Brad Marchand haunts Leafs once again with Panthers' overtime winner in Game 3. ‘He's tenacious'

History will say, and prognosticators could have predicted, that Brad Marchand got the Florida Panthers back in the series against the
Toronto Maple Leafs
.
The ex-Boston Bruin shot towards the slot, and got a favourable deflection off the body of Morgan Rielly, and the Panthers now hope they've turned around their second-round series with a 5-4 overtime win.
Marchand is a noted Leafs killer whose success against the Maple Leafs dates back to the
2013 seven-game series
featuring the Phil Kessel-era Leafs. He has 12 goals and 21 assists in 31 playoff games against Toronto.
'His work ethic, he's hard on pucks, he's tenacious,' said Florida teammate Sam Reinhart. 'Players like that shine at this time of year.'

The Leafs have never beaten a team with Marchand on it in a post-season series.
'Marchand adds creativity to his line,' said
Leafs head coach Craig Berube
. 'He's a good player, makes plays, subtle little things he does on the ice. Makes them a more dangerous line.'
His Bruins beat the Leafs in 2013, 2018, 2019 and 2024, each series going to seven games.
'He plays hard, always plays hard,' said Leafs centre John Tavares.
On a night of funny bounces, Marchand made sure the Panthers got the last one with his winner off Rielly, who had actually forced overtime with a lucky bounce of his own.
'That's how pucks are going in right now; it's not just this series,' said Rielly.
'In overtime, we had our opportunities. It's a bounce, that's what happens in overtime,' said Berube.

The Maple Leafs, of course, hope Friday night's setback was just a blip.
'We're happy to be up in the series,' said Rielly. 'Tonight wasn't the result we wanted, but there are good things going on. We'll try to clean up the areas that need to be addressed. We're in a good position. It's important to stay focussed.'
Any way you look at it, it's a battle. A battle for space, for bounces, for earning the puck, for taking a hit, and scoring when it matters.
Matthew Knies
scored 23 seconds in the game — the fourth-fastest start to a playoff game in Leafs history. Tavares scored twice, tipping a Mitch Marner shot each time to establish a 3-1 lead.
But it was Rielly who forced the overtime in the third period after Florida had asserted itself in the middle frame. Rielly got a lucky bounce after being the victim of a bad bounce in the second that helped the Panthers get back into the game.
'They're a good team,' said Tavares. 'We didn't execute as well playing through the pressure. We battled hard in the third, got some pressure back, earned an opportunity. Overtime just didn't go our way.'
Rielly simply took a shot — the lesson all teams ought to learn from in the tight-checking post-season. It was a snap shot from 47 feet that Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky got a pad on, but the rebound hit defenceman Seth Jones and bounced into the net with 9:04 remaining in the third.
Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll, left, and defenceman Brandon Carlo can't stop a goal going in from the Panthers' Jonah Gadjovich during the second period of Game 3.
It was a night of close calls and lucky bounces that will have both goalies under the microscope. The Leafs came ever-so-close to taking a 3-0 series lead with overtime chances by William Nylander and Knies but Bobrovsky had his best game of the series.
Joseph Woll's game will be dissected for ages, the Leafs netminder allowing three goals over nine minutes 54 second period that turned a 3-1 Toronto lead into a 4-3 deficit.
'I thought he was really good,' Berube said of Woll. 'I didn't love the fourth goal, but other than that I thought he was solid.'
Woll took over the net halfway through Game 1 of the series when Anthony Stolarz left the game,
suffering an apparent concussion
. Stolarz did not accompany the team to Florida and is an unlikely to be available for Sunday's Game 4 in Sunrise, Fla.
'Thought we played a strong game, especially in the third and overtime,' said Woll. 'The difference is the bounce one way. That's how playoff games go. Just got to reset. You just shake it off. Bounces go both ways. That's hockey.'
The Leafs are still in the driver's seat. Teams that are up two games to one have won 391 series all-time, losing 177 (a .688 winning percentage).
Rookie Dennis Hildeby backed up Woll for Game 3 after veteran Matt Murray had done so in Game 2. Murray was sick, Berube said.
'Whatever happens, we have to keep going, keep playing, keep pushing,' said Tavares. 'We know we can be better. We have to be.'

