
Dubai Police showcases three years of ‘Positive Spirit' achievements
DUBAI (ALETIHAD)The Dubai Police, represented by the Positive Spirit Council, held a press conference to showcase the achievements of the initiative over the past three years.The event, held in the Cycling Hub at the Dubai Police Club, was attended by Major General Consultant Dr. Ali Singel, Health Advisor for Dubai Police; Professor Ali Hassan Salman Nasser, the Regional Ambassador for the World Federation of Friends of the United Nations in the Middle East, North Africa, the UAE, and Oman; Fatima Buhajeer, Chairperson of the Positive Spirit Council; Mohammad Al Hajjaji, General Coordinator of the Positive Spirit Council; as well as several officers and media representatives.During the press conference, Fatima Buhajeer explained that Positive Spirit is a community-based initiative that aims to promote positivity and spread happiness among residents through various activities and events.She added: 'The initiative also aims to create a more cohesive society and reinforce values of tolerance and coexistence among individuals from diverse backgrounds. It targets all community members, including children, youth, and seniors from various nationalities. This ongoing effort seeks to cultivate a happy and safe environment by promoting positivity, collaboration, and cooperation among everyone.
Initiative GoalsBuhajeer emphasised that the initiative aims to strengthen community ties through activities and events designed to unite residents. She stated, 'The Positive Spirit initiative promotes tolerance and coexistence, encourages positive dialogue among community members, and stimulates participation by providing ample opportunities for involvement. Furthermore, it aligns with Dubai Police's strategic goal of enhancing community happiness and fosters a culture of volunteering through diverse initiatives.' Buhajeer noted that through its initiatives and me, the Positive Spirit Council achieved a remarkable transformation in the relationship between the community and Dubai Police through its diverse events, initiatives, and community sports programmes.'By fostering trust and communication, it has consistently enhanced social security in residential areas, yielding notable positive outcomes over the years,' she added.Furthermore, Buhajeer indicated that, through the Positive Spirit initiative, the council organised 933 events from 2022 to 2024, engaging participants from over 37 nationalities. This includes 241 community programmes, 289 sports programmes, 292 courses and lectures, and 111 cultural competitions.
AwarenessBuhajeer confirmed that the council has played a crucial role in enhancing security in residential areas under the jurisdiction of police stations since its establishment. 'This effort reflects the council's ongoing commitment to fostering positive behaviors among community members and raising awareness of police services and communication channels with Dubai Police,' Buhajeer continued.

She explained that the council's approach is grounded in a preventive strategy for community engagement since the launch of its events and programmes. 'By involving community members as volunteers, it has empowered them to become key players in supporting the security system and enhancing the safety of their neighborhoods. Consequently, the council has emerged as an exemplary model for strengthening community security, serving as a soft force in promoting tolerance, coexistence, and community solidarity,' Buhajeer added.The chairperson of the Positive Spirit Council shared that the council, under the guidance of Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, places significant emphasis on volunteer work as part of its agenda. She pointed out that the council is committed to fostering a culture of volunteering among employees and community members, recognising the profound impact of such efforts on society, particularly in promoting values like compassion, solidarity, and generosity.Buhajeer said, "Through our initiatives and community events, we provide annual volunteer opportunities for residents to engage in this vibrant movement. This enriches their lives and supports Dubai Police's strategic goals of creating a happier and safer community. Since 2022, the Council has offered 222 volunteer opportunities across various fields, benefiting 6,650 volunteers.'Buhajeer emphasised that the council's initiatives align with Dubai Police's strategic goals to enhance community happiness by promoting security, trust in the police, and overall quality of life, contributing to the vision of a safe and resilient city.Buhajeer noted that the events, programmes, sports activities, and cultural competitions organised by the council, in cooperation with police stations, have achieved a remarkable public satisfaction rate of 98.9%.Buhajeer further confirmed that Positive Spirit initiatives have attracted 17,917,442 views on social media platforms over the past three years.
Additionally, she reaffirmed that the Council has received 15 awards at local, regional, and international levels since launching its initiatives and programmes. Among these prestigious accolades are the International Association of Chiefs of Police Award (IACP) in the Community Policing category; the Fatima Bint Mubarak Women Sports Awards for Best Sports Creative Initiative; the Emirates Women Award in the Social Community Work category; and the Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work, which includes both the Distinguished Supporter Award for Volunteer Work and the Best Voluntary Initiative Award, among others.

