Four teenagers arrested after drone seen hovering above high-security prison

Yahoo11-07-2025
Four teenagers have been arrested after reports of a drone circling over a maximum-security jail led to the seizure of contraband including drug paraphernalia.
A drone, mobile phones and suspected drugs were also found after a car containing the suspects, aged 15, 16, 18 and 19, was stopped on the A46 in Alcester, Warwickshire.
West Mercia Police said a seized 'contraband package' was believed to be intended to be flown into HMP Long Lartin in south Worcestershire in the early hours of Friday.
The force said in a statement: 'A report was received shortly before 2am today that a drone was circling the airspace above the prison in South Littleton.
'Inquiries were made and patrol officers were on the tail of a suspect vehicle by 2.25am.
'The car was stopped on the A46 in Alcester with four people inside.
'A quick response and good co-ordinated work meant the contraband package had not made it into the prison and it was seized.'
Those arrested were held on suspicion of conspiracy to convey prohibited items into a prison and remain in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector James Bamber said: 'An immediate response from us and good policing work by everyone involved meant we were able to intercept a suspect vehicle before it reached its suspected final destination.'
Anyone who spots a drone near the prison or who has information about other suspicious activity near HMP Long Lartin is urged to report the matter via 999 immediately.

Night Safe Officers to be deployed in York city centre every weekend

New Night Safe Officers will soon be visible on York's streets. From this Friday (July 25) through to early January 2026, two "friendly and highly visible" Officers will be on patrol every Friday and Saturday night from 8pm to 2am. The Officers will make efforts to quell anti-social behaviour, keep noise levels down, and de-escalate potential issues before they grow. They are also to act as a link between the public, door staff, and emergency services. It is hoped that the Officers will help to mitigate pressure on emergency services. The initiative is funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Policing, Fire, and Crime Directorate. It supports York's Purple Flag accreditation, which recognises the city as, in the words of a Combined Authority spokesperson, "among the safest, most welcoming, and best-managed nighttime destinations in the country." Jo Coles, York and North Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire, and Crime, said: "David Skaith's vision as Mayor is to deliver safer communities for all, and our £14,473 investment in the Night Safety Marshals project will help to establish a visible, reassuring presence for people who are enjoying York's amazing nightlife, and to further enhance the welcoming environment that visitors have come to expect from our city." The Night Safe Officers will join York BID's existing Riverside and Taxi Marshal programmes. More information about the investment in the initiative, part of the region's Community Safety Serious Violence Fund 2025/26, is available at

Police attend protest outside London hotel which 'will be housing asylum seekers'

Metropolitan Police officers attended the scene of a protest outside a hotel in east London where asylum seekers will reportedly be held. The protest took place on Tuesday outside the four-star Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf, which the government intends to use as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers, according to Tower Hamlets Council. A police statement from last night said: "Officers are currently in attendance at a protest outside a hotel in Canary Wharf. "We have a policing plan in place and will continue to monitor events." A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council said: "We are aware of the government's decision to use the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf to provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers. "It is important that the government ensures that there is a full package of support for those staying at the hotel. "We are working with the Home Office and partners to make sure that all necessary safety and safeguarding arrangements are in place." There have been a series of demonstrations outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, since asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was charged with sexual assault after an incident earlier this month in which he is alleged to have attempted to kiss a 14-year-old girl. Kebatu denied the charge when he appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Thursday. Four men have been charged with violent disorder after the protests outside the hotel in Essex, which is believed to be housing asylum seekers, police say.

'He lied to my face': Basildon Facebook marketplace scammer steals £1,450 camera

A FACEBOOK Marketplace scam has left a Basildon man £1,450 out of pocket after he was tricked into handing over a camera with a fake bank transfer. Liam Hopper, 31, said the con had a 'massive impact' on his livelihood as a photographer after he fell victim to a man using a fake banking app to pay for the camera before vanishing and deleting his Facebook account. Despite being savvy to online scams, Liam said the man's friendliness in person when he came to collect the camera skewed his judgement when he handed it over. Impact - Liam is a videographer and photographer by trade and says the loss of the camera means he will have to take out a loan to replace it and keep working (Image: Liam Hopper) Liam said: "When he arrived we went into my garage so he could check the camera, he told me he didn't know much about them and he was buying it as a gift for his girlfriend. "He agreed to buy it and brought up a mobile banking app, I entered my details and it all came up correctly with the right bank; it didn't set off any alarm bells. "We waited for five minutes and nothing happened, I said I can't let you take it without the money. "I didn't realise when I gave my bank details it was a foreign bank account, at the bottom it said transactions can take between one and two working days. "I thought it will pop in on Monday and let him walk away with the camera, but as time went by I began to think 'what have I done?'" "Sure enough I went on Facebook to message him and the account was gone, as was the number he rang me on." Theft - The moment the man walks away with the camera knowing the money won't go through (Image: Liam Hopper) Following the incident on Sunday, Liam has reported the incident to police and is now urging residents to be aware. Liam added: "It's my livelihood. My business insurance won't cover it because it's classed as deception rather than theft, if he had prized it out of my hands I would be able to get my money back. "I will have to take out a loan to be able to do my job. Losing the money isn't the most aggravating thing, if I had dropped it and it smashed I could put it down to bad luck but he came into my house and lied to my face." "I recognise online scams all the time, I've grown up with the internet; but I suppose having met and spoken with him I let my guard down. "I'll never use Facebook again, there's no recourse against these scammers on their platform, zero accountability."
