'I hadn't dated in 26, 27 years. And at that point, I still hadn't dated, so my reference was my age, basically. That's what I told my friend.' However, Owens' pal didn't agree with the attorney. He added, 'She goes, 'It doesn't matter. You've said some things that are just incredibly wrong.' And I go, 'I've got to apologize.'' 8 Mel Owens poses with Jessi Ngatikaura and Layla Taylor. Disney Owens also set the record straight on why he agreed to do the reality show despite not wanting to date anyone over 60. 'Because I didn't know anything about 'The Golden Bachelor' ages,' he confessed. 'I didn't know the age range. To me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I go, 'Oh, okay.' So I'm thinking that's the 'gold' years for me. My reference again was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that's why the comment. I didn't know.' When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.' I go, 'Not that I know of,'' he recalled, admitting that he would have been upset if he had been. 'Looking back on it and looking forward, it's a great experience,' Owens gushed. 'It's such a great experience for me, and so, oh yeah, I wouldn't have wanted to be recast. But I'm going to earn it back just by being myself and being fair and apologetic and honest and be myself.' Not everyone is so quick to give this year's golden bachelor a second chance. Some fans shared they won't be tuning in when Owens' season airs next month. 8 Mel Owens is the new 'Golden Bachelor.' Disney But the California resident thinks that would be a mistake. 'Well, if you don't tune in, you'll never know,' Owens teased. 'So you got to tune in. And again, I'm trying to earn it back. So, watch the show and see if I earn it back. Because I apologized.' 'To earn it back, you have to be earnest in your work to get the trust back,' Owens continued. 'And everybody there is smart and they can see through you if you're lying or you don't mean what you say. That's why I say tune in.' 8 Mel Owens chats with other attendees at the Disney Upfront. Disney Along with urging fans to turn on their televisions, the ABC star knows he deserved the criticism he received. 'But I deserved [the anger],' Owens added. 'That was a mistake by me. It's unfair. It's insensitive, like I said. And I have to earn it back every single moment that I'm on the show.' In June, Owens said he told producers his preferred age range is '45 to 60, just being honest.' He also told them that 'if they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them. I go, 'Well, that's an NFL term.'' His comments were quickly faced with backlash. 'He doesn't seem like the type for 'in sickness and in health,'' one fan wrote on X, while a second chimed in: 'Awful. I won't watch with a jerk in the lead.' A third social media user stated, 'doesn't sound like much of a mystery as to why he's still a bachelor. Anyone who chooses to go on that show deserves whatever disaster they get.' Owens was married to Fabiana Owens from 2002 to 2020, and the exes share sons Lucas (born in 2005) and Andre (born in 2007), according to Us Weekly. 'Golden Bachelor' Mel Owens breaks silence on 'insensitive' age cutoff controversy
The incoming "Golden Bachelor" Mel Owens is speaking out about the controversy surrounding his cutoff age comments. In June, the NFL veteran-turned-lawyer and father sparked backlash when he revealed he would eliminate any of the dating show's female contestants aged 60 or over – even if they were there for the right reasons. But Owens, 66, clarified his comments and apologized to Bachelor Nation fans in a Glamour magazine interview published Friday, Aug. 1. Owens – who admitted that he now knows his belief "was incorrect" – told the outlet that "my friend called me from Michigan. She's 65, and I went to school with her, and she's an attorney and a hot shot for the Big Ten in administration," adding that he "didn't know she's also a big fan" of "The Bachelor." The new 'Golden Bachelor' Mel Owens says he will 'cut' any woman older than 60 "She said to me, 'Mel…no. What are you doing?' She goes, 'I'm reading all about it.' I didn't know that it hit that hard. She goes, 'You've got to right the wrong.' So I listened to her," Owens told Glamour. "That's how I found out, basically." He is set to star on Season 2 of the ABC reality TV dating franchise's male edition for older contestants, succeeding the inaugural lead Gerry Turner, who also sparked backlash for offscreen behavior. When asked by Glamour why he decided to go on a show called "The Golden Bachelor" if he didn't want to date women over 60, Owens said it was "because I didn't know anything about 'The Golden Bachelor' ages." "I'm thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60," the ex-linebacker told Glamour. "That's my age range. I'm thinking that's the gold years for me." Despite this, Owens said he "apologized to the women on the show." "When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them," Owens added. "I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.' And hopefully, these last two weeks I earned some of that back." Owens also said that his season's contestants' ages are "60, 65, maybe 70," and they gave him a hard time about his comments. Why Mel Owens' age cutoff comments garnered backlash Owens first stirred fan outrage in a June 4 interview on the "In The Trenches" podcast, hosted by Jon Jansen for the University of Michigan Athletics (where Owens attended college). "It's blind up until they get out of the limo. But they asked me, 'What's your preferences?' So, I just said 45 to 60, just being honest," Owens shared. And then we had lunch with the executive producer. I said, 'you know, if they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them,'" Owens said. "Oh Mel, you can't, you know, this is not the 'Silver Bachelor.' It's the 'Golden Bachelor.'" Owens said the executive producer told him not to "worry about it" and the women were still "going to be hot." The former NFL first round draft pick also garnered controversy for other comments: "Well, I don't think they're (there are) going to be artificial hips or wigs there, right?" he asked on the same podcast. "Because I know there's amazing women out there." When does the 'Golden Bachelor' 2025 season air? Season 2 of "The Golden Bachelor" premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24. Gerry Turner warns ‘Golden Bachelor' of serious mistake with controversial age cutoff