EAD showcases Abu Dhabi's marine conservation leadership at UN sustainable development forum
22 July 2025 13:08 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has showcased Abu Dhabi's global leadership in marine conservation and sustainability at the 2025 United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), as part of the UAE's official delegation. Held at the UN headquarters in New York from July 14-23, the HLPF is a central platform for reviewing the progress of the 2030 collaboration with the UAE Government Experience Exchange Office (GEEO), and the UAE SDG Secretariat, Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD and Vice Chair of the Global Council on SDG14, participated in a series of high-level sessions advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on SDG 14: Life Below Water. Her participation reflects the UAE's commitment in accelerating the 2030 SDGs and its role in building global consensus on sustainable development to enhance global stability and Excellency Dr Al Dhaheri attended the official opening of the UAE exhibition, which spotlighted the country's progress across priority SDGs. She presented Abu Dhabi's contributions in marine habitat restoration and environmental innovation, including its leadership in global platforms such as the Mangrove Alliance for Climate and the upcoming IUCN World Conservation Congress taking place in Abu Dhabi in October the official SDG14 plenary session, Her Excellency Dr Al Dhaheri delivered a keynote statement, outlining Abu Dhabi's transformative achievements in marine conservation, blue carbon innovation, and sustainable fisheries Excellency said: 'In the UAE, we have made SDG14 a national priority – a commitment grounded in science, backed by policy, and enabled by finance. Abu Dhabi serves as a prime example of what's possible. We are restoring critical blue carbon ecosystems, from mangroves to seagrass meadows, and we've launched the world's largest coral rehabilitation initiative, targeting over four million coral colonies by 2030.'Dr Al Dhaheri also highlighted Abu Dhabi's marine biodiversity efforts, including safeguarding the world's second-largest dugong population of 3,500 individuals, monitoring over 7,900 sea turtles, and deploying environmental DNA and AI-powered tools to map species health. She also highlighted the emirate's success in raising the Sustainable Exploitation Index from 8.9 per cent in 2018 to 97.4 per cent by the end of 2024 – a result of data-driven fisheries management and policy the UAE-led ministerial roundtable, Scaling What Works, she joined global leaders to showcase tested SDG interventions. Global Interest Reinforces the Award's StandingHis Excellency Ahmed Darwish Al Muhairi, Director General of the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, reiterated that this overwhelming interest from male and female Quran memorizers reflects the exceptional success of the developmental vision initiated by the patron of the award, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Wide International Participation Ibrahim Jasem Al Mansouri, Acting Director of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, stated that the 28th edition received applications from across the globe, including Arab and Islamic countries as well as Muslim communities in various non-Muslim countries. Egypt topped the list with 1,410 applications, followed by Pakistan (571), Indonesia (505), India (391), Morocco (248), Syria (211), Bangladesh (211), Iraq (187), Nigeria (133), and Yemen (132). He added that significant numbers of applications were received from Quran memorizers in the United States, Canada, Russia, and European countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Applications were also submitted from many other countries across Asia and Africa, in addition to New Mansouri pointed out that this level of global interest aligns with the goals of the award's new developmental vision, through which Dubai aims to expand its influential role in serving the Holy Quran, promoting its memorization, encouraging excellence in recitation and understanding of its sciences, and instilling its values and teachings among the younger generation. He stressed that this growing international interest motivates the award to accelerate efforts and develop more initiatives, programs, and tools to encourage a greater number of countries, institutions, and individuals to engage positively in Quran memorization and recitation, and deepen their connection to its sciences. Preliminary Evaluation Stage UnderwayThe Dubai International Holy Quran Award received 5,816 applications during the registration period, which ran from May 21 to July 20. Of these, 30% were submitted under the female category. All eligible applications have entered the preliminary evaluation stage, which began early July and will continue until the end of the applicants from the preliminary round will move to the second stage, which will involve direct video calls between the memorizers and the evaluation committee. This phase will run from September 1 to 30. Finalists will then advance to the final evaluation round, which will take place in person in Dubai during the second week of Ramadan. Among the groundbreaking updates in this edition is the introduction of a dedicated category for female participants, bringing the total number of categories to three: Full Quran Memorization – Male, Full Quran Memorization – Female, and the Islamic Personality of the Year Award. Participants may now apply through direct personal nomination, via a recognized Islamic center, or through official bodies worldwide. The developmental vision also includes expanding the scope of international participation, modernizing nomination, evaluation, and judging procedures, and launching new initiatives to enhance the quality and performance of participants.
