Old Town festival to celebrate St George and Roman heritage in Leicester

BBC News19-04-2025
A free two-day festival is set to take place in Leicester to celebrate both St George's Day and the city's Roman heritage. A large replica Roman forum will be constructed and disassembled in Jubilee Square in the space of 48 hours during the Old Town Festival on 26 and 27 April. Visitors will also have the chance to encounter a fire breathing dragon, learn about the archaeology of Roman Leicester and meet costumed characters including knights, jesters, wizards and centurions. Events will take place at Leicester Cathedral, the Cathedral Gardens and Leicester Guildhall as well as Jubilee Square between 10:00 BST and 17:00 on both days.
The construction of the forum will be led by artist Olivier Grossetête, who specialises in large-scale constructions using only cardboard and sticky tape. Participants will start by creating key elements of the structure, such as arches and balconies, before working as a team to join the pieces together.
Organisers have said St George and the Roman empire are more linked than many people might expect. "St George was likely a Roman soldier from 3rd Century Cappadocia, now Turkey," a spokesperson said. "His bravery inspired legends, especially the famous tale of him slaying a dragon. While the story is likely symbolic, St George is still seen as a hero of faith and courage. "He became the patron saint of England and many other places and his red cross on a white background remains a national symbol today."The event has been organised by Leicester City Council alongside BID Leicester, Global Streets, Arts Council England, Highcross Leicester, Haymarket Shopping Centre and Hidden Histories.

Frankie Bridge's ‘sensational' pinstripe co-ord nails summer officewear

Frankie Bridge just gave the butter yellow an update with her 'sensational' lime green waistcoat and trouser set, and it's still available to shop if you know where to look Few people know how to nail the art of being both on trend and timeless at the same time quite like Frankie Bridge does. The presenter is known for her eternally chic outfits, which strike just the right balance of hitting a trend whilst still being wearable for years to come, and her latest co-ord is no exception. Frankie shared a snap of herself wearing Mango's Striped Straight Suit Trousers (£45.99) and the matching Buttons Striped Top (£35.99) on Instagram, and fans immediately went wild for it. 'So many sensational outfits, my style icon' wrote one, whilst another said: 'Absolutely love this outfit!' Currently the trousers are still available in all sizes from a six to a 14, however the stripe top is now out of stock on the Mango website. Don't despair, though, because our fashion sleuthing skills have tracked it down at Very, where it's still available in sizes small, medium and large. The pinstripe co-ord is the perfect choice for summer, and you can wear it absolutely anywhere from a summer wedding to the office to brunch. A simple accessory swap will take it from day to night, and its fitted, tailored silhouette gives it an instantly sophisticated, smart look. Its linen blend material also keeps it breathable and comfortable in the summer heat, but as it's not pure linen you won't need to worry as much about creasing and crumpling. We're also a big fan of the lime green shade, which has a punchier, bolder impact than the butter yellow trend, and is more universally flattering on all skin tones. The Striped Straight Suit Trousers have a relaxed, wide leg fit with tailored darts around the waist, whilst the waistcoat-style Buttons Striped Top has an adjustable tie at the back to cinch in the waist for a flattering fit. The top also flares out over the hips, helping accentuate your figure and creating an hourglass silhouette. We also spotted some other great alternatives on the high street, with Roman's Lime Dusk Waist Coat (£32) and Elasticated Waist Wide Leg Trouser (£35) offering a similar silhouette with a slightly more relaxed, causal fit. For a slightly more elegant look, ASOS' Premium Ponte Halter Neck Top (£26) and the matching Premium Ponte Barrel Leg Trouser (£30) have a tailored design that's perfect for evenings out. However if you want to copy Frankie's 'sensational' co-ord, you can bag the Striped Straight Suit Trousers directly from Mango, and the Buttons Striped Top at Very now.

‘This multitasking linen dress is the only one I packed on holiday – and it's on sale'

