Tajik officers hail UAE model for international police leadership
27 June 2025 20:12 DUBAI (ALETIHAD)Two police officers from the National Central Bureau of Interpol, Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Lieutenant Colonel Mirahror Soliev and Lieutenant Colonel Saidov Kosim Abdukosimovich, have praised the UAE's forward-thinking policing model including the high standards of the Police Innovation and International Leadership (PIL) programme recently hosted in Dubai. Lieutenant Colonel Soliev, an experienced officer with a background in international coordination and UN missions, highlighted the exceptional organisation of the programme. 'Bringing together participants from 39 countries and delivering a seamless experience is a major achievement. It extends beyond the well-thought-out curriculum to encompass the complete structure, logistics, accommodation, and daily support. Even the smallest aspects were handled with professionalism that reflects Dubai's commitment to excellence.'Soliev also commended the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and drone patrol systems in Dubai Police's operations. He expressed particular interest in the 'Drone Box ' system, which he sees as highly adaptable for Tajikistan's terrain and security needs. 'This approach allows for faster response times and efficient resource allocation. It's a model we should study and consider applying at home.'Beyond the technical aspects, Soliev also highlighted the value of international networking. 'This has been a valuable opportunity to build real friendships and lasting professional connections. By the end, we felt like one family, united by a shared mission and mutual respect.'He also commended Dubai Police's strong commitment to consolidating international cooperation. 'The leadership has created a global platform that fosters real dialogue and exchange between nations. The programme demonstrated how policing innovation when shared openly, can serve as a bridge between diverse security cultures. Dubai Police has positioned itself as a hub for international collaboration.'Lieutenant Colonel Saidov Kosim Abdukosimovich, who also represented Tajikistan in the programme, echoed these sentiments, noting the rich exposure to advanced policing strategies and leadership frameworks. 'The practical field modules, especially those related to tactical operations and scenario-based training, were extremely beneficial,' he said. 'Additionally, the focus on leadership values, mental resilience, and physical fitness made this programme stand out.'Kosim praised Dubai Police's Positive Spirit Council for embedding community engagement and emotional intelligence into their organisational culture. 'The Positive Spirit initiatives are a powerful example of how policing can extend beyond enforcement to uplift communities and foster harmony. This holistic approach left a deep impression on me.'He added that staying physically fit and mentally balanced is critical in law enforcement roles. 'Activities such as team sports and guided fitness sessions reminded us of the importance of overall well-being in leadership and decision-making.' Both officers extended their sincere appreciation to the Government of Tajikistan and their ministry for supporting their participation in this international initiative. 'It's through visionary Tajikistan's leadership that we are able to engage in programmes like this and return equipped with knowledge that can make a real impact,' Kosim said.

Dubai: Alcohol abuse among hardest to treat, expert says
Dubai Police have launched a sweeping public awareness campaign to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, aiming to tackle drug use and addiction trends in the country. The multi-agency initiative, held across key shopping malls in the city, focuses on early detection, stigma reduction, and expanding access to treatment for vulnerable groups. More than 600,000 people engaged with the campaign at Dubai Hills Mall alone last year, with thousands more reached through activations at Mirdif City Centre, BurJuman, and Reef Mall. The outreach effort brought together Dubai Customs, the State Security Service, Dubai Health, mental health hospitals, and frontline rehabilitation centres to confront what officials called a growing public health challenge. 'Addiction doesn't discriminate,' said Brigadier General Dr Abdul Rahman Sharaf Al-Maamari, Director of the International Protection Center, General Department of Narcotics Control, Dubai Police. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. 'It affects workers, students, parents, and even visitors. That's why coordinated national action, including awareness and secure rehabilitation pathways, is so important.' Among the most difficult cases discussed were those involving mothers struggling with substance abuse. Authorities highlighted the challenges of identifying such vulnerable individuals and ensuring treatment without added trauma. 'We are not just focusing on arrests, but on awareness, early intervention, and coordinated care,' he added. 'Finding the right place and establishing a strong protocol for addiction cases, especially when children are involved, is a national priority.' The campaign included interactive workshops, remote lectures, public consultations, and creative competitions targeting different community groups, from school and university students to employees, domestic workers, and airport arrivals. In 2024 alone, Dubai Hills Mall recorded over 619,724 campaign beneficiaries, while Mirdif City Centre and Dubai Mall jointly engaged 14,567 participants. These figures, released by the General Department of Narcotics Control, reflect a growing public interest in education around addiction and mental health. Treatment centers like Erada and Al Amal Hospital for Mental Health have been central to this year's awareness efforts. They have also seen a rise in individuals seeking help, often thanks to family involvement. 'Stigma around addiction is slowly decreasing, and that's encouraging,' said Dr Ammar Hamid Al Banna, Director of Al Amal Hospital. 'More families are stepping forward early, which helps us provide timely support and reduce long-term harm.' He added that alcohol remains one of the hardest substances to treat, not only because of its accessibility but also due to the deadly withdrawal symptoms when not managed medically. Opiates and stimulants also remain prevalent in addiction cases reported to hospitals and clinics. Erada Center, one of the UAE's leading rehabilitation hubs, reported a 43 per cent success rate in treated cases. 'At Erada, our 43 per cent success rate reflects how targeted treatment and community support can change lives,' said a spokesperson for the centre. 'But it's a journey, not a one-time intervention.' Dubai Customs also reiterated its evolving role in combating addiction beyond seizures and inspections. 'Frontline agencies like ours play a key role in early detection,' said a senior Customs representative. 'But beyond seizures, we are now part of a larger effort to support treatment and reintegration.' This year's campaign didn't just aim to raise awareness, but to actively involve the public in shaping future initiatives. Community members were invited to contribute ideas, ask questions, and access on-the-spot consultations, making prevention and recovery a shared responsibility.

