Haunting, Powerful New Historical Fiction
The title of Daanje's THE REMEMBERED SOLDIER (New Vessel, 562 pp., paperback, $22.95) is loaded with tragic irony. Translated from the Dutch by David McKay, this provocatively labyrinthine novel dissects the consciousness of an amnesiac veteran of World War I who has spent four years in a Belgian asylum only to be retrieved by a woman who insists she is his wife. Against the advice of the friars who have been his custodians, she installs him in her modest apartment, introduces him to their two children and uses her account of his miraculous return to save the nearly bankrupt photography business she has somehow kept going in his absence.
Yet the stories she tells him about their past aren't entirely convincing. Can he trust her? Can he trust himself? Trying to maneuver through a maze of strange new possibilities, he continues to harbor deep doubts and even deeper fears. Is she hiding something from him? Has his mind shut down because of something awful he has done? As interludes of unexpected contentment yield to frightening blackouts, his mental lapses become increasingly frequent and violent, haunted by glimpses of other people and places. Are they hallucinations or are they real memories? This marriage, he comes to realize, 'is built on quicksand, one false step and they'll drown together.'
Florenzer
Leonardo da Vinci is the quintessential Renaissance man, famed for his confident, wide-ranging intellect. Yet in FLORENZER (Liveright, 350 pp., $29.99), Melanson introduces us to a teenage Leonardo still struggling to find himself amid the roiling artistic and political atmosphere of late-15th-century Florence. A talented but feckless apprentice in the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio, he must learn how to navigate a city where everything seems to be 'a game of pretend.'
For a young man sexually attracted to other young men, this can be particularly dangerous, landing him in prison if he's denounced by a note in one of the boxes kept in church for this very purpose. Yet his work may be his salvation, and for that Melanson provides an intersecting narrative focused on another youthful Florentine. A very different sort of striver, Lorenzo de' Medici operates in a sphere that intermittently overlaps with Leonardo's, as does that of Francesco Salviati, an illegitimate scion of a rival banking family who hopes to rise in the Roman Catholic hierarchy. The lives of all three will be changed by the violence that is soon to erupt in what should have been a holy sanctuary. In Florence, apparently nothing is sacred.

Rebecca Loos shares 'special' details about David Beckham alleged 'affair' on Celebrity SAS
David Beckham's ex-PA has addressed the scandal on the Channel 4 reality show. Rebecca Loos has addressed the David Beckham "affair" scandal in scenes set to air on Celebrity SAS as she admitted: "He always made me feel very special." The former personal assistant (PA), 48, is starring on Channel 4's toughest reality show, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. It's a step back into public life after she shied away from it. It's been more than 20 years since Loos sold her story in 2004 to the now-defunct newspaper News of the World, claiming she had an affair with the footballer who is married to Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham; the Beckhams have always denied the claims. Now Loos' life looks totally different: she's moved to Norway, works as a yoga teacher and has children of her own. Her peace and quiet was disturbed when Beckham and his wife Victoria spoke about the impact the scandal had on their marriage in their Netflix docuseries in 2023. It isn't long before Loos brings up the Beckham situation on Celebrity SAS as seen in scenes on Sunday. "I wouldn't say the British press have been kind in how they have portrayed me because of the Beckham situation," she told the cameras for Celebrity SAS. "I have been accused of being a liar, a slut, a sleazy senorita but I'm not used to being shouted at by bulky men so that's new for me!" After failing the first task, Loos faces a grilling from the Directing Staff where she talks about the scandal. The yoga teacher said she has no regrets. "Lessons learned," she said, alluding to the Beckham scenario. "If I went back in time of course [I'd do things differently]." Rebecca Loos speaks about David Beckham scandal Asked how she felt about it, she reveals: "I was his PA, personal assistant. He always made me feel very special. But it was no big deal, I still did my job. I didn't fancy him that much in the beginning anyway. On the first night I was with him, I said to him, 'You must do this all the time'. "I thought I was a little bit of fun for him. He said to me, 'No I've never done this before.' He could have said, 'Yeah I've had loads of girls. I'm just having some fun.' Fine by me, I know where I'm going in." Loos says she didn't expect anything. "The fact that he lied to me the whole time, that p***ed me off," she says. The former PA explains why she gave that tell-all interview to the News of the World. She says: "I was unhappy with the way I had been treated. So I didn't want to go around anymore, carrying this secret. Rumours that were spreading, journalists were getting in touch, in the end I decided it was better it comes from me. So I gave an interview, thinking it would be something and it ended up being something else. I spent a few years trying to see if I can get it back." Beckham's ex-PA went through 'hell' With time to reflect on her own, Loos claims it was unfair Beckham's life flourished while she went through "hell". She says: "I do look back at who i was in my 20s and the only ever focus is on the f***ing beckham situation. It felt injust [unjust] that my life was pretty hell and his career and his life kept blossoming. That didn't feel quite right, still doesn't. I think I've taken most of the blame for what happened, rightly so it was part of my life. We were two. He was older of me and he was my boss." She adds: "You can't change the things that happened is my attitude. I roll my sleeves and get on with it. Everything I have experienced has brought me to where I am today. It's made me a little bit stronger." Why is Rebecca Loos speaking out now? The Netflix documentary Beckham seems to be the driving factor behind her speaking out on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. She says: "When the Beckham documentary [Netflix's Beckham] came out, I was taken completely by surprise. Him trying to portray an image of perfection that was nothing like reality… "The way our relationship was spoken about and the fact that no responsibility for his actions was reignited. It was like reliving 2004 all over again except this time we have the added dynamic of social media." What have the Beckhams said? In 2023, the Beckhams spoke about the scandal on their Netflix docuseries. They have always denied the affair. Speaking openly about it for the first time, they shared the "hurt" and the impact the headlines had on their marriage. Mrs Beckham said: "It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us. Here's the thing — we were against each other if I'm being completely honest. You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. "But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel like we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare. It was an absolute circus — and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town right? Unless you're in it." Her husband added: "Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we're fighters, and at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family, but it was worth fighting for. Ultimately it is our private life." Yahoo UK has reached out to David Beckham and Victoria Beckham's representatives for further comment. Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins will return to our screens on Channel 4 at 9pm on August 3.

