Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is heading to neighboring Sri Lanka for a state visit from July 20–23, but his itinerary suggests that the trip is more of a luxury retreat for Pakistan's de-facto ruler than a diplomatic mission to the Island nation. Munir's lavish trip comes at a time when the Pakistan economy lies in complete ruin and Islamabad is literally begging global financial bodies for loans to keep the country running.
What does Asim Munir's Sri Lanka itinerary reveal?
Media reports citing Asim Munir's itinerary reveal shocking details about the Pakistan Army chief's visit to Sri Lanka. The Pakistani Field Marshal will fly to the Island nation in special luxury jet and is expected to stay at one of the most lavish five-star hotels in Colombo, a privilege which has been barred to Pakistani civilian politicians, including federal ministers, under the country's strict austerity measures.

While in Sri Lanka, Asim Munir will be greeted by ceremonial motorcycle escorts, go on multiple helicopter rides over the famed famed Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Adam's Peak, and embark on opulent sightseeing tours of Colombo.
Notably, Pakistan's civilian government has barred cabinet ministers from foreign travel, banned prohibited luxury hotel stays, and frozen all non-essential spending. However, these austerity measures don't seemingly apply to Field Marshal Asim Munir, the country's shadow ruler.

Pakistan economy in shambles
Its no secret that the Pakistan economy is in complete ruin, as common Pakistanis battle record inflation, rising poverty, and widespread unemployment. Islamabad's external debt has ballooned to over $133 billion, and nearly half of the country's federal budget is spent on paying back loans taken from various financial institutions and nations.
Thus, while the common folk are struggling to meet ends, and some even finding it difficult to arrange two square meals a day for their families, Pakistan's army strongman Asim Munir is shamelessly embarking on lavish tours of foreign nations on the back of hard-earned taxpayer money.
How Pakistanis responded to Munir's lavish escapades?
Though freedom of speech is a pipe dream in Pakistan and a single comment against the authorities, especially the Army, could land a citizen in prison or even worse, Asim Munir's lavish trips have been widely criticised by Pakistani social media users, with some calling it 'joyride on broken backs' and 'a mockery of national pain.'
This isn't the first time that Asim Munir has drawn the ire of Pakistani commoners for his hypocritical flaunting of elite privilege. Earlier, Pakistani social media erupted in fury after Munir was allegedly seen shopping at a luxury mall in the US before his lunch meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.
Critics of the Pakistani government, particularly the shadow Army regime have condemned the deepening rot witnessed in the country's governance, especially after the ouster of former premier Imran Khan, who is currently in prison on trumped up charges. Pakistani dissidents have termed Munir's foreign trips as decadence under the garb of diplomacy, noting that while the state preaches and imposes austerity measures on ordinary citizens, its army overlords are emptying the country's coffers with impunity.

India doubles down on logistics infra as global order shifts from efficiency to resilience

