern Natal News, Innocent Fanyane Dubazane was found guilty of killing 45-year-old Nonsikelelo Nqobile Xaba, whose body was discovered in a ditch in the C-section area of Mondlo on February 8, 2024. Xaba, who was well known in the community, was found wrapped in a duvet cover and shade netting. She had suffered severe blunt force trauma and was fully clothed but barefoot.
Although the couple had been in a romantic relationship, they had kept it hidden from their families. It later emerged that Xaba was last seen alive at Dubazane's home.
During police questioning, Dubazane made admissions that linked him to the murder. Investigators discovered the victim's blood-stained shoes hidden in a plastic bag in an outside toilet at Dubazane's home. Drag marks at the back of the house led to the spot where her body was found. Police confirmed that the duvet and netting used to conceal the body came from Dubazane's home and that of his brother, who shared the property.
The state, represented by prosecutor Andre Symington, presented compelling evidence from community witnesses, family members and police officers. Witnesses identified the victim's shoes and the duvet as belonging to her and the accused respectively. A relative also testified to having seen the couple together before the murder.
Symington highlighted the frequency of gender-based violence in South Africa during sentencing arguments, stressing that Dubazane showed no remorse and that the attack was both brutal and calculated.
The court found Dubazane and the deceased had been in a domestic relationship and ruled there were no compelling reasons to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence for femicide. As a result, Dubazane was sentenced to life imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
In response to the outcome, NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to fighting gender-based violence and femicide.
'There is no place in our society for perpetrators of such cruelty. We will continue to prioritise these cases and ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and decisively,' she said.
The sentence brings closure to a case that deeply affected the Mondlo community and stands as a strong warning to perpetrators of violence against women.

Ex-Police Minister Bheki Cele silent as criminal allegations mount

Former Police Minister Bheki Cele remains tight-lipped as the controversy and scandals surrounding allegations of his collusion between high-ranking law enforcement officials and criminal syndicates continue to grip the country. Image: Bongani Shilubane / Independent Newspapers Former Police Minister Bheki Cele remains tight-lipped as the controversy and scandals surrounding allegations of his collusion between high-ranking law enforcement officials and criminal syndicates continue to grip the country. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's explosive claims suggesting a disturbing nexus between law enforcement and organised crime. Mkhwanazi's allegations implicate several senior officials, including deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, in a web of corruption that threatens to undermine the integrity of South Africa's policing institutions. Adding fuel to the fire, Mkhwanazi accused certain law enforcement agencies of collaborating with criminal syndicates involved in drug trafficking, the murders of prominent figures, and political assassinations. He further alleged that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had refused to sign warrants for the arrest of top police officials and politicians linked to this sprawling criminal network, raising serious questions about the integrity of the country's justice system. Amid the turmoil, Bheki Cele has chosen to remain silent. When approached by IOL on Wednesday, Cele declined to comment on the allegations, asserting that 'the president is dealing with the matter' and that the public should await further developments. 'I won't say anything; the president is handling this,' Cele stated, refusing to be drawn into speculation. Asked whether he was concerned about his reputation or consulting legal counsel, Cele reiterated that only Ramaphosa could speak, emphasising the government's focus on managing the crisis. The allegations have prompted urgent investigations by parliamentary committees. On Wednesday, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza refused to allow a debate on Mkhwanazi's remarks but appointed three committees to conduct a swift inquiry into the security concerns raised. Meanwhile, Cele's recent activities continue to be under scrutiny. It was reported that he stayed in a luxury penthouse suite owned by controversial businessman Matlala just days before Matlala's company was awarded a R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) health services tender. According to media reports, the stay occurred at The Capital Menlyn Maine in Pretoria in January - a detail that raises eyebrows given Matlala's reputation and ongoing legal troubles, including attempted murder charges and links to corruption investigations. On Wednesday, Mchunu issued a statement denying any links to Matlala in response to the allegations. 'The Minister has never met Mr. Matlala, has never spoken to him, nor has the Minister ever requested or received anything from him. 'The Minister did, however, initiate a review of the SAPS tender awarded to him when suspicions of possible wrongdoing surfaced. It was the same tender that has since been terminated,' read the statement. General Sibiya, on Sunday, denied any links to organised crime, dismissing Mkhwanazi's claims.

Court grants bail to 4 accused in KZN rehab murder

Four men accused of murdering Luke Edwards (32), whose body was found near the Tetelestai Recovery Centre in Kingsburgh, KZN, in April, were yesterday granted bail of R2 000 each by the uMlazi Magistrate's Court. The Witness reports that in the dock were Lloyd Clive Ramsbottom (29), Banele Mseleku (24), Jean Pierre van Niekerk (28) and Njabulo Brandon Dlamini (28). They were working as volunteer mentors at the centre while also being patients. On hearing the bail ruling, Edwards' family and friends stood up and left the courtroom before the magistrate announced the postponement date. Investigating officer Kenneth Khanyase testified that Edwards, who was a patient at the recovery centre, was beaten over several hours with a crate. He said Edwards had been isolated, deprived of food and subjected to severe violence by the four. The state argued that bail could threaten witnesses' safety and that all four are flight risks as they are unemployed. The accused said they plan to plead not guilty and disputed any involvement in the murder. Van Niekerk and Ramsbottom both claimed ignorance of the fatal assault. Mseleku and Dlamini cited concerns over deteriorating mental and physical health as justification for bail, arguing prison conditions at Westville Prison, where they have been held, hindered their rehabilitation. During Khanyase's cross-examination, the defence questioned how he obtained the information that led to the arrest of the accused. He replied that it came from witnesses at Tetelestai Recovery Centre. The defence also questioned the credibility of the witnesses, saying they were not physically present when the assault happened but only saw Edwards and the accused together. The case was postponed to August 19 for further investigation. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak.
