CSIR-IICT celebrates National Technology Day 2025 with ASTC annual convention
Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Dev Varma, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, he stated, 'This is the age of research, of technology, of finding ways to make the world a better place.'
He also lauded the efforts of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in democratizing access to science and research, expressing hope that CSIR institutions will continue to deliver transformative contributions to society.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr D Srinivasa Reddy, Director of CSIR-IICT, highlighted the importance of scientific innovation in tackling global challenges.
He said, 'The theme this year is very meaningful. It reminds us that science and technology must help solve the problems we face today.'
He also showcased CSIR-IICT's key contributions, including compostable plastics, affordable sanitary pads, and AGR technology that converts organic waste into biogas.
Dr Vinay Kumar Nandicoori, Director of CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), emphasised the central role of technology in CSIR's mission. He discussed CCMB's pioneering work in rare disease diagnostics, wildlife forensics, DNA fingerprinting, and the development of a low-cost screening test for sickle cell anaemia priced under Rs 100.
Dr Prakash Kumar, Director of CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), noted that "the courage to think differently creates impact." He outlined NGRI's initiatives to build an earthquake-resilient society through mega-projects assessing and mitigating seismic hazards in the Himalayas, Ganga Plains, and other vulnerable areas.
Delivering the ASTC Foundation Lecture on 'Gut Microbiome – The Science & Application,' Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, underlined the critical role of the gut microbiome in modern medicine. He explained its profound influence on immunity, metabolism, mental health, and its potential in managing a wide range of disorders.
In the Presidential Address, Dr Ch Mohan Rao, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council–ASTC and NASI Hyderabad Chapter, gave an overview of the inception of National Science Day and highlighted the ongoing activities of NASI.
The event also featured the release of the latest issue of ASTC Communications, the felicitation of contributing authors, and the presentation of ASTC Awards in categories including Science Popularization, Excellence in Science and Technology, and Lifetime Achievement.
Dr D Srinivasa Reddy and Dr S Venkata Mohan, Director of NEERI and former Chief Scientist at CSIR-IICT, were honoured with the Excellence in Science and Technology Award.

‘Ensure new technologies are used for betterment of society, IIIT-D'
Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) N. Kalaiselvi has said that India had made significant achievements in the field of science and technology and called on the students particularly technical students to ensure that new technologies were put to use for the betterment of the society. Delivering the convocation address at the seventh annual convocation of Indian Institute of Information technology(IIIT) in Dharwad on Friday, she said that engineering students should try to align themselves with the goals of 'Vikasit Bharat' by adapting to new and emerging technologies. Ms. Kalaiselvi said that in the knowledge-driven era and only those possessing exquisite skills had a fare chance to excel and that was the reason why more emphasis was being laid on helping students acquire more skills. It was necessary for the students to adapt various skills along with achieving excellence in their academics to shape a better career. Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT-Dharwad Shridhar Vembu asked the students to be cautious about the paradigm shift in Information Technology and all other areas due to advent of Artificial intelligence. Be vigilant and adaptable to newer technologies and challenges ahead, he said. Referring to how handloom industry changed with the advent of powerlooms, he asked the IT professionals to consider the fact that once powerful coding machines arrived, there would be less demand for coding professionals and they would have to look for other alternatives. Taking the example of a school being run in Tamil Nadu that helped students develop self confidence, self discovery and self respect, he called on the students to imbibe all these qualities to succeed in life. Director of IIIT-Dharwad S.R. Mahadeva Prasanna provided a brief report of the achievements of the institute. Gold medallists During the convocation, topper of the institute, Amrit Anand from Department of ECE was honoured with the President of India Gold Medal and also Institute Gold medal. Prerana Bhat from DSAI and Karthik Avinash from CSE was honoured with the Institute Gold Medals, Aarsh Desai with Director's Gold medal. Enduri Jahnvi was adjudged Best outgoing girl student. In all 257 students including 132 students of Computer Science, 70 of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, 55 of Electronics and Communication Engineering were awarded degrees during the convocation.

The university will now be able to operate formally in accordance with the set conditions and official the Ajay Kumar Garg University, proposed by the Indian Institute of Management and Engineering Society, Ghaziabad, has been issued a letter of intent under Section 6 of the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act, establish a university, an institution must meet certain requirements, including a minimum endowment fund of Rs 5 crore, 20 acres of land in an urban area and at least 24,000 square metres of academic of State for Higher Education Rajni Tiwari, Principal Secretary of Higher Education M P Agrawal, Special Secretary Nidhi Srivastava and other departmental officials were present on the occasion, the statement added.
