Surrey dominate Durham, Thunder beat Bears

BBC News08-06-2025
Surrey continue to set the pace in the women's T20 Blast as punishing batting by England's Danni Wyatt-Hodge ushered them to a comfortable nine-wicket win over Durham at The Oval. After restricting the visitors to 141-5, they made it four wins out of four by reaching 143-1 with 43 balls to spare, Wyatt-Hodge hitting the winning boundary to finish with 74 not out from just 36 balls. In Sunday's other game, Lancashire Thunder picked up only their second win in five matches as Tara Norris made an unbeaten 33 and took 3-25 to help them beat Bears by five runs.Chasing a target of 163, the home side needed 14 off the final over at Edgbaston, but could only muster eight, with Natasha Wraith finishing on 57 not out from 36 deliveries, the highest score of the match. Match scorecards
The game against Surrey began badly for Durham, who saw both openers bowled inside the first five overs - Suzie Bates and Mady Villiers both dismissed by Ryana MacDonald-Gay.From 29-3, Hollie Armitage led a revival, adding 40 with Bess Heath (27) and 38 with Mia Rogers, and although she went to 50 off 49 balls in the last over and Katherine Fraser hit the final ball of the innings for six, their score did not look enough. So it proved as Wyatt-Hodge and Bryony Smith matched each other shot for shot in bringing up a 50 partnership in the fourth over.Wyatt-Hodge launched Katie Levick over mid-wicket for a maximum, the first of two sixes in her innings to go with 11 fours, but the stand came to an end on 94 when Smith was caught in the deep off Phoebe Turner for 44 from 28 balls.Replacement Kira Chathli opened her account with a six and made an unbeaten 19 from 13 before Wyatt-Hodge ended the game by cutting Bates to the point boundary.
Bears come up short despite Wraith knock
Emma Lamb was back in the Lancashire side against the Bears following England duty but it was not a happy return as she was bowled through the gate for five by Issy Wong in the first over. They struggled to 31-4, batting in a steady drizzle, before a 69-run partnership between Ailsa Lister and Australian Alana King which ended when the former was lbw for 36 as she tried to sweep Hannah Baker.King made 21 before hitting Millie Taylor (2-25) to deep mid-wicket but Norris lofted a six over mid-off as she steered Thunder to 162-7.Bears made a positive start in reply as Davina Perrin made a rapid 34 before being bowled by one from Grace Johnson which kept low.Charis Pavely contributed 27 but they were losing momentum at 101-6 in the 14th over when Wong was bowled by Norris as she tried to make room to force the ball through the off side.Wraith, though, kept them in the game, clearing the ropes and hitting four fours as she reached 50 from just 29 balls, but wickets continued to fall at the other end and she lost the strike midway through the last over as Thunder squeezed home. "We have had a couple of tough ones in the last couple of games, so to get a win on the board is brilliant and we are right back in the mixer," Lancashire skipper Ellie Threlkeld said.

Liverpool set to sign Hugo Ekitike after Alexander Isak snub

Liverpool have agreed a £69m deal with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign striker Hugo Ekitike. The transfer fee could rise to £79m with add-ons, making Ekitike Liverpool's fourth summer signing; Liverpool were briefly interested in signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The French forward is set to undergo a medical and sign a six-year contract, with personal terms not expected to be an issue. Ekitike, 23, scored 22 goals last season, including 15 in the Bundesliga, and preferred Liverpool over Newcastle. This acquisition will push Liverpool's summer spending towards the £250m mark, following other significant signings.

