'New chapter': Govt launches UMEED portal for Waqf property management
The UMEED central portal, short for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995 will serve as a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties.
"The UMEED portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help the common Muslims, particularly women and children," Rijiju said after launching the UMEED central portal.
The portal, developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was officially inaugurated in the presence of Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian.
Calling it a historic step, Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED central portal is more than just a technological upgrade.
"It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for the poor Muslims, for whom, it was originally meant," he said.
Later, in a post on X, he said, "A momentous occasion to launch the 'UMEED' Central Portal (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency & Development Act, 1995) in New Delhi today. MoS @GeorgekurianBjp, officials of @MOMAIndia, States, UTs & Waqf Boards attended online. It's a big step towards better administration & management of Waqf properties across India." The portal aims to improve greater transparency, accountability, and public participation. The key features of the portal include the creation of a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties.
It also includes an online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness and transparent leasing and usage tracking.
The portal also involves integration with GIS mapping and other e-governance tools and public access to verified records and reports.
Addressing the gathering, Kurian said the portal is a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring the Waqf administration closer to the people.
"The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed for," he said.
Ministry of Minority Affairs Secretary Chandra Shekhar Kumar said he expected the UMEED portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that the Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community.
Earlier this week, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board had opposed the launch of the portal in view of the petitions against the Waqf (Amendment) Act being pending before the Supreme Court.
President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani said the new Waqf law introduced by the government is currently under consideration in the Supreme Court and added that all Muslim organisations have rejected it.
"Opposition parties, human rights organisations, as well as Sikh, Christian, and other minority communities have also declared it unacceptable. However, it is unfortunate that despite this, the government is launching the "Waqf Umeed portal" from June 6 and is making the registration of waqf properties mandatory through it. This action is entirely illegal and clearly constitutes contempt of court," the AIMPLB had said in its statement.

He also said such statements humiliate the country on international platforms. 'We fail to understand why Bilawal is so keen on appeasing India," Akram said, per the report. The PTI spokesperson also said that Bilawal was proving time and again that he lacked political wisdom, vision, and understanding of regional geopolitics. 'Bilawal has become a symbol of confusion and contradiction in Pakistan's foreign policy discourse," he said. 'The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on the legacy of Kashmir, but today, Bilawal is betraying that legacy by pursuing political gains at the expense of Kashmiri blood," he added. Both LeT and JeM have been banned by Pakistan, according to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta), while Saeed, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind, is currently serving a 33-year sentence for terror financing, and Azhar, a UN-designated global terrorist, has been proscribed by Nacta. Bilawal said that cases prosecuted against these 'individuals" were those related to Pakistan, such as terrorist financing. However, he noted that prosecuting them for cross-border terrorism was difficult due to what he claimed was 'noncompliance" from Delhi. 'India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements that require that conviction to take place," he said. 'It's important to present evidence within these courts, for people to come over from India to testify, to put up with whatever the counter-accusations will be." 'If India is willing to be cooperative in that process, I am sure there will be no hurdle in extraditing any individual of concern," Bilawal added. He also expressed concern about India's vow to pursue terrorists, calling it a 'new abnormal". 'This does not serve the interests of Pakistan, and it does not serve the interests of India," he added. Pressed on the whereabouts of Saeed and Azhar, Bilawal stated that the former was incarcerated, while Islamabad believes the latter is in Afghanistan. 'It is factually not correct that Hafiz Saeed is a free man; he is in the custody of the Pakistani state," he maintained, stating that Islamabad has been unable to arrest Azhar. 'It is our belief that he is in Afghanistan," Bilawal stated. 'If and when the Indian government shares information that he is on Pakistani soil, we will be more than happy to arrest him," he said. What Akhilesh Yadav's new base of operations in Azamgarh reveals about SP plans
