Luna stars as USA reach Gold Cup final
The USA will meet with the winner of Wednesday's other semi-final, between Mexico and Honduras, in Sunday's final in Houston.
Luna, an exciting talent who plays for Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer, put the USA ahead in the 4th minute when a Luca de la Torre shot was parried out and the 21-year-old pounced to slot home.
The winger, who came up through the ranks of lower division football in Texas, then doubled the advantage in the 15th minute with a brilliant, individual goal.
Luna picked up the ball in space in midfield and dribbled goalwards, skipping a challenge before firing home from over 20 yards out.
Guatemala striker Rubio Rubin had an effort saved by USA keeper Matt Freese and then another disallowed for offside to the frustration of his team's large and noisy travelling support.
Sebastian Berhalter went close to a third just before the break with a free-kick which deflected off the wall and was well saved by Kenderson Navarro.
Mauricio Pochettino's USA, who came into the tournament on the back of a four-game losing streak, began to come under more and more pressure from a lively Guatemala after the interval.
That pressure intensified after the Central Americans scored in the 80th minute when Arquimides Ordonez dribbled into the box and 18-year-old Boston-born Olger Escobar fired home.
The home fans held their breath in stoppage time when Jose Morales drilled a low shot from the edge of the box but Freese did well get down and push the ball wide.
Luna's performances will bolster his chances of making the squad for the World Cup next year even when regular starters such as Christian Pulisic return.
"Every single one of these players think about it the same way I do, that this is the number one dream we had as a kid and we are going to fight to have as many chances to wear (this shirt) as we can," said Luna.
The Californian, of Mexican heritage, was praised by teammate Berhalter for his two crucial goals.
"He does stuff like that, scoring two goals like that in a semi-final, it is why he's him and he's one of the best players in MLS and one of the best players here," he said.

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami in talks to extend contract
IN SUMMER 2024, Lionel Messi emphasized that Inter Miami would be the last club he played with in his illustrious career. Now, with his contract set to expire at the end of the MLS season, the Herons are looking to extend Messi's run on the pitch. ESPN reported Friday that Messi and Inter Miami remain in negotiations to extend the contract of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner beyond 2025. Messi signed with Miami in July 2023 on a 2 1/2-year Designated-Player contract. With the club set to open a new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, for the 2026 season, Inter Miami wants Messi to take part in the housewarming party. Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, told ESPN in June that his club would do whatever it takes to keep Messi with the Herons. "I previously said that my wish, my dream would be for the No. 10 to inaugurate our new stadium in March. This is a decision that rests on Messi," Mas said. He added: "I always said that he is a competitive animal, he wants to win. I hope we can raise many trophies together here at Inter Miami in the coming years. Here, we're just waiting to be able to give the fans the good news about Lionel Messi." Since joining the club, Messi led Inter Miami to its first-ever trophies, including the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters' Shield while setting a record for most points in a single season. Miami also advanced to the round of 16 of the current FIFA Club World Cup, after taking second in Group A, but fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stage. In 38 regular-season MLS games, Messi has 31 goals and 22 assists. He also claimed the 2024 league MVP. — REUTERS

Soccer-Defiant Wales wear underdog tag with pride ahead of Women's Euro debut
Soccer Football - Women's World Cup - Women's European Qualifiers - Republic of Ireland v Wales - Dublin Arena, Dublin, Ireland - December 3, 2024 Wales players celebrate qualifying for the Women's Euro 2025 REUTERS/Clodagh Kilcoyne (Reuters) -Wales know that little is expected of them when they take on 2017 champions Netherlands in their opening Women's Euro Group D game on Saturday, but they sent a defiant message to anyone prepared to underestimate them as they make their tournament debut. The Welsh were handed one of the toughest draws possible when they were grouped with reigning champions England, France and the Dutch, but after qualifying for the tournament they are not just in Switzerland to make up the numbers. Canadian-born coach Rhian Wilkinson, whose mother hailed from Wales, brought in her long-time Canada international teammate Diane Matheson to talk to her players on Thursday, and the rallying cry had the desired effect. "Diana said it last night -- it's a privilege to be the underdogs and that's the attitude we're going in with. Underestimate us all you want but we know that we're ready for the fight, we're ready for each game and we're ready to be here, be present and take on each team as it comes," Wales captain Angharad James told reporters on Friday. Wales know they will be up against it when they take on a tough Dutch team in Lucerne on Saturday but, no matter how the game goes, the squad will still see their participation as a great success for Welsh football. "I think for me personally it's been a very long journey, and for most of the group too. It's been something that we've always strived to achieve and we've always come up short but not anymore -- we're here," James said. "To see the Welsh flag and to see Wales being on the biggest stage of all is truly something that I didn't know if I'd be able to experience personally, and to be here today is an honour," she added.