Emma Raducanu praises Wimbledon for ‘amazing job' of blocking stalker from competition
British tennis star Emma Raducanu said Wimbledon did 'an amazing job' in preventing a man who was accused of stalking her from buying tickets to the championships at SW19 this month. The man followed Raducanu to at least four competitions earlier this year, and on noticing him at a tournament in Dubai, the world No. 38 previously said she 'couldn't see the ball through tears' due to her distress. British media reported that the man had tried to obtain tickets to Wimbledon, but was flagged and blocked by the All England Club's security system. 'Wimbledon and everyone did an amazing job. I got a notification, the police contacted me and told me everything was OK,' Raducanu told BBC Sport. 'I know that I am not the first athlete to go through this, and I probably won't be the last – not just as an athlete, but females in general.' In March, Raducanu noticed what the WTA called a 'fixated' man during a match at the Dubai Tennis Championships, explaining that the incident left her 'distraught.' 'I saw him in the first game of the match and I was like, 'I don't know how I'm going to finish,'' she said at the time. 'I literally couldn't see the ball through tears. I could barely breathe. I was like, 'I need to just take a breather.'' The man, who had also been at previous tournaments in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Doha before appearing in Dubai, was ejected from the tournament and later detained by Dubai police. He signed a document pledging to 'maintain distance' from Raducanu. Meanwhile, Raducanu will pair up with five-time grand slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at this year's revamped US Open mixed doubles, which will take place on August 19 and 20, several days before the scheduled start of the last slam of the year. 'He asked me earlier on in the year. I was very surprised and honored and obviously excited,' Raducanu told BBC Sport, adding that she 'went through the formality of asking my coach. But of course, I'm gonna say yes.' Raducanu, who shot to fame when she won the 2021 US Open aged 18 having come through qualifying, said that she has a close friendship with Alcaraz which blossomed in 2021. 'We go back a long way. And I think we both started getting to know each other a lot more in 2021 and when I had that run at Wimbledon. … I think he won, like, in five sets in the first round or something,' she explained. 'Ever since, we stayed in touch, and he's done so well obviously since and continued winning. … It's been amazing to see.' Raducanu has also reflected on their long-standing friendship and 'genuine connection' with Alcaraz 'It is nice and I think, for all of us, we really value those connections that we had from when we were young,' Raducanu said, per The Guardian. 'Because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age and because that's a real genuine connection, because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends – but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you.' CNN's George Ramsay contributed reporting.

Emma Raducanu praises Wimbledon's ‘amazing job' over stalker's bid to buy tickets
Emma Raducanu has praised Wimbledon after a man who has been stalking her was banned from buying tickets for this year's championships. The former US Open champion hailed the All England Club's 'amazing job,' after intercepting an attempt from the man who had been following her at several events over the last year. The man was handed a restraining order by police in Dubai after turning up at the Dubai Tennis Championships and appearing at Raducanu's match, leaving her afraid and in tears. But Wimbledon's security system raised a red flag after the man's recent attempt to buy tickets for SW19 this year, with the application subsequently rejected. 'Wimbledon did an amazing job. I got a notification and the police contacted me and assured me that everything was OK,' Raducanu, who will return to court this week at Eastbourne in preparation for Wimbledon next week, told BBC Sport. 'I feel OK, I feel comfortable and safe. I've had great protection whenever I've been at these events recently. I feel a difference and that makes me feel more comfortable.' Raducanu, who shot to fame with her victory at the US Open as a relatively unknown 18-year-old in 2021, is competing at the Eastbourne Open this week. And she paid tribute to compatriot Katie Boulter who this week revealed the extent of the online abuse she regularly receives. 'I'm glad Katie spoke out about it and I'm glad she took a stand, because it's something we all have to deal with – some to different levels, but all are pretty extreme,' Raducanu added. Raducanu will return to Flushing Meadows this year with a new doubles partner after confirming her bid to win the mixed doubles alongside the current Wimbledon and French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz. 'She's going to be the boss!' he said, with a wide smile in his press conference. 'The US Open came to us and gave us the opportunity to play mixed doubles and I'm super excited about it. It's going to be great. 'I've known Emma a really long time and I have a really good relationship with her, it's going to be interesting. The tournament told us about the mixed tournament and I was thinking it couldn't be better than Emma. I asked Emma if she wanted to play doubles with me and yeah, I made that special request.' Asked if she said 'yes' straight away, Alcaraz humorously responded: 'She took a while! She had to think a little bit!'