Dolphins tight end Darren Waller to begin 2025 training camp on physically unable to perform list

Looks like the Miami Dolphins plan to ease in Darren Waller slowly. The recently unretired tight end will begin the 2025 training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list alongside offensive lineman Liam Eichenburg, the team announced late Tuesday afternoon. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu was also placed on the non-football injury list. Waller last suited up for the New York Giants in 2023. An early July trade brought the one-time Pro Bowler to the Dolphins. In his first appearance donning the aqua and orange, Waller mentioned the presence of offensive coordinator Frank Smith played a key role in the decision to return to the NFL. Smith was Waller's tight end coach during his back-to-back breakout years in 2019 and 2020. 'Frank is my guy, man,' Waller said Tuesday, adding that 'some of my best football memories overall' came during his time with Smith. 'When I got claimed off the Ravens practice squad in 2018, I got to the Raiders and he was my tight ends coach. He me at the door and one of the first things he was interested in was what do I need as a man in my newfound sobriety.' That interaction 'struck' Waller and the two began to build a relationship beyond X's and O's — although that part certainly wasn't lacking. The eight-year veteran called the ability to 'reconnect' with Smith an 'amazing' opportunity. 'Just his knowledge of the game,' Waller continued. 'The culture that he created not only in our room but just with how he interacted with players I thought was rare in coaches I had seen to that point. Some of the best years in my career were with him in the room and just , so to be able to reconnect with him is amazing.' In a flurry of other moves, the Dolphins waived quarterback Brett Gabbert and signed offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill. A 66 game starter with the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans, Brunskill brings experience and versatility to an offensive line room in need of depth. The six-year veteran registered the majority of his snaps at right guard yet has suited up at every position along the line.

Panthers fans divided after Ivan Cleary forced to axe 'grand final hero' for Tigers clash

Panthers fans are questioning the long-term plan for the NRL club's back-line after Paul Alamoti was the odd-man out when Ivan Cleary announced his team to take on the Wests Tigers on Tuesday. Cleary has named son Nathan to make his return after a one-week rest, along with co-captain Isaah Yeo. Izack Tago is also back in the centres after a one-game suspension, which has seen Alamoti dropped to 18th man. Alamoti has been a revelation since switching from the Bulldogs to Panthers last year, and has thrived under Cleary's leadership. A Test international with Tonga, the outside-back scored the match-sealing try in the 2024 grand final as the Panthers beat the Storm for their fourth-straight premiership. But he's been in and out of Penrith's first-grade side in 2025 due to a selection squeeze created by the form of others. Between Rounds 13 and 18, Alamoti only played one game at the top level, with coach Cleary preferring a back-line of Tago, Brian To'o, Casey McLean and Thomas Jenkins. Alamoti earned a recall in Round 19 and performed brilliantly in wins against Parramatta and Souths. But Tago's return from suspension and To'o avoiding a fresh injury has seen Alamoti go out again for the Round 21 game against the Tigers. McLean and Jenkins have seemingly cemented their sports at centre and wing on the left, after McLean also had a stint in reserve-grade earlier this season. Jenkins has taken his opportunity with both hands and is enjoying his finest season to date. Panthers fans divided over Paul Alamoti's axing But debate has erupted about what Cleary will do moving forward. Many believe Alamoti is a part of the Panthers' best 17, and is too good not to be playing first-grade. "With Izack Tago returning from suspension, Alamoti goes to 18th man," a surprised Joel Caine said on SEN radio on Tuesday. "He was the grand final hero in a lot of ways." On social media, Panthers fans questioned whether it might be worth giving To'o some more time to rest considering he banged his troublesome knee against the Rabbitohs. To'o was rested for the game against Parramatta two weeks ago, which came just days after the State of Origin decider. He made his return in Round 20, but limped off after copping a knock to the knee. He later insisted it wasn't anything serious, and was named to take his place on the wing on Tuesday. One person wrote online: "Should've rested To'o. Need him fit and firing for finals. Allows Alamoti to remain on the wing and Tago back into the centres." Another predicted: "Tom Jenkins will be the first one dropped pending a quiet game or so - Alamoti is a first grader at almost every NRL team." While a third addd: "I do not know what will happen in the next period of time, but it would not surprise me to see Alamoti back in 1st grade in the near future." It's a good backline that can leave Alimoti out. — Amarillo🏆🏆🏆🏆 (@Amarillo1942237) July 22, 2025 He's definitely one of our better outside backs - Tom Jenkins will be the first one dropped pending a quiet game or so - Alamoti is a first grader at almost every NRL team — Sport Season (@NRLFan1967) July 22, 2025 Should've rested To'o. Need him fit and firing for finals. Allows Alamoti to remain on the wing and Tago back into the centres — Adamdiffey (@adamdiffey) July 22, 2025 Brian To'o pushing through the pain for Panthers To'o's season has been plagued by injuries, starting when he was forced to miss the first game in Las Vegas due to a hamstring issue. The 26-year-old has played only eight games for the Panthers in 2025 and was under an injury cloud for the second and third State of Origin games - with hamstring and knee problems respectively. RELATED: Souths player speaks out after post-match moment with Latrell Teammate responds amid calls for NRL stars to cop Origin ban Speaking last week, the star winger declared it's his job to push through the pain barrier to help the Panthers secure a finals berth. Cleary's side have made an incredible resurgence from last on the ladder to sixth. But with seven rounds remaining, they're only three points ahead of the Dolphins in ninth and Roosters in 10th. "I'll always back myself to keep going," To'o said. "It's part of the job, you'll always be busted and bruised, but never broken."

