Constitution under siege, BJP doing ideological coup to replace republic with theocratic state: Sonia
She alleged that the BJP is seeking to bring an 'ideological coup' by replacing our democratic republic with a theocratic corporate state serving the powerful few.
In her special message read out at the day-long national legal conclave on 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives and Pathways', Ms. Gandhi said the Congress would oppose every attempt to undermine the Constitution in Parliament, in courts and on the streets, asserting that it is not just a political but an ideological commitment to defend every Indian's dignity.
'Today, the Constitution is under siege. The BJP-RSS, which never fought for freedom or upheld equality, now uses its power to dismantle the very framework it long opposed,' she said.
'Their ideological forebears glorified Manusmriti, rejected the tricolour, and envisioned a Hindu rashtra, where democracy is hollow and discrimination is the law. In power, they've eroded institutions, criminalised dissent, targeted minorities and betrayed Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs and the working poor.
'Now they seek to erase socialism and secularism, pillars of Ambedkar's vision of equal citizenship. This is not reform, but an ideological coup replacing our democratic republic with a theocratic corporate state serving the powerful few,' the former Congress chief alleged.
She stressed that India yearns for the inclusive, just and democratic nation envisaged by our freedom fighters and Constitution makers.
'That is what the Congress party stands and fights for. We will oppose every attempt to undermine the Constitution, in Parliament, in courts, and on the streets. This is not just political, it is our ideological commitment to defend every Indian's dignity. I commend Abhishek Manu Singhvi and his team for reigniting this vital conversation. Our mission is clear - to reclaim the republic and protect the rights of each and every person,' she said in her message.
Ms. Gandhi said the Constitution is more than a legal charter and claimed that it is the moral foundation of our democracy, built on justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Noting that the Constitution was shaped through the sacrifices and vision of the Indian National Congress, she said even before independence, the Congress imagined a constitution, 'by Indians, for Indians'.
From the Nehru Report in 1928 to the demand for a Constituent Assembly in 1934, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru laid the groundwork and B.R. Ambedkar, as chairman of the Drafting Committee, gave form to these ideals. 'He warned that without social and economic justice, political democracy would be just a top dressing,' she said.
'The Congress recognised this and acted on it, expanding rights, strengthening institutions, and upholding dignity and inclusion,' she said.

Kolkata man found dead, family says he ended life fearing NRC deportation
The family of a 63-year-old man who was found dead in his Kolkata residence Sunday alleged that he died by suicide since he was living in fear of being deported to Bangladesh under the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), police said. A suicide note purportedly written by the victim, Dilip Kumar Saha, an Indian citizen, was found from the spot, police said. Saha, who reportedly moved to Kolkata from Nawabganj in Dhaka in 1972, was found hanging in his room in the Anandapally West area of Regent Park. Police said Saha's wife Arati Saha, and another relative broke into the room after he did not respond to their repeated calls. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Arati claimed that her husband was under mental stress as he feared being sent to a detention camp and eventually deported to Bangladesh even as he possessed valid voter ID and other documents. Saha worked as a non-teaching staffer at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The matter is under investigation, police said. Meanwhile, local TMC MLA and Power Minister Arup Biswas, who visited the family, said, 'This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you.' Later in the day, the TMC held a press meet, with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh holding the BJP-led Centre responsible for Saha's death. Ghosh accused the Centre of creating 'an atmosphere of terror' that is causing 'valid Indians' to fear for their lives, especially those who may struggle to produce their parents' documents. Education Minister Bratya Basu also condemned the incident, calling the BJP's 'insulting and harassing' notices to Hindu Bengalis regarding the NRC. 'The way in which the BJP has been sending NRC notices to Hindu Bengalis, is to insult and harass them. Not being able to tolerate this, Dilip Kumar Saha has ended his life. His wife, Aarti has said this. Migrant workers are being called infiltrators. In Pune, a man who fought in the Kargil war was called the same,' Basu said. -with PTI inputs

RSS leader for probe to find ‘real culprits' of Malegaon blast
1 2 3 Nagpur: Now, as all the accused in Malegaon blast have been acquitted, it is on the govt's probe agencies to investigate the truth and find out the real perpetrators, said national executive member of RSS, Suresh (Bhaiyyaji) Joshi, on Sunday. Joshi, former Sarkaryavaha (genereal secretary) of RSS, spoke with TOI on the sidelines of a function organised by Dharampeth Education Society. "It's a fact that the blast took place. So, an investigation has to take place to know who did it." Replying to a question, he confirmed that the acquitted persons were framed as part of a conspiracy. "Such conspiracies are not new, but it was finally proven by the court's verdict acquitting the accused," he said. While refusing to comment on recent allegations of accused being forced to name RSS leaders in the blast, Joshi said those who have made the statements may be speaking out of experience. The Society held a function to confer awards on Vansavi Seva Samiti and Kasturi Sanstha. The former, which is active in the Jamod Tehsil of Buldhana district, received the award for preventing religious conversions and bringing back tribals to the Hindu faith apart from other work. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo Joshi said conversion is a deep-rooted problem in the country. "However, the RSS welcomes the recent proposal by the Kerala Council of Churches which has stood against forcible conversion. It is indeed encouraging to find some Christian bodies rising against conversion. The Sangh has been working on Ghar Wapsi to bring people back to their original faith. The efforts on preventing conversion are going well too," he said. Joshi said that neglect by a segment of society is also a driving force towards a change of faith, apart from poverty and lack of education. Earlier, a member of the Dharampeth Education Society, Kumarmukund Shastri, lauded the work by Vansavi Seva Samiti. Ganesh Nathani of the Seva Samiti said widespread conversions were happening among the tribals in the Jamod area for the last 40 years. "With Samiti's efforts, as many as 95% of the persons have come back to the Hindu faith," he said. "They were lured by offering healthcare and other help. However, another group silently worked on changing the tribals' food habits by even making them habitual to eating beef," Nathani told TOI. OPS-Nainar spat continues; TTV bats to bring him back
Chennai: The spat between state BJP president Nainar Nagenthran and former AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam continued on Sunday too, with the two denying each other's claims. While OPS showed messages he had sent to Nainar as proof of reaching out to him, the BJP leader said these were not enough. Even as the two leaders sparred, AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran urged the BJP's national and state leaders to bring OPS back to NDA. The day also saw OPS asking his supporters not to talk about alliances and warned of action if they violated. The fresh exchanges began with Nainar demanding proof for OPS's claim that he had attempted to reach out to the BJP leader seeking an appointment with PM Narendra Modi when he visited Tamil Nadu last month. "OPS did not contact me. In fact, it was I who contacted OPS the day before he met chief minister M K Stalin," Nainar said. Nainar said that though OPS levelled charges against him, he would not do so in return. Within hours, OPS showed reporters at Madurai airport the messages he had sent to Nainar from his mobile. Later in the day, when reporters met Nainar at Odanilai and asked him about the messages, the BJP leader said displaying such messages from his cellphone were not enough as proof of communication. Meanwhile, TTV Dhinakaran said BJP's Delhi leaders as well as those in TN should bring OPS back to the NDA. "OPS was with BJP even before I joined NDA. BJP leaders should take steps to bring him back," he said. He blamed unnamed leaders for forcing OPS's exit from NDA and expressed confidence OPS would not join DMK. Later in the day, OPS issued a statement, warning his supporters and cadres not to talk about alliances. Instead, he said they should campaign about problems faced by people because of DMK govt and hold public rallies to explain how AIADMK is crumbling. In a related development, senior AIADMK leader C Ponnaiyan alleged OPS had long maintained a "secret understanding" with DMK.