I've just returned from a city break for which I had to pack light, and this flattering linen mini dress was the most versatile item I packed – and it currently has 39% off Knowing what clothes to pack on a summer city break can be tricky, especially if you're limited on suitcase space; you want items to be practical yet look nice, suitable for hot weather yet also city streets, and possibly see you through long days of exploring. Luckily, I think I've found just the item: a cooling linen dress that looks great and works hard. On a recent three-day trip to Barcelona, the only dress I brought with me with this Linen A-Line Dress from & Other Stories. Simple yet flattering, it features a round neck, slightly dropped arm holes and is mid-thigh in length, and looks great with both flat sandals and heels (and even trainers). This made it the perfect outfit for me for both day and night. It's available in black and white, and is currently on sale on the H&M website, down from £77 to £47 for the black version and £57 for the white (which I'm seriously tempted to buy too). I really love the shape; its high neck and slightly dropped arms give it a more flattering silhouette that a basic shift dress. Thanks to its A-line shape, if also doesn't cling to sweaty legs. Because it's fully lined, I don't wear a bra with it as I think the straps would show slightly; if you wanted something similar that hides bra straps better, & Other Stories also sells this linen dress with a slightly different shape. Although linen will always crease, because my & Other Stories dress is black and lined, the creases aren't obvious (I certainly didn't bother steaming or ironing it in 30 degree heat). I wore it during the day with my trusty Birkenstock Arizonas walking around the city, where we averaged about 20,000 steps every day, then changed to daintier-looking black Havaiana flip-flops for the evening. For me it's the perfect summer city dress. If you're after some alternatives, Nobody's Child does some excellent linen-blend summer dresses. We love the flattering waist tie on the Lottie, £69, while the Cora, £89, is a pretty midi dress option. For something more colourful or boldly printed, try Roman. This belted shirt dress, £39, would be great for holidays or the office, while this printed shift dress, £42, would also work well as a beach cover-up (and the green version is currently reduced to £32).

BBC period drama hailed as 'one of the best ever' with 'magical' storylines

The BBC series, which stars Derek Jacobi, is told from the perspective of Roman Emperor Claudius - who is also the narrator of the series Consistently ranking on various 'greatest shows of all time' lists, I, Claudius is a 1976 BBC rendition of Robert Graves' identically titled 1934 novel and its 1935 follow-up, Claudius the God. ‌ With a screenplay written by Jack Pulman, I, Claudius showcases a remarkable ensemble cast, spearheaded by Derek Jacobi as Claudius, accompanied by renowned actors such as John Rhys-Davies, Patricia Quinn, Patrick Stewart, Margaret Tyzack, Kevin McNally, Siân Phillips, Ian Ogilvy, Brian Blessed, George Baker, and John Hurt. ‌ As told from the perspective of Roman Emperor Claudius - who also narrates the series - this 13-part period drama unravels the intricate history of the early Roman Empire, delving into its characteristic themes of power, deception, assassination, forbidden love, desire, and moral decay. ‌ The show won three BAFTA Awards in 1977, and in 1978, Tim Harvey claimed a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction. Featured at number 12 on the British Film Institute's 2000 list of '100 Greatest British Television Programmes', it also secured a spot on TIME Magazine's 2007 list of "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME". Widely regarded as one of British television's most iconic series, as well as a groundbreaking show in the broader context of TV history, I, Claudius has garnered 100% critical acclaim and an impressive 92% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reports the Express. One critic praised the show, saying: "It's amazing. Gripping, dark, complex, compulsive." ‌ I, Claudius is a testament to exceptional television production, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Another critic gushed over the recent addition to Masterpiece Theater, admitting: "Though it may actually defy basic properties and capabilities of the medium, this latest import to march under the Masterpiece Theater banner proves immensely, compulsively watchable. It's so good it's a little embarrassing." Praises continued as another reviewer celebrated the series, remarking: "It's one of those magical rare TV classics that is forever-fresh no matter how many times you've seen its often fanciful depiction of the lust and brutality of ancient Rome." ‌ The accolades didn't stop there, with another expert in the field pronouncing: "May be the most addictive soap opera ever made. Certainly the best-acted." Fans also weighed in, with one declaring their admiration for the show: "One of the best TV series of all time. See it for the dialogue and the terrific performances. The acting overwhelms the lack of production values and risible makeup. In my opinion, Sian Phillips and Derek Jacoby deliver the best acting performances of all time." Echoing similar sentiments, another enthusiast shared their deep connection with both the series and the original novels: "The cast, the writing, the uneasiness and poison that runs throughout the show cannot be missed by anyone. The book(s) have since become some of my favourite novels and I recommend this show to almost everyone who I become close with. 10/10 TV, almost the best of all time." A viewer hailed the series as a 'masterpiece' and remarked: "Possibly the best show ever made, certainly in terms of script and acting, which are of the highest level you will ever see on TV. Sian Phillips, Brian Blessed, Derek Jacobi, John Hurt, Patrick Stewart.... all in the same show! (Though all the other actors are incredible too). A masterpiece and a masterclass. This is how it's done." Meanwhile, fans of the classic can bag episodes of Claudius on Amazon Prime Video for £1.89 each or head over to YouTube where they're up for £1.99 a pop.