Caitlin Clark's 3-Point Contest replacement announced

The post Caitlin Clark's 3-Point Contest replacement announced appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Indiana Fever have already faced plenty of adversity during the 2025 WNBA season. Most recently, it is another injury to guard Caitlin Clark just days before the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game. The WNBA has finally revealed which player will take Clark's place in one of this weekend's important skills challenges. Fever guard Lexie Hull will replace superstar Caitlin Clark in the 3-Point Contest at the 2025 WNBA All-Star Weekend. Hull is an excellent pick to replace Clark. She may not be a volume shooter in 2025, but Hull is incredibly efficient from behind the three-point line. She has a 46.8% shooting percentage from downtown and was the most efficient three-point shooter in the W for most of the season. Hull will go up against Sabrina Ionescu, Kelsey Plum, Allisha Gray, and Sonia Citron in the 3-Point Contest. Clark announced on Thursday that she will not participate at the 2025 WNBA All-Star Weekend because of a right groin injury. She suffered the injury in the final minutes of Indiana's win against Connecticut at TD Garden in Boston on Tuesday night. Clark will not participate in the All-Star Game itself and will be replaced by Mystics guard Brittney Sykes. WNBA legend Nancy Lieberman sends heartfelt message to Caitlin Clark amid injury concerns One WNBA legend sent a heartfelt message to Clark while she battles this new injury. Nancy Lieberman sent a message to Clark from a youth basketball camp in Texas on Thursday. 'Hi, Caitlin, it's a basketball camp in Dallas, and we've got tons of children, and I just want to personally say thank you,' Lieberman said in the video posted on X, formerly Twitter. 'Thank you for everything you've done for the game. Thank you for our friendship. I so admire you as a human being. You're epic as the basketball player, but we're praying that you will heal quickly.' Lieberman did her best to encourage Clark even though she will miss this year's All-Star Game. 'I know it's disappointing, because All-Star's here in your hometown right now. You've changed the game, so many people love you,' It is currently unknown how long Clark will be out with this new groin the Fever need to continue stacking wins, with or without Clark. Next up for Indiana is another road trip to New York to face the Liberty on Tuesday night.
