After weeks of investigations, officers have now apprehended a 12-year-old suspected car thief, who allegedly flogged multiple pinched vehicles for less than £25 each
A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of stealing cars and flogging them for less than £25.
The pre-teen was apprehended on Saturday, June 28, in Pontiac, Michigan, an area historically known for its now-shuttered General Motors automobile manufacturing plants.

According to a statement released by Sheriff Michael Bouchard, Oakland County Sheriff's Department officers caught the young suspect breaking into cars in a business parking lot in the former motoring heartland of America.

The minor, who remains unidentified on account of his age, was even clutching a license plate when Michigan police apprehended him.
WCRZ reports that there had been a series of car thefts in the area, with four vehicles pinched from one company alone. For weeks, investigators tried to solve the case, and, after setting up a stakeout over the weekend, they finally cracked it.
In their public statement, the Oakland County Sheriff's Department shared: "Through their investigation, detectives learned the boy had taken three or four vehicles over the past month, selling at least one of them for $30."
The statement continues: "The suspect entered numerous vehicles in the parking lot and when he was stopped and apprehended, he was carrying a license plate."
At the time of writing, it's unclear whether or not the individual who bought the hugely discounted stolen vehicle was also slapped in cuffs.
The youngster, whose antics have been compared to the video game Grand Theft Auto, is being held in Oakland County Children's Village, a juvenile detention centre which, a per its official website, "offers a safe, structured, therapeutic environment for youth that includes secure detention, residential treatment, and shelter care."

It's hoped that this early brush with the law could be the wake-up call the lad needs to get himself back on the straight and narrow, with Sheriff Bouchard holding out hope of a brighter future for him going forward.
The sheriff stated: "This young man is on a very bad path, attempting to live his own Grand Theft Auto. Hopefully, intervention by the courts will send him on a better life path as well as stopping the constant theft from this business."
The Detroit News reports that the state of Michigan has seen a steep rise in car thefts over recent years, with a startling 140 per cent increased in stolen vehicles noted in Oakland County between the years 2019 to 2023, as per State Police data.

According to law enforcement officials, several factors have contributed towards this significant hike, including organised gangs targeting vehicles, technological advances which have made it possible to unlock or start cars remotely.
Macomb County Sheriff's Cmdr. Jason Abro, said: "It's a huge problem, not just here, but across the country. We're throwing everything in our toolbox at it."

GM Faces Another Lawsuit Over 'Hackable' Vehicles

Legal Heat Coming to Michigan Over Car Thefts In recent years, automakers have been the target of mounting legal scrutiny over product defects that pose safety or security risks. Hyundai and Kia faced nationwide backlash and lawsuits after design flaws made their cars exceptionally easy to steal. Now, General Motors is facing similar heat. A newly filed class action lawsuit claims GM knowingly sold vehicles with easily hackable keyless entry systems – technology that allegedly allows criminals to steal cars in under 30 seconds using cheap signal-cloning devices. Filed in the Eastern District of Texas, the case centers around popular Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac models produced from 2010 to the present, accusing GM of ignoring known vulnerabilities in its key fob and ignition systems. A 'Hackable' Keyless Entry System According to the lawsuit, the core issue lies in how GM's keyless entry system works. It transmits a low-frequency signal between the vehicle and the key fob. Criminals can intercept this signal using a cloning device – typically no larger than a smartphone – and replay it to the car. Once cloned, the signal allows the thief to unlock and start the vehicle without setting off the alarm. The affected vehicles are GM's full-size SUVs and trucks, including the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado; GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. These models, the suit alleges, also have onboard diagnostic (OBDII) ports that are vulnerable to hacking. With inexpensive gear, thieves can reprogram new key fobs in minutes and drive away undetected. The plaintiff in this latest case, Jeremy Burkett, claims his 2016 GMC Sierra was stolen directly from his driveway in 2022 without any signs of forced entry. After replacing it with a newer 2023 model featuring the same keyless system, he says he now lives in constant fear of another theft. Not the First Time GM Has Been Sued Over Key Fob Tech This isn't GM's first brush with lawsuits over its allegedly flawed keyless entry technology. In 2023, the automaker faced another proposed class action involving the 2010–2023 Chevy Camaro. That complaint mirrored the current case, alleging that Camaro key fobs were also susceptible to radio signal interception and cloning. The previous lawsuit reported a spike in Camaro thefts tied to cloned key fobs. Despite these public alerts and increasing thefts, the suit alleged GM failed to take corrective action, issue a recall, or inform customers of the risk. Other automakers like Jaguar-Land Rover have begun implementing ultra-wideband protection to defend against these types of 'relay thefts,' yet the lawsuits argue GM continues to do nothing. While there are ways to protect cars from these thefts, both class actions accuse the company of deceptive and fraudulent practices for selling vehicles with known security flaws. Everything we know about the LA riots and what led to them