A new residence-cum-office that Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated in his party's stronghold Azamgarh last week appears to be part of the Samajwadi Party (SP) president's larger repositioning with the 2027 Assembly elections in mind. On Thursday, the SP chief inaugurated the house that has been named the PDA Bhavan after the party's strategy of reaching out to the 'Pichhda (OBCs), Dalits, and Alpsankhayk (minorities)' in an attempt to expand its electoral base and be more than just a Muslim-Yadav party. With this, Akhilesh has also signalled his interest in maintaining a personal base of operations in Azamgarh, where the party won all 10 Assembly seats in 2022. The district's two Lok Sabha constituencies, Azamgarh and Lalganj, have also historically voted for the SP, which currently holds both of them. Beyond the symbolism, the new building will also smoothen operations for the SP in Azamgarh, where earlier the party operated out of a single room and did not have adequate space to host senior leaders. The importance of Azamgarh goes beyond just the district. It is part of eastern UP (Purvanchal), where the BJP took a hit in the 2022 Assembly elections and the SP made a gain of 39 seats, jumping from 16 in 2017 to 55, and the BJP's tally reduced from 114 in 2017 to 86. These are the gains Akhilesh wants to hold on to as he prepares for the 2027 battle. 'This development shows that Akhilesh is going to make Azamgarh a centre of party activities in eastern UP,' said an SP leader. 'He will frequently visit here, travel to adjoining areas, and hold meetings personally.' SP district president Hawaldar Yadav said Azamgarh had 'only a few hotels, but they lack the adequate arrangements and facilities'. 'Due to these issues, Akhilesh ji used to avoid night stay in Azamgarh. Last time he had an overnight stay here in 2019 after he was elected MP from here,' said the SP leader. And for the party, the goal remains clear: make Akhilesh the Chief Minister in 2027. For that to happen, Azamgarh and the larger Purvanchal region have to deliver for the party. During the inauguration, Akhilesh also signalled broader aspirations, with Azamgarh at the centre. 'Patna and Lucknow are almost the same distance from Azamgarh,' he said, hinting that the party wants to play an active role in helping the RJD in the Bihar Assembly elections later this year. SP gets going The all-important test for the party will be the Assembly elections two years down the line, and it has gradually started making moves to get into shape for the battle with the BJP. In July, it launched a year-long drive to reach out to Pasmanda Muslims and consolidate its core Muslim-Yadav base. The party plans to hold meetings with Pasmandas in all 403 Assembly constituencies, followed by district-level conventions, and finally, a state-level public meeting will be organised when the Assembly elections approach. The party has also devised a strategy to focus on 108 Assembly seats that it has lost in the last three Assembly elections. It has appointed observers for each of these constituencies, and they have been asked to submit their reports to Akhilesh within a set timeframe. Sources said the observers had already made at least a couple of visits to each of these seats in the past fortnight and held meetings with the district office-bearers and prominent leaders there. The SP is also calibrating its policies and strategies for various social groups. Akhilesh has promised that if voted to power his administration will install a statue of Raja Suheldev on the Gomti riverfront in Lucknow. This is a signal to the Rajbhar community, which is estimated to make up 18% of the electorate in eastern UP. The party has also promised to build a memorial dedicated to former Congress MP Shivdayal Chaurasia, who was a staunch social justice advocate and worked for the uplift of Dalits and OBCs. The SP is also fine-tuning its strategy to reach out to women, the driving force behind the victors in recent state elections, promising direct money transfers into their bank accounts, along with free mobile phones, laptops, and skill development programmes.

Police remove controversial signboards barring entry of non-local Muslims in Mulshi
Three signboards announcing that the entry of non-local Muslims is not allowed in a few villages of Mulshi taluka have been taken down by the police following complaints by civil rights organisations, Pune (Rural) superintendent of police Sandeep Singh Gill confirmed on Sunday. 'We have removed the objectionable boards after holding separate meetings with PUCL representatives and the gram panchayats of three villages. The matter is under review,' said Gill. PUCL member Milind Champanerkar said the group had also written to Baramati MP Supriya Sule and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, demanding action. The two organisations, in a joint complaint submitted to the state chief secretary, Pune district collector, and senior police officers, alleged that the banners targeting Muslims who do not belong to the particular area were put up in many areas, including religious places, without any legal sanction. They also alleged that several bakeries and scrap shops owned by Muslims had shut down due to pressure from the fringe elements, and the local police failed to check it.
