From kitchen shelf to bathroom counters: How Ayurveda is becoming a part of home routines

From kitchen shelf to bathroom counters: How Ayurveda is becoming a part of home routines

Time of India4 days ago
While this might sound surprising to many, in some homes, the traditions and practices of the past are still followed. For example, Pushpa Juyal, a 62-year-old lady from Uttarakhand, living in Delhi, does not just follow the practices of
Ayurveda
, but also encourages her grandchildren to do the same.
She wakes up before sunrise, eats a spoonful of triphala with warm water, brushes her teeth with an Ayurvedic toothpaste, and always has warm coconut oil, keeping her feeling relaxed through the day.
In fact, in the 'International Journal of Advanced Educational Research', a research paper titled 'Importance of ayurvedic medicine in modern lifestyle: A keynote review study', the authors write 'Ayurveda is based on the principle of maintaining a balance between the interrelated relationships within the body and mind.
It helps the patient to understand the benefits of knowing their body and mind and to live in an intimate relationship with nature.
Ayurvedic literature has remedies for age-related diseases like memory loss, osteoporosis, diabetic wounds, etc. for which no efficient medicine is available in modern therapy.'
Ayurveda, a practice that became confined to old scriptures, village hakims, and grandparents' advice, is now making a quiet comeback all over again.

And we are not referring to exotic potions or 3-hour massages, but just ordinary, accessible ingredients in face washes, shampoos and even teas, that are helping people include Ayurveda into their life all over again.
Ayurveda in the everyday
Ayurveda is often referred to as the 'science of life'. It does not treat a person, it heals them, and gives them a way of healthy living so that any disease never creeps its way back into their system.
And so for many people, a typical day now begins with tongue scraping using copper scrapers to remove toxins, followed by brushing with herbal toothpastes that are free from fluoride and artificial sweeteners, and more.
These pastes have ingredients like neem, babool, clove, and more, and they do not just clean the teeth, but also help keep the gums healthy.
Patanjali's Dant Kanti toothpaste, for example, is an Ayurvedic product that has entered thousands of households. It combines traditional herbs with a user-friendly format, and its popularity owes as much to affordability as to its rootedness in Indian practices.
Next comes oil pulling, a ritual that involves swishing coconut oil in the mouth for a few minutes to draw out toxins.
Though ancient, this has recently found takers among young Indians influenced by both Ayurveda and global wellness trends.
Cleansing with care
The use of face washes made from Ayurvedic herbs is another growing trend. There was a time when people did not know what 'Multani mitti' was, but thankfully, with a rise in Ayurvedic wellness, it is another raw, Earthy ingredient coming back in trend.
There are affordable and organic face washes that combine neem, tulsi, and aloe vera—a trio known for cleansing, calming, and healing skin.
Eating the Ayurvedic way
Beyond beauty and hygiene, Ayurveda is also changing and bringing back the holistic way of eating. Concepts like dinacharya (daily routine) and ritucharya (seasonal routine) have dietary patterns based on time of day and time of year, and thus we have a return to herbal teas, kadhas, and digestion-aiding churnas.
Spices like jeera, hing, ajwain, and triphala are being used not just in cooking but also in ready-to-consume products.
For example Ayurvedic brands like Patanjali have come up with ready to use options like Amla Juice, Aloe Vera Juice, and Giloy Ghanvati for busy individuals.
Conscious living with Ayurveda
Interestingly, the Ayurvedic lifestyle is not just about what to eat or apply, it is also about taking care of the home. Be it dishwashing liquids or cloth cleaning soaps, here too we see a change.
There are herbal room fresheners and even mosquito repellents made from citronella and neem oil.

Cardiac arrest vs heart attack: What is the difference?