GH Spoilers August 4: Anna and Obrecht Reunite, Chase and Gio Talk
Key Takeaways: Anna and Liesl Obrecht encounter one another, with their history and Britt's disappearance potentially coming up. Chase runs into Gio and might try to convince him to give Brook Lynn a chance. Ric meets Molly for dinner, but keeps many secrets from her, including how her sister tampered with his car. Ava makes a proposal, likely to Alexis, which may be related to the Cassadine trust and Kristina's scheme. In addition to Anna encountering Obrecht, General Hospital spoilers for Monday, August 4, 2025, will also focus on Chase running into Gio and Ava making a proposal. Next on General Hospital Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) recently gave Anna (Finola Hughes) a heads-up that Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) was back in town. The doctor returned to connect with Rocco (Finn Carr), who needed to know about Britt (Kelly Thiebaud). She was more than happy to share stories and information about his birth. When Anna encounters Obrecht on Monday, how will their reunion go? Their history is complicated, but they're mostly in a better place. They both went raging a few years ago, after all. However, Anna knows what Obrecht is capable of, so this interaction could go a hundred different ways. Anna also knows about Jason's gut feeling that Britt is alive, so their conversation may veer that way. Meanwhile, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Britt is somehow involved with Dalton's research, and she's injecting herself with mysterious concoctions. Personally, you can tell she's lonely. She doesn't have her mother by her side. What happens when Britt is suddenly taken aback? It's not too soon for Jason to catch up to her, right? READ THIS: Here's what else is happening next week on GH. Unexpected Conversation Meanwhile, Dante has been able to talk to Gio (Giovanni Mazza) a couple of times since the big reveal. Those interactions were unsuccessful but not disastrous. Brook Lynn, on the other hand, hasn't had much face time with her biological son. But the last time they were in the same vicinity, it didn't go well. Things could start looking up because Chase (Josh Swickard) is about to run into Gio. Faced with this sudden opportunity, Brook Lynn's hubby could start making a case for Gio to give Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) a chance. There's a lot that Ric knows that his daughter does not. Like how her sister cut the brakes on his car, resulting in the accident that sent him and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) to the hospital. He's also blackmailing Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) because of Kristina's bad choices. The father/daughter duo will probably have to stick to topics like the law and how Cody (Josh Kelly) isn't the man that Molly thought he was. What will happen when the ADA finds out that everybody in her life is lying to her? WATCH THIS: SoapHub Says spills the hottest soap tea! Finally, Ava (Maura West) makes a proposal. At Drew's (Cameron Mathison) and Willow's (Katelyn MacMullen) doomed wedding, Ava warned Alexis that she needed to talk to her. So, this proposal has to be about that. Ava may be playing into Kristina's hands if this is about striking a separate deal with Alexis regarding the money she has been embezzling from the Cassadine trust. This could be a move that tells Alexis and Kristina (Kate Mansi) that Kristina's plan is working. Solve the daily Crossword

Cardi B Claims She Threw Speaker At Rah Ali During Cannes Airport Argument, Rah Reacts
Cardi B claims that she and fellow Love & Hip Hop alum Rah Ali recently got into a heated exchange at the airport in Cannes, France, with Rah saying things didn't go down exactly as the Bronx rapper described. The 'Outside' artist shared the story during an X Spaces session late Thursday (July 31), where she described running into Ali and knowing she would have to get her lick back for their altercation during the 2018 Harper's BAZAAR ICONS Party, which Ali attended with friend, Nicki Minaj. 'I know that I'm grown and that I shouldn't have that mentality, but let's be f**king for real,' Cardi explained, saying Ali would've publicly deemed her a coward if she said nothing, going on to describe the night the former reality star allegedly hit her while she was held back by Minaj's security. 'Your friend's security and you attacked me…the security grabbed me and you attacked me, and if you thought I was gonna let that sh*t fly, you outta your f**king mind.' 'I can't live and die knowing that somebody did put they hands on me and I never did nothing back,' she said. 'Bi**h, I'm from the Bronx, you from the Bronx. You know what's up.' Cardi goes on to claim that Rah Ali stared her down while in the airport, resulting in Cardi starting an argument. When Ali dismissed the rapper, telling her to 'grow up,' Cardi claims she then threw a JBL portable speaker at Ali's head. Hear Cardi explain it all below. The confession followed Ali's description of events earlier that day, admitting that they did get into an argument, but claiming that Cardi threw shoes and bags at her, not a speaker. Ali doubled-down on this after Cardi made her claims. 'I will always be ready to protect myself at all cost, however at this stage in my life I'm not interested in making poor choices,' she wrote on X. 'Anything and everything I execute is thoroughly calculated. With that being said, had anyone in this whole world hit ME in my head with a speaker, you in fact would be viewing footage of me in handcuffs. I promise to God that did not happen.' She concluded, 'If it makes her feel better, I encourage you all to support that version. Mentally I can handle it, I don't mind. I will NOT be on this app acting a fool.' See her posts below. Following the original incident, Nicki Minaj described the fight between Rah and Cardi on Queen Radio, saying, 'Rah [Ali] really, really beat Cardi's ass bad. Like really bad. … The hardest punches you've ever heard in your life.'