'Golden Bachelor' alum Gerry Turner is certain the show's new lead, Mel Owens, will be 'cheating himself' if he decides to pursue his controversial plan of cutting contestants who are '60 and over.' 'I think it would be unfortunate, and I really think he will have a change of heart in this. I think he will see the grace and the charm of women who are over 60 and the confidence they carry, and I think he'll have a change of heart,' Turner, 73, told Fox News Digital of Owens — who recently took fans by surprise when he admitted his plans to eliminate any woman on the show who is over 60 years old. 'The people that I met in my season, I go through them, and it's like, they're all a gift. To have gotten to know them… Each and every one of them [brought] some unique characteristics to the show, unique characteristics to life.' 'The age thing… ignore the number, deal with the person,' Turner added. During an appearance on the 'In The Trenches' podcast in June, Owens, 66, opened up about the age limitations he allegedly requested ahead of casting. 'It's blind up until they get out of the limo. But they asked me, 'What's your preferences?' So, I just said 45 to 60, just being honest,' he said. 'And then the process went, and I was selected, right? Evan Agostini/Invision/AP Additionally, Owens said he expects the contestants to all be in good shape. 'I had no resume, but they asked me, what is my, like, my profile?' Owens said. 'Well, they got to be fit because I stay in shape. [They] should work out and stuff. And I told them, you know, try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff, right? 5 During an appearance on the 'In The Trenches' podcast in June, Owens, 66, opened up about the age limitations he allegedly requested ahead of casting. Disney 'His comments about anybody that's had a hip replacement or has a wig or anything like that, I really don't believe that the ABC producers in casting, particularly casting that I have a high level of confidence with, I don't think they would be casting a person who has that shallow of a perspective. I think some of [Owens' comments] requires some context, and it may have been taken out of context and so forth.' 'But bottom line is, I hope he does look at it differently because if he doesn't, I think he'll be cheating himself.' During the first season of the show, the ladies vying for Turner's heart were between 60 and 75 years old. Turner married contestant Theresa Nist shortly after the finale, but the couple got divorced three months later. 5 During the first season of the show, the ladies vying for Turner's heart were between 60 and 75 years old. The Walt Disney Company Despite the failed relationship, Turner is grateful for his experience and hopes Owens can take a page from his playbook. 'If he treats each and every one of them with courtesy and respect and is a good listener, pays attention to them and so forth, and ignores their age number, I think it'll be fine,' said Turner. 'Everyone that gets thrown into this situation has to find their own way. I was fortunate enough, I had very good mentoring on the show. I had people that carefully moved me through some of the pitfalls that maybe Mel hasn't quite avoided as much because I remember specifically being told just, 'Gerry, ignore the age thing,' that 'You'll really find beautiful women of all ages in the show.' And I think he will as well.' These days, Turner — who was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer last year — has found love again and is living life to the fullest. 5 Despite the failed relationship, Turner is grateful for his experience and hopes Owens can take a page from his playbook. The Walt Disney Company 'I decided that I wasn't going to say 'no' to anything,' Turner said of his change in perspective after his diagnosis. 'Anything that came along, any trip, any chance to have fun, anything that I could do, I was going to take it on. Because I felt myself, even before the diagnosis, I was starting to get to that couch potato point where it was a little nicer to sit at home and do nothing than go out and fight whatever challenge it was to travel. And that's really been quite a change for me.' 'So now something comes along, I say 'yes' to it,' he added. 'I'm going to go. I'm going to do. So every day is a gift.' Turner, who recently started dating Indiana native Lana Sutton, said he's 'happy' with where his life is taking him now. 'She has more energy than I do. She needs less sleep than I do. I really think she's a more logical thinker than I am, which I think that's a lot. But the nice part is we think and we approach things very similarly, so we don't have any conflicts as we're trying to make decisions and so forth. We generally arrive at the same place, sometimes not the same way, but usually the same place.' 'With Lana now in the picture, she makes [life] even better. It's so good to have a partner that understands and is in it with you 100% and so forth. So it took me a while to get to this point, but I'm pretty happy with where I am.'
