China's SMIC may have used older lithography gear to build Huawei's new 5nm chip

Phone Arena26-05-2025
China's largest foundry, SMIC, is also the third-largest foundry in the world. Thanks to U.S. and Dutch sanctions, the foundry cannot obtain cutting-edge lithography machines. Without the ability to use extreme ultraviolet lithography machines (EUV) to transfer circuitry patterns to silicon wafers, SMIC was believed to be limited to producing chips using its 7nm node. We are now in the middle of an interesting mystery.
Huawei's new Mate Book Pro laptop runs HarmonyOS and is powered by the Kirin X90 chip designed by Huawei's HiSilicon chip design unit. One leaker says that the X90 is a repurposed Kirin 9010 with a different layout of the CPU cores. We should know for sure sometime over the next few days when in-depth reviews of the chip are expected to be released. The Kirin 9010 AP was used to power Huawei's photography-based Pura 70 flagship series that was released in April 2024 and it was built using SMIC's 7nm N+2 process node.
Did SMIC really build a 5nm chip using DUV? | Image credit-X A tweet on "X" from leaker @Jukanlosreve credited Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV with running the report about the 5nm node for the X90. Another X user, @zephyr_z9, claims that the Kirin X90 has a transistor density of 125 million transistors per mm2. That makes it less dense than TSMC's 5nm node (approximately 138 million transistors per mm2) but close to the density used with Samsung Foundry's 5nm node. What makes this amazing is that it appears to have been achieved using a DUV machine.
Not all of the numbers were positive. One analyst reportedly discovered that SMIC is producing 3,000 wafers per month with an extremely low 20% yield. Most foundries want to see a minimum yield of 70% before starting mass production of a chip.
Despite the anemic yield, if SMIC is able to produce 5nm chips using DUV, this will worry U.S. lawmakers who have been concerned about Huawei's ability to design cutting-edge silicon for the Chinese military and AI even with U.S. sanctions.

Honor X70 is official with mammoth 8,300mAh battery

The Honor X70 is official, and it houses an impressive 8,300mAh silicon-carbon battery pack. Charging is a bit complex - all units get 80W wired charging, but if you opt for the 512GB model, the phone will also support 80W wireless charging. The phone comes in four colors: Phantom Night Black, Bamboo Green, Cinnabar Red, and Moon Shadow White, and in four configurations: 8/128GB, 8/256GB, 12/256GB, and 12/512GB. At the front of the X70 is a 6.79-inch 1200x2640px 120Hz AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 6,000 nits. Inside, a Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset runs Android 15-based MagicOS 9.0. There's a single 50MP f/1.9 wide-angle camera with PDAF and OIS at the back. Upfront is an 8MP f/2.0 selfie shooter. The Honor X700 is well-protected. It covers IP66, IP68, and IP69 dust and water standards, and has been drop-tested to 2.5 meters. The tempered glass display is placed on a two-piece damping layer, which then sits on a shock-absorbing frame, and finally, a honeycomb bracket. Honor also assures that the X70 can withstand water at up to 85 ℃, a 4-hour continuous salt spray, and is waterproof up to 6 meters. The display can be used in heavy rain and with gloves, and you can summon the phone's YoYo AI assistant to discharge dust and water from the phone. The Honor X70 is now on pre-order and will ship from July 18. Huawei Mate X7 details leak

Huawei's Mate X6 folding smartphone launched in November, and the company is already working on its successor, which we assume will be called Mate X7. Today some details about what we can expect from it have been leaked in China, so let's take a look. The Mate X7 allegedly has a 7.95-inch LTPO OLED inner folding screen with "2K" resolution and ultra-thin glass on top. It will come with a high rating for water resistance (though the exact one isn't mentioned), and overall it will be another ultra-thin book-style foldable device. Huawei Mate X6 For the main camera, Huawei is currently testing two solutions, one using a 50 MP 1/1.56-inch type sensor, the other using a 50 MP 1/1.3-inch type sensor, both with physical variable aperture. There's also going to be a 50 MP periscope telephoto with macro abilities, and a multi-spectral camera. Of course, there should be an ultrawide in there too, but it's not detailed in today's rumor. So the Mate X7 is looking like a good upgrade compared to its predecessor for sure. It's unclear exactly when it will be made official, but we assume we're still a few months away at this point. We'll let you know when we find out more about it. Source (in Chinese) | Via

Global smartphone shipments barely grow in Q2, Samsung retains lead

Michail, 15 July 2025 The latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows a modest 1% year-over-year growth for global smartphone shipments during the April-June (Q2) period. This is traditionally one of the tougher periods for smartphone makers, and there were several macroeconomic factors that affected global demand. Economic uncertainty, including tariff volatility, forex instability, unemployment and inflation, combined with weak demand in China, all contributed to flat growth. Going into the actual breakdown by brand, Samsung led the way with an estimated 58 million shipments and a 19.7% market share. The recently launched new Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A56 models were key growth drivers for the brand. Apple came in second place with an estimated 46.4 million shipments and 15.7% market share. Cupertino saw double-digit growth in emerging markets but also experienced a 1% drop in sales in China, despite being the leading brand in China during the 618 e-commerce festival. Xiaomi was the third leading brand on the global stage with 42.5 million shipments and a 14.4% market share, which contributed to a net 0.6% year-over-year change. Vivo came in fourth with 27.1 million shipments and 9.2% market share, while Transsion (Infinix, Tecno, itel) occupied the fifth spot with 25.1 million quarterly shipments and an 8.5% market share. Despite the ongoing economic hardships and uncertainties, the positive growth in global shipments suggests that the global smartphone market is primed for growth in the coming months.