Photos from LA this weekend have been compared to scenes from Grand Theft Auto, with cars torched, projectiles hurled at police, and protesters shot with rubber bullets. It comes less than six months after deadly wildfires spread through California's largest city, ripping through elite postcodes and burning down mansions. Donald Trump has called to 'send in the troops!' to quell the disorder, even as the state governor blamed him for 'inflaming tensions', saying things were under control until he intervened. State governor Gavin Newsom said he would be taking the president to court for 'commandeering' the state National Guard, which he called 'illegal and immoral'. Let's get this straight:1) Local law enforcement didn't need help.2) Trump sent troops anyway — to manufacture chaos and violence.3) Trump succeeded.4) Now things are destabilized and we need to send in more law enforcement just to clean up Trump's mess. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) June 9, 2025 He claimed Trump was 'hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control' and urged: 'Los Angeles: don't take Trump's bait.' The White House hit back as the row intensified, with spokesperson Abigail Jackon saying: 'It's a bald-faced lie for Newsom to claim there was no problem in Los Angeles before President Trump got involved.' They were sparked by sweeping immigration raids, as the president tries to fulfill his quota of arresting 3,000 suspected illegal migrants every day. In his inaugural address, Trump said: 'We will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.' He is ramping up the raids as well as the rhetoric, sending ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) into workplaces thought to employ undocumented migrants. Protests in LA began on Friday night and continued throughout the weekend. A significant flashpoint was sparked by officials being seen outside a branch of Home Depot hardware store, in the mainly Latino suburb of Paramount. As fears grew that they planned to raid the store, passing drivers began honking horns, as protesters gathered and the situation escalated. Border patrol officials fired tear gas and flash-bang grenades at those gathered, who were themselves throwing rocks and other objects and demanding they leave the area. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video After seeing dramatic footage of the rioting here and elsewhere, Trump claimed police had lost control and National Guard troops should be sent in, something which further inflamed tensions, it was claimed. LA is not the only US city to see protests in response to the immigration crackdown. Protesters have come out against it nationwide, saying it will tear families apart and criticising a policy being rolled back which previously restricted officers' abilities to arrest undocumented immigrants at 'sensitive' locations, such as schools, churches and hospitals. The main hotspots have been in downtown LA, Paramount, and neighbouring Compton. Protests continued into Sunday evening in Paramount, with several hundred demonstrators gathered near a doughnut shop, and authorities holding up barbed wire to keep the crowd back. Crowds also gathered again outside federal buildings in central Los Angeles, including a detention centre, where police declared an unlawful assembly and began to arrest people. Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria was among celebrities posting about the riots. More Trending Sharing a post from Gavin Newsom describing the threat to deploy Marines as 'deranged', she added that it was 'Un-American' while also sharing a video of a woman being separated from her child during an ICE raid. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish's brother Finneas has claimed that he was tear-gassed by the National Guard at a 'very peaceful' protest in Los Angeles. The singer-songwriter, 27, took to social media to detail his experience, sharing his message to more than four million followers on Instagram. 'Tear gassed almost immediately at the very peaceful protest downtown – they're inciting this,' he wrote.