Win in India decider would be 'shift' for England

Winning Tuesday's one-day series decider against India would help "shift" the narrative around the England women's team, says all-rounder Charlie levelled the three-match series with victory in a rain-shortened match at Lord's on Saturday, leaving the contest tied at 1-1 going into the final match at Chester-le-Street on their Ashes hammering by Australia in the winter, England won all six matches against West Indies at the start of the summer but were well beaten by India in the T20 series which followed."Losing the T20 series and the first game of the 50-over, it would feel like a bit of a shift," Dean said."To be able to pull that off would be something really special and would give a lot of girls a lot of confidence going to India." Tuesday is England's last official fixture in the 50-over format before their World Cup campaign begins on 3 October against South Africa in India.A regular criticism of England of recent years has been their ability to win bilateral series outside of World Cups, only to lose pressure matches at the major lost to South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2023 T20 World Cup and exited last year's event at the group stage after crumbling in a winner-takes-all match against West decider will be as close as possible to such moments outside of the global events."We have seen bilateral series where done really but when come to the World Cup games or tournament cricket we have not had the momentum or been clinical in those pressure moments," Dean said."Any chance we can emulate that in bilateral series is perfect practice."Obviously we want to win, but even if we don't we can take those learnings, keep getting better and set ourselves up to have a good 50-over competition. That is the most important."No matter how the game goes tomorrow that we really reflect and learn from the situation."

England vs Italy betting tips: Euro 2025 semi-final prediction and bet builder

England take on Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2025 on Tuesday night, with the Lionesses looking to book back-to-back European Championship finals. England came through a dramatic penalty shootout win over Sweden to take their place in the last four, with Lucy Bronze and Hannah Hampton among the heroines as they overcame a 2-0 deficit from the first half. But Sarina Wiegman will know that her side needs to be far better if they're going to have any hope of winning the competition, and that starts on Tuesday against Italy. Though the Italians – who scraped through against Norway with a 90th-minute winner – are not quite as accomplished a side as Sweden, the Lionesses will be wary of underestimating them, with the Azzurre playing their first semi-final in this competition just three years after turning professional. Nevertheless, it is England who are the favourites to go through in Geneva, with football betting sites offering Women's Euros odds of 1/4 for the Lionesses to qualify versus 11/4 for the Italians. England vs Italy prediction: Lionesses to make the final Though the Lionesses are firm favourites ahead of the semi-final, they will be wary of the Italians, who will be playing their first semi-final in this tournament for 28 years. In fact, the country's national federation only approved professional status for their players in 2022, with this semi-final marking the next step in a remarkable rise for the Azzurre. Though they will be understandably fired up, the fact remains that the squad doesn't possess the same level of talent as that of the Lionesses, as shown in the draw with Portugal and narrow win over Belgium. But while England should certainly qualify for the final, they are unlikely to have it all their own way, as shown against Sweden. The Lionesses have conceded goals in all but one of their matches at the tournament so far, with the goals against Wales and Sweden particularly worrying from a defensive point of view. It is perhaps unlikely that England will make as slow a start as they did in the quarter-final, but Italy could well capitalise if they do. Their own recent draw with Sweden in May – despite a squad with less talent than the Swedish – shows that they can punch above their weight. To that end, we're going with a wager on England to win but both teams to score, which is offered at 11/5 with various betting sites. England vs Italy tips: Russo to play key role in semi-final Though Alessia Russo has emerged as England's key goalscoring threat, her performances against the Netherlands and Wales illustrated why she has become such a key member of Wiegman's side, with the Arsenal striker proving an irreplaceable number nine with her hold-up and link play. Though Russo was unable to score against Sweden, she frequently played a part in England's most promising attacking moves and subsequently dispatched her penalty in the shootout. Though the 26-year-old has scored just one goal so far in the tournament (against Wales) she has registered three assists and could get more opportunities against the Azzurre, and perhaps this is her moment to steal the headlines once again, as she did at this stage in 2022 with that memorable backheel. With that in mind, we're going for Russo to score or assist against Italy, which is offered at 4/5 with William Hill. England vs Italy Bet Builder Tips We've pulled together an England vs Italy bet builder using the above predictions. When combined on one slip it pays out at 16/5 with Bet365. Leg 1: England to win Despite some nervy moments against Sweden, England's overall quality should give them the edge again in Geneva. They've reached this stage for a reason and are strong favourites to book a second straight Euros final. Leg 2: Both teams to score England have conceded in three of their four games at Euro 2025, while Italy have found the net in every match so far. With both teams likely to create chances, BTTS looks a solid inclusion. Leg 3: Alessia Russo to score or assist Russo has been central to England's attacking play all tournament. Her strength in link-up play and presence in the box gives her every chance of registering a goal or assist in this semi-final clash.
