Company selling Sydney Sweeney's bathwater soap sold for $1.5 billion; but actor won't make a dime from it; here's why

Earlier this year, American personal care brand Dr Squatch received a huge shot in the arm when one of their products went viral globally. Sydney's Bathwater Bliss, a soap made out of actor Sydney Sweeney's actual bathwater, blended celebrity fetish and marketing in an unprecedented manner, selling out the bars of soap faster than one could type 'Sydney'. The company has now been bought by consumer giant Unilever for a whopping $1.5 billion. Sydney Sweeney partnered with Dr Squatch to sell a soap made from her used bath water.
Founded in 2013 in the US, Dr Squatch began as a personal care company with products for men. In 2016, the company gained popularity with a series of viral TikTok campaigns aimed at Gen Z consumers. By 2021, it had reached an annual revenue of $100 million. It gained worldwide prominence in 2024 when Sydney Sweeney signed on as brand ambassador. Her first ad campaign as a 'body wash genie' gained significant attention. Sydney's Bathwater Bliss selling out thousands of bars in hours was further proof of the company's virality.
Last month, British consumer giant Unilever announced that it had reached a deal to acquire Dr Squatch. The Financial Times later revealed that Unilever would pay $1.5 billion for the acquisition. 'Its viral social-first marketing strategies, partnerships with influencers and celebrities, and culturally-relevant collaborations with limited-edition packs have helped to drive sales and grow a loyal consumer following on social media platforms and beyond,' Unilever said in a statement. How much does Sydney Sweeney make from it?
While the Unilever deal is a windfall for the founders and key investors, Sydney Sweeney, the face of the company, may not benefit monetarily. The actor had partnered with Dr Squatch for just the bathwater soap and is not an investor in the company. Like any brand ambassador, an increase in the company's valuation will not get her any monetary benefit. Sydney can, however, hope that the new management will keep her on board as the ambassador, and a renewed contract will earn her more. But that is a negotiation for later.

If that happens, he said, the U.S. would not impose the 26 percent tariffs that were announced in April and paused until July 9. "Right now, India doesn't accept anybody in," Trump said. "But I think they will. If they do, we'll have a deal with much lower tariffs." U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said the U.S. and India are very close to a deal. He said the agreement would lower tariffs on American goods going to India and help India avoid hefty new tariffs that could begin next week. Indian officials stayed in Washington through June 30 to continue talks. According to Indian government sources, both countries are working hard to reach a trade agreement and solve remaining issues. A White House official said the Trump administration is focusing more on making a deal with India than with Japan, especially before the July 9 deadline. On that date, a 90-day pause on tariff increases ends, and India could face a new 27 percent tariff, up from the current 10 percent. Talks between India and the U.S. have had some disagreements, especially over tariffs on car parts, steel, and farm products. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, speaking at an event in New York, said they are "hopefully more than halfway" through the talks. He said both sides will need to compromise. Meanwhile, Trump was more critical of Japan. He said it was unlikely the U.S. would make a deal with Japan by the deadline. Trump said Japan refuses to buy rice from the U.S., even though it sells millions of cars in the American market. He warned that if Japan doesn't agree to U.S. demands, he could impose tariffs as high as 30 percent or 35 percent on Japanese imports, higher than the 24 percent previously announced and paused until July 9. "So what I'm going to do, is I'll write them a letter saying we thank you very much, and we know you can't do the kind of things that we need, and therefore you pay a 30 percent, 35 percent or whatever the numbers that we determine," he said.

