The Yankees intend to promote Cam Schlittler to make his major league starting debut either Tuesday or Wednesday at home against the Mariners, The Post has learned.
The Yankees have not made a decision public or etched definitively. But it was their current plan to go with the 24-year-old Schlittler, who between Double- and Triple-A this season had produced a 3.52 ERA in 15 games (14 starts).
The Yanks are in at least a bit of a rotation crisis.
Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and Will Warren have made all their starts this season, but the other two spots have been in flux and became more of an issue with Aaron Boone announcing before Saturday's Subway Series game that Clarke Schmidt will likely need Tommy John surgery, a procedure that not only will knock him out this season, but potentially all of next season as well.

Allan Winans will not have been down the requisite 15 days to come back and make a spot start on Tuesday or Wednesday unless an injury strikes and he can be promoted for that reason.
The Yankees believe that Luis Gil (lat), who has yet to pitch this year but is on an injury rehab now, will be a factor to return to the rotation somewhere between the beginning of the second half and the July 31 trade deadline.
Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) is considered more of an August possibility. Acquiring a starter before the deadline has now become more pertinent.

For now, though, Schlittler appears as if he will get a shot.
The 6-foot-6 righty, a seventh-round pick in 2022, impressed Yankee officials with his work and stuff in spring training. That continued into the season as he excelled at Double-A and was promoted to Triple-A in early June.
He pitched very well in his first four starts before his worst outing of the year last Wednesday — seven runs (six earned) in 2 1/2 innings against the Phillies' affiliate.

Yankees' Luis Gil set for rehab start in major step toward comeback

Try it free Luis Gil is set to make the biggest step in his comeback from the strained lat that's sidelined him since spring training when he starts his first rehab game on Sunday for Double-A Somerset. 'I've been looking forward to this moment since the injury happened,'' Gil said through an interpreter. 'You focus on the treatment and getting healthy again and my goal was to get on the field and help the team and contribute.' Although the loss of last year's AL Rookie of the Year stung at the time, the Yankees likely didn't realize how much they'd need Gil in the second half. Gerrit Cole is out for the season after Tommy John surgery, as is Clarke Schmidt, who underwent the same procedure on Friday. Luis Gil is set for his first rehab start. AP Aaron Boone said Saturday there were no issues with Schmidt's surgery, although he'd yet to talk to the right-hander. Saturday's starter, Max Fried — who left the game with a blister — Carlos Rodón and rookie Will Warren — who's starting Sunday in the final game before the All-Star break — have carried the bulk of the work for the rotation, which has also seen Marcus Stroman and Ryan Yarbrough spend time on the IL. The Yankees won a challenge in the top of the ninth, when Jon Berti was ruled out when he tried to steal third. JT Brubaker threw to third as Berti raced from second and Oswald Peraza appeared to tag Berti in time for the second out, but third base umpire Paul Clemons ruled Berti safe. Jason Szenes / New York Post Although Boone and the Yankees won the challenge, as Berti was ruled out for the second out of the inning, Boone was annoyed he had to challenge the play in the first place. Since the ball beat Berti to the bag, Boone thought he should have been called out — unless the umpire had a clear angle that he was safe. 'I feel like in those scenarios, especially if there's uncertainty, I think they should [have to] challenge,'' Boone said. 'Their guy takes off and is out by 10 feet. I understand it's tough.' Yankees predicted to land Diamondbacks star in deadline blockbuster

The trade deadline is always crucial for the New York Yankees. Credit to the Yankees--they're always in the playoff hunt. That means this month, as is always the case, they'll be looking for ways to beef up their roster in their quest for a World Series--something they've been missing since 2009. Advertisement The third base position is an obvious area that the Yankees could look to upgrade. Now that Jazz Chisholm Jr. is back in his natural position at third base, New York is deploying an unproven platoon of Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas at the hot corner. However, one of the most prominent voices in Yankees media believes New York will bring in a much bigger bat to play third. On Friday, Jimmy O'Brien of Jomboy Media predicted that the Yankees would acquire Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez on the most recent episode of the "Talkin' Yanks" podcast. "I think it's Suárez," O'Brien said. "I've been going deep into every trade article, every Reddit forum, everything. We've been saying there's not, like, a 'seems like they're gonna go get that guy,' and this week, the last couple days, that started to present itself. Advertisement Follow The Sporting News On WhatsApp "I reserve the right to change my mind, but for the first time, I spent all day today, every article, I kind of just prepped, and I was reading... it was like, 'Yankees, Eugenio,' and I was like, 'oh, okay.'" Suárez, 33, had an OPS of .863 and 29 home runs, most among all third basemen, entering play on Saturday. He's the biggest rental bat any team could hope to acquire--if the D-backs are willing to move on from him. There will likely be stiff competition to bring in Suárez, because other contending teams like the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Milwaukee Brewers all need third basemen as well. But the Yankees are the Yankees, so it's unwise to doubt them. More MLB: Dodgers predicted to bring athletic center fielder to Los Angeles

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge hits milestone home run at blistering fast pace

It didn't take long for Aaron Judge to hit the 350th home run of his MLB career. On Saturday, the New York Yankees slugger knocked a ball over the outfield wall to reach the milestone. While hitting 350 homers is a feat in itself, Judge reached the mark more quickly than former slugger Mark McGwire. Judge reached 350 in his 1,088th game, while McGwire hit No. 350 in his 1,280th game against Detroit Tigers pitcher Brian Moehler June 2, 1997, surpassing Harmon Killebrew, who hit his 350th in his 1,319th game. "Big Mac did a lot of great things in this game, and he's definitely a legend," Judge said. "I just think he's playing in a different league," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Judge's ninth-inning drive to right center field against the Cubs. Chicago won 5-2. Judge, who turned 33 in April, debuted with the Yankees at age 24 in 2016. The two-time AL MVP also doubled twice and is hitting a major league-leading .358 with 35 homers and 81 RBIs. "Would have been great if we got a win today," Judge said. "I've been surrounded by a lot of great teammates, been on some good teams, so they really put me in the best position to go out there and perform at my best." McGwire finished his career in 2001 at age 38 with 583 homers, still good for 11th on the career list. He admitted in 2010 he used performance-enhancing drugs and has been denied entry to baseball's Hall of Fame. The Yankees captain said he has maintained a relationship with McGwire since their first conversation. "I think it started with when I broke my first rib," Judge said. "I think his son was kind of going through the same thing, so he was first asking me how did I heal? What do we do? So, I kind of gave him some tips on that. And then we just kind of chit-chatted a little bit and kept in contact." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