Synopsis A recent report indicates a significant surge in warehousing activity, driven primarily by manufacturing and e-commerce sectors. This domestic demand insulates India from geopolitical disruptions. TIL Creatives The last quarter offers ample proof of just how vulnerable the global logistics network remains. As the world grapples with rising tariffs, fractured supply chains, and shifting trade alliances, countries are actively re-evaluating their global strategies. Amid this churn, India is charting a distinct course investing heavily in domestic logistics infrastructure as a lever for long-term economic last quarter offers ample proof of just how vulnerable the global logistics network remains. The recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East disrupted shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, triggered a surge in oil prices, and sent global freight insurance costs soaring. European shipments to Asia were rerouted, maritime insurance premiums soared, and nations dependent on external trade corridors scrambled to India's logistics and warehousing sector felt little turbulence, thanks to its structural strength. Unlike traditional supply chains tethered to global trade cycles, India's warehousing story is powered by domestic demand. Knight Frank's India Warehousing Report (Q1 2025) shows a 50 % YoY surge in leasing activity. Manufacturing led the charge, with leasing up 94 % and accounting for 48 % of total take‑up, evidence of long‑term confidence. 3PL volumes grew 12 %, though their share slipped to 23 %, signaling shifting occupier dynamics. E‑commerce, meanwhile, rebounded sharply, posting a 151 % jump in space uptake from a lower domestic‑demand engine is India's strategic moat. While the global narrative centres on de‑risking and near‑shoring, India already has the playbook: warehousing insulated from geopolitics, anchored in the aspirations of 1.4 billion it's not just domestic trade that is surging. India is actively rewriting its global trade strategy with infrastructure. In May 2025, the India–UAE Trade Connect under CEPA went live, unlocking seamless logistics corridors between Jebel Ali and Indian ports like Mundra and Nhava Sheva. Port-based warehousing demand in Gujarat and Maharashtra spiked almost immediately, with Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZs) reporting renewed leasing interest. At the same time, as the India–UK Free Trade Agreement moved into final-stage discussions in June 2025, developers in northern India began positioning for a shift in flows from textile, food processing, and auto component sectors. On the ground, warehousing itself is evolving. Coastal hubs are seeing a rise in port-led warehousing for transhipment and value-added services. In urban India, the Q-commerce boom is triggering a surge in micro-fulfilment centres and dark stores, shrinking delivery timelines and pushing retailers to hold inventory closer to consumption clusters which are defining a new logistics are noticing. According to Knight Frank, the real estate sector led a remarkable surge in private equity (PE) investment in 2024, reaching $4.2 billion, a 32% surge from the year prior. Warehousing led the charge, accounting for 45% of these investments and surpassing the office sector, which had held the highest share of PE investments since 2017. Global funds are looking for assets that are resilient, compliant, and ESG-aligned and warehousing, once a low-visibility asset class, is now delivering risk-adjusted returns with real operational is creating a logistics framework that can scale with demand, absorb external shocks, and meet global benchmarks all while staying forward, the focus must shift to unlocking the next layer of institutional capital. Easing land acquisition for warehousing parks, simplifying inter-state goods movement, and enabling REIT, InvIT, or AIF-style participation could further democratise access and deepen market the global order shifts from efficiency to resilience, India's warehousing sector may well become the blueprint for both. In spirit of brotherhood, a tribute to ‘Op Sindoor'

A symbol of interfaith harmony and national pride is taking shape in Meerut's Sadar Bazaar. A group of Hindu and Muslim youngsters have come together to build a grand 'kanwar' that has been named 'Operation Sindoor' to celebrate the country's military prowess and the spirit of communal unity. (HT) The initiative is being led by Gaurav, who, with 20 of his companions, is crafting the kanwar as an expression of both devotion and patriotism. It will be taken to Haridwar on July 15. The group will collect holy Ganga water on July 16 and return to Meerut. What makes this kanwar remarkable is not just its scale — 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide — but also its design, which features a statue of Bharat Mata (Mother India), a model of a Rafale fighter jet, an Army tank, and temples, showcasing India's military might and spiritual heritage. 'This is not just a kanwar, but also a glimpse of our nation's strength,' said Neeraj Dhameja, an artisan working on the project. The sentiment was echoed by Imam Shahnawaz Jamali of the local mosque, who has been actively supporting the initiative. 'We stand with our nation. The path of religion passes through humanity. Our unity against terrorism is the real strength of this country,' he said. Gaurav said the kanwar was also dedicated to the 26 innocent people killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, as well as to India's armed forces and martyrs. The brutal attack had sparked nationwide anger, and the Indian Army responded decisively, delivering a strong blow to terrorists and those supporting them across the border. 'Operation Sindoor is a symbolic tribute to those who lost their lives and to the bravery of our armed forces who defended the nation with unmatched courage,' Gaurav said. This special kanwar will be brought from Haridwar, and the Jalabhishek (ritual water offering) will be performed at the famous Augharnath Temple in Meerut.