Alphabet's Google has been hit by an EU antitrust complaint over its AI Overviews from a group of independent publishers, which has also asked for an interim measure to prevent allegedly irreparable harm to them, according to a document seen by Reuters. Google's AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional hyperlinks to relevant webpages and are shown to users in more than 100 countries. It began adding advertisements to AI Overviews last May. The company is making its biggest bet by integrating AI into search but the move has sparked concerns from some content providers such as publishers. The Independent Publishers Alliance document, dated June 30, sets out a complaint to the European Commission and alleges that Google abuses its market power in online search. "Google's core search engine service is misusing web content for Google's AI Overviews in Google Search, which have caused, and continue to cause, significant harm to publishers, including news publishers in the form of traffic, readership and revenue loss," the document said. It said Google positions its AI Overviews at the top of its general search engine results page to display its own summaries which are generated using publisher material and it alleges that Google's positioning disadvantages publishers' original content. "Publishers using Google Search do not have the option to opt out from their material being ingested for Google's AI large language model training and/or from being crawled for summaries, without losing their ability to appear in Google's general search results page," the complaint said. The Commission declined to comment. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority confirmed receipt of the complaint. Google said it sends billions of clicks to websites each day. "New AI experiences in Search enable people to ask even more questions, which creates new opportunities for content and businesses to be discovered," a Google spokesperson said. The Independent Publishers Alliance's website says it is a nonprofit community advocating for independent publishers, which it does not name. The Movement for an Open Web, whose members include digital advertisers and publishers, and British non-profit Foxglove Legal Community Interest Company, which says it advocates for fairness in the tech world, are also signatories to the complaint. They said an interim measure was necessary to prevent serious irreparable harm to competition and to ensure access to news. Google said numerous claims about traffic from search are often based on highly incomplete and skewed data. "The reality is that sites can gain and lose traffic for a variety of reasons, including seasonal demand, interests of users, and regular algorithmic updates to Search," the Google spokesperson said. Foxglove co-executive director Rosa Curling said journalists and publishers face a dire situation. "Independent news faces an existential threat: Google's AI Overviews," she told Reuters. "That's why with this complaint, Foxglove and our partners are urging the European Commission, along with other regulators around the world, to take a stand and allow independent journalism to opt out," Curling said. The three groups have filed a similar complaint and a request for an interim measure to the UK competition authority. The complaints echoed a U.S. lawsuit by a U.S. edtech company which said Google's AI Overviews is eroding demand for original content and undermining publishers' ability to compete that have resulted in a drop in visitors and subscribers.

India proposes retaliatory tariffs Against US Over Auto Duties at WTO

India on Friday proposed retaliatory tariffs against the US under the World Trade Organization (WTO) norms over latest American tariffs on automobile imports in the guise of safeguard measures. "The safeguard measures would affect $2.895 billion imports annually into the US of the relevant products originating in India, on which the duty collection would be $723.75 million," New Delhi told the WTO. Last month, India sought consultations with the US after Washington adopted a measure in the form of a 25% tariff increase ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, as well as certain auto parts originating in or from India. India said its proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would be in the form of higher tariffs on selected products originating in the US. "Accordingly, India's proposed suspension of concessions would result in an equivalent amount of duty collected from products originating in the US," it said. "This notification is made in connection with safeguard measures extended by the United States of America on imports of automobile parts from India." The US imported $89 billion worth of auto parts globally last year, with Mexico accounting for $36 billion, China at $10.1 billion, and India at only $2.2 billion. This is the second instance of New Delhi proposing retaliatory tariffs on US goods. In May, India proposed to levy retaliatory duties on certain American products under the WTO to counter US tariffs on steel and aluminium in the guise of safeguard measures. At the time, New Delhi told the WTO that these measures would affect $7.6 billion imports into the US. On March 26, the US adopted a safeguard measure in the form of a tariff increase of 25% ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, and on certain auto parts from India. These measures were effective May 3 for auto parts, and for an unlimited duration. The steps are still to be notified by the US to the WTO, but are, in essence, safeguard measures. India has maintained that the measures taken by the US are not consistent with the General Agreement on Trade and Tariff 1994 and the agreement on Safeguards. As consultations sought by India on these tariffs are still to happen, New Delhi said it reserves right to suspend concessions or other obligations to the US in the meantime.
