SQUAD NEWS: Long-term injury returnee and possible debutant in Wire's 21
CONNOR Wrench has been named in a Warrington Wolves matchday squad for the first time in almost a year.
The 23-year-old has completed his recovery from his second ACL injury in as many years, which he sustained during a home victory over Huddersfield Giants on July 5 last year.
Head coach Sam Burgess hinted during his pre-match press conference that Wrench is unlikely to feature this week but with numbers stretched in the outside-backs, the academy graduate is expected to play imminently.
There is also a potential senior debut for centre Zack Gardner - the son of Wire's head of performance Ade Gardner - after he too was named in Burgess' 21-man squad.
Winger Matty Ashton became The Wire's latest and most crushing injury blow this week after he was ruled out for the rest of 2025 after damaging the ACL and MCL in his right knee during the Challenge Cup semi-final victory over Leigh Leopards.
Second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon is named in the squad but is expected to miss the game having aggravated a rib injury during the same game while winger Josh Thewlis is out under concussion protocol having failed a head injury assessment.
George Williams (ankle) and Danny Walker (knee) remain absent while there is no place in the squad for Zane Musgrove, with fellow prop Max Wood drafted into the 21.
Jordy Crowther, Ben Currie, Matt Dufty, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Zack Gardner, James Harrison, Adam Holroyd, Toby King, Oli Leyland, Arron Lindop, Joe Philbin, Sam Powell, Stefan Ratchford, Dan Russell, Marc Sneyd, Rodrick Tai, Jake Thewlis, Paul Vaughan, Max Wood, Connor Wrench, Luke Yates
Wakefield could welcome former Wire winger Matty Russell back into contention this week as well as forward Seth Nikotemo.
Trinity have themselves been hit by injuries with the likes of Caleb Hamlin-Uele, Matty Storton and Olly Russell among those missing.
Their 21-man squad is unchanged from the one ex-Warrington boss Daryl Powell picked from for their Magic Weekend victory over neighbours Castleford Tigers a fortnight ago.

Report – Genoa Interested In Signing Inter Milan & Argentina Star On Loan
Genoa are reportedly interested in signing young Inter Milan and Argentina attacking midfielder Valentin Carboni on loan. This according to today's print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInter1908. Advertisement Inter Milan attacking midfielder Valentin Carboni is currently back at the Nerazzurri. The 20-year-old is part of the Inter squad at the Club World Cup. Carboni has fully recovered from an ACL tear that he suffered in October. That injury had ruled him out of the majority of last season. The Argentine had initially joined Marseille on loan last summer. Reportedly, the French club had a purchase option, whilst Inter had a buyback option. However, the ACL injury completely disrupted any progress Carboni had been making. (Photo by) Now the question is whether Carboni will go on loan again, or stay at Inter. Advertisement The Argentine has made appearances at the Club World Cup. And he in fact scored the winner in stoppage time against Urawa Red Diamonds, his first senior goal for Inter. Therefore, it seems entirely possible that Cristin Chivu will give Valentin Carboni his chance next season. But on the other hand, it could also be another loan out for Carboni, who spent the 2023-24 season on loan with Monza. And according to Tuttosport, Genoa are keen on the 20-year-old's signature this summer.

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce on the identity of the next great Boston Celtics team
What will be the identity of the next great Boston Celtics team? The Celtics are currently in the midst of retooling their roster on the fly this offseason, making moves to cut salary without losing too much salary in the process. Now under the NBA's dreaded second apron, Boston has added talent to the team on the offensive end in former Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons and ex-Atlanta Hawks backup forward Georges Niang. Niang is not known for his defensive chops at age 32 so much as his perimeter shooting, and Simons, an especially good shot from beyond the arc, is known to be a poor defender. Will Boston's next contender identity keep leaning into offense, or are these moves a temporary shift in team dynamic? Few people are better positioned to talk about the identity of a Celtics contender than Hall of Fame champion Boston forwards Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, who weighed in on these questions on a recent episode of their 'Ticket and the Truth' podcast. Josh Thewlis on his spectacular try, gaining confidence and key defensive play
Josh Thewlis touches down for the opening try against Hull FC after breaking from deep inside his own half (Image: Paul Currie/ WARRINGTON Wolves needed a good start against Hull FC, and Josh Thewlis provided it in spectacular fashion. With The Wire tasked with coming off their own line early in the game, the winger – back in his regular position after two games at full-back – burst through the Black and Whites defence and streaked home from almost the full length of the field. Advertisement From there, his side never looked back and secured a victory that keeps them alive in the play-off race, when defeat would have all but ended their hopes. 'It was just a yardage carry, I got my nose through and away I went,' the older Thewlis brother told the Warrington Guardian post-match as he completed another game alongside younger sibling Jake, who was on the opposite wing. 'We've been working hard lately and sticking to process and it showed today. 'It was a pretty easy switch – we do two or three training sessions a week so it was just picking up my job again. I spoke to Sam (Burgess) and it's a case of wherever the team needs me. Advertisement 'It was good going back to full-back – you see the game a lot differently – but it's good to be back on the right edge and building some connections with Rod (Tai) and George (Williams).' On the victory, he added: 'We did need it. Closing that gap between us and the six is definitely something we spoke about this week. 'It was either going to be seven points after today or three, and we've made it three so we're back in touch. Hopefully we can charge now for the rest of the season. 'It's been tough recently – we've been putting a lot of effort into games without coming away with points and wins. 'The players have been frustrated more than anyone – I get fans are frustrated as well – but it's good to see us get the benefits out of our hard work. Advertisement 'I think we can gain a lot of confidence from that.' Thewlis the younger joined his brother on the scoresheet shortly afterwards as Warrington struck out into a 12-0 lead, but a nervy second half appeared to be in store after the visitors narrowed the gap to two points with a surge late in the opening period. However, The Wire nailed their start again after the break and back-to-back tries from Sam Powell and Lachlan Fitzgibbon stretched them out to an unassailable lead. 'We spoke about our start all week – Hull have got a good starting pack that come hard with Herman Ese'ese leading it,' Thewlis said. Advertisement 'Our three middles got after it this week and we got a 12-0 start. 'They pegged us back with some unanswered points but in the second half, our emphasis was on going hard again and I think we delivered on both of them.' Warrington kept Hull pretty much at arm's length for the rest of the game, but there was time for a scare when Lewis Martin crossed on Thewlis' right edge. However, video referee Jack Smith chalked the try off after replays showed centre partner Rodrick Tai had done enough to force Martin into touch before he grounded the ball. 'We spoke about moments and winning more of them,' Thewlis said. Advertisement 'Our system works but it's about making one-on-ones and Rod getting around and making that kind of tackle is part of our system. 'It was a massive effort – the game could have been in the swing there but that popped their bubble a bit.'
