BALTIMORE — Mark Vientos began the season regarded as a key Mets lineup piece, but his underwhelming production lately has left him on the bench.
Starling Marte's injured list stint should provide Vientos opportunities as the DH against lefty pitching, but otherwise it's just sit and wait.

'Especially when we are facing a lot of these righties, but the way [Ronny] Mauricio and [Brett] Baty have been playing … I talked to [Vientos], he's going to stay ready,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before Wednesday's game against the Orioles was postponed by weather. 'He's a big part of this team.'
Jesse Winker, who returned from the injured list on Tuesday, will receive most of the at-bats from the DH spot.
Vientos entered Tuesday's game as a pinch hitter and finished 0-for-2.

Since returning from the injured list he's 2-for-27 (.074).
Overall, Vientos owns a .210/.272/.341 slash line with six homers in 235 plate appearances this season.

Ed Kranepool holds the franchise record with 1,853 games played for the Mets.

Jayson Tatum sheds boot in encouraging Celtics rehab sign after Achilles tear
Jayson Tatum is making strides on his road to recovery. The Celtics star revealed on Instagram Sunday that he no longer has a boot on his right foot as he heals from the ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered during Game 4 of Boston's second-round series against the Knicks on May 12. Tatum underwent surgery about 18 hours after the gruesome injury, and he has been rehabbing throughout the summer. Jayson Tatum posted an Instagram story Sunday of himself without a boot on his right foot. @jaytatum0/Instagram Before posting his update on Instagram, he was last seen working out with the Chattanooga men's basketball team at the program's facility on Friday. The Celtics have not offered a timetable on Tatum's return, but the 27-year-old is widely expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 season. 'He seems to be doing really well. Rehabbing's hard. Anyone who's been through a long injury and a long recovery, it's just a challenge,' Celtics president Brad Stevens said on the broadcast of Boston's July 13 Summer League game. 'Mental challenge, physical challenge, obviously. But he got the surgery right away, and from that point on, his mindset was, 'We're going after this thing and trying to get better.' Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the Celtics' second-round series against the Knicks. AP 'He's a competitor. He's gonna compete in everything he does, including rehab. I'm really encouraged. I've basically seen him every day in Boston for the last 50 days. Usually, he goes away at the end of the season and then comes back, but he's just stayed there and been doing his rehab. It's been fun to spend time with him every day and just try to catch up and see how he's doing as we watch him make the strides he needs to make.' Tatum, a five-time All-NBA honoree, averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists last season. When he makes his return, he'll join a new-look Celtics team that no longer features Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, but has new additions in Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang.

Caitlin Clark not expected to play when Indiana Fever resume season Tuesday at New York
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Caitlin Clark is not expected to be available on Tuesday night when Indiana resumes its season at the defending champion New York Liberty, Fever coach Stephanie White said. Clark missed Indiana's final game before the All-Star break with an injured right groin and pulled out of Friday night's 3-point contest as well as Saturday's All-Star Game. Clark told reporters on Saturday night that she had been getting treatment during the festivities, which also took place in Indianapolis. She was injured in the final minute of Tuesday's victory at Connecticut. While she is improving, White said, the Fever intend to be cautious with Clark, who missed 10 games during the first half of the season with three different muscle injuries. 'She's going to see some doctors and get more tests early in the week,' White said. 'I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday, so we're just going to take it one day at a time and let her get evaluations early this week and then, once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear vision of what it looks like.' Clark never missed a game because of injury during her college career at Iowa or last season when she was selected the WNBA's Rookie of the Year. The two-time All-Star is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds this season for a team that was expected to contend for a league championship. But Clark's injuries and other obstacles have kept the Fever hovering near the middle of the standings with a 12-11 mark. 'These soft tissue injuries, sometimes nag until you can actually have time to really allow to heal in the offseason,' White said. ___ AP WNBA:

Skubal twirls gem and Vierling lifts Tigers over Rangers 2-1 to stop 6-game slide
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Sunday night. Vierling's base hit up the middle off Chris Martin (1-6) scored Gleyber Torres after the Rangers finally got something going against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the seventh. Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in last Tuesday's All-Star Game, was cruising with a two-hit shutout heading into the seventh. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton (5-3). Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs for his 16th save. Skubal struck out 11 and walked none on 105 pitches in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. Zach McKinstry singled home Wenceel Pérez in the second for Detroit's first run. Texas left-hander Jacob Latz allowed six hits and two walks over five innings in his third start this year and the fourth of his 72 big league appearances. Latz pitched in place of Nathan Eovaldi, who reported back tightness Saturday. Corey Seager, the lone left-handed batter in the starting lineup against the left-handed Skubal, had the first two hits off him. Seager extended his on-base streak to 21 games, the longest active run in the American League. Key moment Vierling singled on a full-count fastball in the eighth to give Detroit a 2-1 lead. Key stat The Tigers had nine hits after totaling seven while losing the first two games of the series. Up next Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (5-9, 4.65 ERA) seeks his first win since June 8 on Monday at Pittsburgh against NL All-Star Game starter Paul Skenes (4-8, 2.01). Rangers rookie RHP Jack Leiter (5-6, 4.37) faces Athletics LHP Jacob Lopez (3-5, 4.20) at home on Monday. ___ AP MLB:
