Boeing reports smaller loss, sees more 'stability' in operations

France 246 days ago
The aviation giant reported a loss of $697 million, compared with a loss of $1.4 billion in the year-ago period. Revenues rose 34.9 percent to $22.7 billion, topping analyst estimates.
Boeing delivered the most planes in a second quarter, or in the first half of a year, since 2018, reflecting efforts to improve its quality control operations following a number of safety problems.
Boeing reaffirmed plans to seek in 2025 a production increase for the 737 MAX from the Federal Aviation Administration.
That approval stands as a key goalpost in Boeing's turnaround following a January 2024 Alaska Airlines flight that saw a window panel blow out mid-flight.
Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg, who joined the company last August, said he was heartened by the progress but that more work is needed.
"I would say we're turning the corner," Ortberg said in an interview on CNBC. "We've done a lot of work on the culture. The teams are rallying around that work."
But "we've got a lot of work yet to do," he added.
Ortberg said he was "confident" Boeing would be cashflow positive in the fourth quarter, but that the third quarter may be affected by a "big payment" associated with a settlement of a US Department of Justice criminal case related to two fatal 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019.
Boeing has previously said it expected to be cashflow positive in the second half of 2025.
Certification challenge
Boeing increased production on the 737 MAX to 38 per month during the quarter. Ortberg declined to estimate when the FAA would approve a rate increase to 42 per month, but said the company would be working on the project in the third quarter.
Production of the company's other top-selling jet, the 787 Dreamliner, now stands at seven per month, up from five earlier in the year.
Boeing has resumed deliveries to Chinese carriers after they were halted at the height of the trade conflict earlier this year between Washington and Beijing.
The two countries have suspended their most onerous tariffs and are now working on a deal, with talks ongoing in Stockholm on Tuesday.
In a letter to employees, Ortberg said the certification of the 737-7 and 737-10 models is taking longer than previously expected due to challenges with anti-ice mechanisms on the plane.
"Progress on this solution has taken longer than we expected and we now anticipate that certification for the airplanes will take place next year," Ortberg said in the letter.
Shares of Boeing fell 2.4 percent in morning trading.

'Enough is enough': Thousands of Boeing defence workers strike over pay and conditions

Boeing workers who build fighter jets went on strike Monday at midnight Central Daylight Time. About 3,200 workers at Boeing facilities in St. Louis; St. Charles, Missouri; and Mascoutah, Illinois, voted to reject a modified four-year labor agreement with Boeing, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said Sunday. In a post on X, the union said: '3,200 highly-skilled IAM Union members at Boeing went on strike at midnight because enough is enough.' The vote followed members' rejection last week of an earlier proposal from the troubled aerospace giant, which had included a 20% wage increase over four years. 'IAM District 837 members build the aircraft and defense systems that keep our country safe,' said Sam Cicinelli, Midwest territory general vice president for the union, in a statement. 'They deserve nothing less than a contract that keeps their families secure and recognizes their unmatched expertise.' At the time of the earlier vote, union leaders had recommended approving the offer, calling it a 'landmark agreement' and saying it would improve medical, pension and overtime benefits. The union members rejected the latest proposal after a weeklong cooling-off period. 'We're disappointed our employees rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth and resolved their primary issue on alternative work schedules," said Dan Gillian, Boeing Air Dominance vice president and general manager, and senior St. Louis site executive. "We are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan to ensure our non-striking workforce can continue supporting our customers.' Boeing has been struggling after two of its Boeing 737 Max airplanes crashed, one in Indonesia in 2018 and the other in Ethiopia in 2019, killing 346 people. In June, one of Boeing's Dreamliner planes, operated by Air India, crashed, killing at least 260 people. Last week, Boeing reported that its second-quarter revenue had improved and losses had narrowed. The company lost $611 million in the second quarter, compared to a loss of $1.44 billion during the same period last year.

Italy competition authority fines China's Shein 1 million euros

Italy's competition authority (AGCM) on Monday announced a 1-million-euro ($1.16 million) fine on Chinese fast fashion online retailer Shein for misleading customers on the environmental impact of its products. The fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services CO. Limited, a Dublin-based company that operates Shein's website in Europe, at the end of a "greenwashing" investigation that Italian watchdog had opened in September. AGCM said the environmental sustainability and social responsibility claims promoted on Shein's website "were sometimes vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in other cases omitted and misleading." The Italian authority said its assessment was influenced by an "increased duty of care" falling on Shein, "because it operates in (the) highly polluting sector and with highly polluting methods" of fast and super-fast fashion. Reuters has contacted the company for a comment. When the investigation was launched last year, the company said it was "ready to cooperate openly with relevant Italian authorities, providing the necessary support and information to address any inquiries".

French fashion retailers see 2.7% revenue drop during summer sales

The French Fashion Institute (IFM) has reported disappointing results for the four-week summer sales period in France, which ended on July 15. Sales by French apparel retailers fell 2.7% during the period, in comparison with the 2024 summer sales. 'Apart from department stores and budget chains, commercial activity has slumped across all retail channels,' said IFM. Of the businesses surveyed by IFM, 57.7% said footfall was down compared to last year's four-week summer sales period. In H1 2025, items purchased at a discount (end-of-season sales, event sales, promotions, etc.) accounted for a 34% share of the value of all fashion purchases by French consumers. In the first six months of 2025, the revenue generated by textile and apparel retailers in France was 0.1% down compared to H1 2024. In terms of the IFM forecasts published in February, 'the market has deviated slightly from our relatively optimistic median scenario, which expected a 0.2% increase in apparel and textiles consumption in 2025.' In H1 2025, the top three apparel retailers in France were second-hand site Vinted followed by budget chain Kiabi and Amazon. Chinese e-tailer Temu made the top 15 for the first time, just behind Zara.