He had a heart attack? Or may be a cardiac arrest? Aren't those the same thing? Actually, no. Not even close. Though often confused and occasionally occurring together a cardiac arrest and a heart attack are two very different medical emergencies, each requiring different responses, treatments, and outcomes. Understanding the difference could one day save a life maybe even yours. What is a heart attack? A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, happens when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked. This blockage — usually caused by a clot in one of the coronary arteries — means the heart muscle isn't getting the oxygen it needs. If not treated quickly, parts of the heart muscle can die. What is cardiac arrest? Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating altogether. There's no pumping. No blood flow. No oxygen to the brain or body. Within seconds, the person loses consciousness. If the heart isn't restarted, death follows quickly. "While a heart attack is a plumbing problem, a cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. Cardiac arrest happens when the heart's electrical system malfunctions, causing it to beat rapidly and chaotically — or to stop beating altogether. Without blood circulating to the brain, lungs, and other organs, the person gasps or stops breathing and becomes unresponsive within seconds," explains a Harvard report . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Read More Undo A heart attack is a common cause of cardiac arrest, but most heart attacks do not lead to cardiac arrest. Causes of a heart attack: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the main culprit. Plaque builds up in the arteries, narrowing them over time. A sudden blood clot can completely block an artery already narrowed by plaque. Spasms in a coronary artery can also restrict blood flow, though this is less common. Risk factors include: High cholesterol Smoking Diabetes High blood pressure Stress Poor diet and lack of exercise Causes of cardiac arrest The most common trigger? An abnormal heart rhythm, especially a deadly one called ventricular fibrillation (VFib). In VFib, the heart's electrical signals fire chaotically, stopping effective pumping. Cardiac arrest can also be caused by: Heart attacks (yes, one can cause the other) Severe arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) Heart failure Trauma (like electrocution or blunt force) Drug overdose Drowning Genetic conditions like Long QT Syndrome Heart attack symptoms Often gradual, sometimes subtle, and commonly misread — especially by women. Chest pain or pressure (may feel like squeezing, fullness, or pain) Pain radiating to the left arm, jaw, neck, or back Shortness of breath Cold sweat Nausea or vomiting Lightheadedness Fatigue Note: Some people, especially diabetics and women, may have what's called a 'silent' heart attack — with symptoms so mild or strange they're missed altogether. Cardiac arrest symptoms It's often sudden and shocking. Sudden collapse No pulse No breathing Loss of consciousness Before collapse: some may experience chest discomfort, dizziness, or racing heartbeat What's the emergency response? If someone is having a heart attack: Call emergency services immediately. Keep them calm. Loosen tight clothing. If the person isn't allergic, a 325mg aspirin can help thin the blood. Key: The faster blood flow is restored, the more of the heart muscle can be saved. Time is muscle. If someone goes into cardiac arrest: Call emergency services immediately. Start CPR (chest compressions only if you're not trained in mouth-to-mouth). Use an AED (automated external defibrillator) if available. These devices are made for the public — they walk you through the process with voice instructions. Continue CPR until help arrives or the person regains consciousness. Key: Every second matters. Brain cells start dying within minutes without oxygen. Why this matters Misunderstanding the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest can delay the right kind of help. And when it comes to your heart — every minute counts. Heart attacks are serious. Cardiac arrest is deadly unless treated immediately. Knowing which is which could mean the difference between panic and action. So, next time you hear someone mixing them up, gently correct them. Or better yet, sign up for a CPR course. Because someday, you might be the one standing there when someone's heart needs a reboot.

3 signs of iron deficiency in women that even doctors miss

Iron deficiency, affecting a significant portion of women, often goes unnoticed. Dr. Mirdamadi highlights chronic fatigue, lightheadedness, and cold extremities as key indicators frequently overlooked by doctors. He emphasizes the importance of checking ferritin levels, the storage form of iron, alongside regular iron levels to accurately diagnose and address these symptoms. Iron deficiency is a common concern in women. About 30% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 suffer from anaemia, and 37% of pregnant women also have it, according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) statistics. Iron deficiency often goes unnoticed, especially in the initial stages. Dr. Pedi Mirdamadi, a licensed naturopathic doctor and holistic nutritionist specializing in functional medicine in San Diego, has explained the 3 crucial signs of iron deficiency that even doctors tend to overlook. 'While most doctors only check iron levels, that may not be enough when it comes to addressing these symptoms. This is because it's as equally as important to check ferritin or the storage form of iron. Because having low ferritin despite normal levels of iron can still be contributing to these symptoms,' he said. Let's take a look. What is iron deficiency Iron deficiency occurs when the body lacks sufficient iron. Iron plays a crucial role in the production of red blood cells. These red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which carries oxygen throughout the body. Iron deficiency impairs the body's ability to produce enough hemoglobin, which results in a condition called iron deficiency anemia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Chronic fatigue Feeling constantly drained is a crucial sign of low iron levels, yet it is often missed in diagnosis. Dr. Mirdamadi notes that low energy should not be dismissed. As chronic fatigue is a symptom of many health concerns, chances of it getting mistaken for other ailments are possible. Some even attribute exhaustion to stress or lack of sleep. The most important thing to understand is that chronic fatigue is never a good indicator of health. Feeling lightheaded or dizzy One common complaint people with iron deficiency have is lightheadedness or dizziness . If you feel lightheaded while standing up quickly or during physical activity, it could be due to iron deficiency. When the iron levels in the body is low, hemoglobin production is affected, which limits the transport of oxygen to the cells. This sign is often mistaken for dehydration. Cold hands and feet Women often complain of cold hands and feet, even in warm environments. This could be a crucial sign of low iron. A deficiency in iron affects circulation and the body's ability to regulate temperature. People often miss this symptom or attribute it to poor circulation, without investigating iron levels. Soha Ali Khan Slays Functional Training Circuit 'Low iron levels can be so easily missed because most doctors assess iron status by looking at a blood count and serum iron. Ferritin is the storage form of iron and is very important to measure if there are any symptoms of fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, or easily bruising,' the doctor notes.

Shares of tiny Healthcare Triangle Inc . stood out as the most actively-traded name on US exchanges on Thursday, another example of how investor exuberance is fueling wild gyrations throughout the equity market. The little-known healthcare information technology company saw its stock price more than double to just above five cents, with over 3 billion shares changing hands. That was equivalent to about 15% of the total shares traded on US exchanges for the day, data compiled by Bloomberg show. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo After surging 138% at the open, Healthcare Triangle's shares closed up 115%, with no apparent news to spark the eye-popping move. Shares of Opendoor Technologies, which shot higher on Monday, were also notable for massive trading volumes. While the number of stocks being drawn into the frenzy is growing, the rallies have been volatile and often short lived, raising questions about whether the companies will be able to take advantage of their elevated share prices to raise fresh capital, the way that AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and GameStop Corp. did during the original meme stock craze of 2021.
