Muharram: 5k volunteers to assist cops
As part of these arrangements, Dhobi Ghat Maidan has been temporarily separated by erecting tin-shed barricades between two places of worship.
Despite protests from Hindu organisations, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has granted permission for a three-day fair to be held on three acres of land at Dhobi Ghat Maidan, charging the organising committee Rs 1 lakh. This marks the first time the minority community sought the civic body's permission for the Muharram event, as the IMC secured ownership of the ground from the court last year.
The administration has installed a tin-shed partition, delineating the space for the Muharram event and separating it from the remaining land around the Hanuman Temple. Temporary police outposts are already established at both ends of the partitioned area, and additional forces of around 500 security personnel will be deployed to maintain order.
Indore additional police commissioner Amit Singh confirmed the deployment of an extra 1,000 personnel, bringing the total force on the ground to approximately 3,500, including officers from all police stations.
Flag marches will be conducted in sensitive and important areas, while drones will provide close monitoring. "Additional vehicles have been made available for regular patrolling, and command and control centres have been erected at strategic places to keep a round-the-clock watch on every activity," Singh stated.
He also mentioned that CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic locations, and regular checks are being conducted using modified Hand Held Metal Detectors (HHMD).
Additionally, stoppers have been placed at the entry and exit points of sensitive streets. Singh said that a significant new initiative involves engaging around 5,000 volunteers from the minority community for the first time. These volunteers have been provided with T-shirts, whistles, and caps for easy identification and will assist police, including plainclothes officers, within the Muharram fair area.
DJs have been instructed not to play objectionable music and to adhere strictly to volume and time deadlines. To ensure uninterrupted vigilance during potential power cuts, patrolling parties have also been equipped with torches, he said.
"The 48 hours of deployment of the forces, in shifts, as part of the execution of this plan will start from Saturday night," he said, adding that volunteers from the majority community will also assist the force at the selected locations.

At the time of release, an additional Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 is charged. CM Yogi asks farmers to take carbon credit benefit by planting trees
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday asked public representatives to encourage farmers to undertake large-scale tree plantation on the boundaries of their fields, saying doing so will help them receive benefits under the carbon credit scheme. Addressing a meeting of gram pradhans, mayors, district panchayat chairpersons through video conferencing amid the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' tree plantation campaign, the chief minister said that farmers in seven divisions of the state are set to receive about Rs 42 lakh as carbon credit this year. While the month-long 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' plantation drive began on Saturday, the UP government has set a target of record plantation of 37 crore saplings in a single day on July 9. Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, the chief minister said that under the carbon credit system, farmers will receive $5 after the survey. According to the CM, Rs 32.80 lakh was paid to farmers as carbon credit last year, and this year, farmers in Devipatan, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Mirzapur, Kanpur, Varanasi and Aligarh divisions are set to get Rs 42.20 lakh. He also said that under the program, moringa or sahjan plant saplings are being distributed to malnourished families. Claiming that in the eight years of his government, the forest cover in the state has increased from 9 per cent to 10 per cent, the CM said that UP ranks second in India in terms of green cover growth. 'From 2017 to 2024, UP has seen an increase of 5 lakh acres in green cover. And from 2017 to 2023, there has been an increase of 3.38 lakh acres in green cover,' the CM told the public representatives. Urging public representatives to undertake the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign as a public movement and spreading awareness, he stressed the importance of everyone participating in the plantation campaign 'to ensure a better environment for future generations'. He also asked public representatives to undertake the tree plantation drive along rivers, ponds, and in urban parks and open spaces. This year's plantation drive is expected to be the biggest to date, with involvement of 25 crore citizens.

Kottayam: A day after opposition parties staged statewide protests demanding her resignation, health minister Veena George visited the family of D Bindu, the 52-year-old woman who had died after a portion of a building at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam, collapsed three days ago. Bindu had been staying at the hospital to care for her daughter, who was admitted as an inpatient, when she was trapped under the debris. The minister assured the family that the govt would cover the full cost of their daughter's surgery, with further treatment decisions to be taken after a medical board meeting on Monday. She added that the state would also consider the family's other demands, including compensation and a job for Bindu's son. "As far as I'm concerned, this family's sorrow is my sorrow. I met her husband, mother, and other relatives and shared their grief. The govt will stand by them in every possible way," George said, adding that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would announce the relief measures after a state cabinet decision. Bindu's husband, Visruthan, said that the family was hopeful about govt support and stated that the family is satisfied with the interventions made by the authorities. "There's no medicine or basic supplies, forcing doctors to treat poor patients only if they bring their own. We have good doctors, but what can they do without medicines?"
