What Akhilesh Yadav's new base of operations in Azamgarh reveals about SP plans
On Thursday, the SP chief inaugurated the house that has been named the PDA Bhavan after the party's strategy of reaching out to the 'Pichhda (OBCs), Dalits, and Alpsankhayk (minorities)' in an attempt to expand its electoral base and be more than just a Muslim-Yadav party. With this, Akhilesh has also signalled his interest in maintaining a personal base of operations in Azamgarh, where the party won all 10 Assembly seats in 2022. The district's two Lok Sabha constituencies, Azamgarh and Lalganj, have also historically voted for the SP, which currently holds both of them.
Beyond the symbolism, the new building will also smoothen operations for the SP in Azamgarh, where earlier the party operated out of a single room and did not have adequate space to host senior leaders. The importance of Azamgarh goes beyond just the district. It is part of eastern UP (Purvanchal), where the BJP took a hit in the 2022 Assembly elections and the SP made a gain of 39 seats, jumping from 16 in 2017 to 55, and the BJP's tally reduced from 114 in 2017 to 86. These are the gains Akhilesh wants to hold on to as he prepares for the 2027 battle.
'This development shows that Akhilesh is going to make Azamgarh a centre of party activities in eastern UP,' said an SP leader. 'He will frequently visit here, travel to adjoining areas, and hold meetings personally.'
SP district president Hawaldar Yadav said Azamgarh had 'only a few hotels, but they lack the adequate arrangements and facilities'.
'Due to these issues, Akhilesh ji used to avoid night stay in Azamgarh. Last time he had an overnight stay here in 2019 after he was elected MP from here,' said the SP leader.
And for the party, the goal remains clear: make Akhilesh the Chief Minister in 2027. For that to happen, Azamgarh and the larger Purvanchal region have to deliver for the party.
During the inauguration, Akhilesh also signalled broader aspirations, with Azamgarh at the centre. 'Patna and Lucknow are almost the same distance from Azamgarh,' he said, hinting that the party wants to play an active role in helping the RJD in the Bihar Assembly elections later this year.
SP gets going
The all-important test for the party will be the Assembly elections two years down the line, and it has gradually started making moves to get into shape for the battle with the BJP.
In July, it launched a year-long drive to reach out to Pasmanda Muslims and consolidate its core Muslim-Yadav base. The party plans to hold meetings with Pasmandas in all 403 Assembly constituencies, followed by district-level conventions, and finally, a state-level public meeting will be organised when the Assembly elections approach.
The party has also devised a strategy to focus on 108 Assembly seats that it has lost in the last three Assembly elections. It has appointed observers for each of these constituencies, and they have been asked to submit their reports to Akhilesh within a set timeframe. Sources said the observers had already made at least a couple of visits to each of these seats in the past fortnight and held meetings with the district office-bearers and prominent leaders there.
The SP is also calibrating its policies and strategies for various social groups. Akhilesh has promised that if voted to power his administration will install a statue of Raja Suheldev on the Gomti riverfront in Lucknow. This is a signal to the Rajbhar community, which is estimated to make up 18% of the electorate in eastern UP. The party has also promised to build a memorial dedicated to former Congress MP Shivdayal Chaurasia, who was a staunch social justice advocate and worked for the uplift of Dalits and OBCs.
The SP is also fine-tuning its strategy to reach out to women, the driving force behind the victors in recent state elections, promising direct money transfers into their bank accounts, along with free mobile phones, laptops, and skill development programmes.

HC reserves orders on 9 writs seeking judicial probe into Group-1 exams
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court single bench of Justice Namavarapu Rajeshwar Rao on Monday 'reserved orders' on nine writs filed by unsuccessful candidates, who were unable to get a rank in the Group-1 Main exam, seeking a direction to order a judicial probe into the entire selection process. The judge heard nine writs filed by Parmesh Matta and others. Vidya Sagar, KS Murthy and Rachna, senior counsels argued for the petitioners and sought judicial intervention into the action of the TGPSC in conducting the most coveted Group-1 competitive examination in the most haphazard manner, alleging massive illegalities and in sheer violation of rules. Vidya Sagar contended that the TGPSC had not conducted the exam in a fair and transparent manner because, any constitutional body, which holds a competitive exam, first and foremost, notifies each instruction by way of a Gazette.. unless this process is done, a statutory body cannot hold an exam , but here in this case, the TGPSC didn't speak about three rounds of evaluation, moderation method, re-evaluation, which itself speaks about the haphazard manner of conducting the exam. Rachna, in the last hearing, contended that the TGPSC had informed the court it had grossly erred in issuing two hall-ticket numbers to candidates. This had created confusion among the candidates, who got selected in the Preliminary. Moreover, unqualified evaluators had corrected the answer papers of the candidates, who wrote the exam in 'Telugu medium' because of which there is a huge variation in the pass percentage between the candidates, who appeared in English and Telugu--English medium 30% and Telugu medium 18%. This action of TGPSC was to demean the Telugu candidates. The biometrics system was not properly used… the contention of the TGPSC that all CCTV cameras installed at the exam centres had a centralised surveillance system was a suspecting aspect. Reddy at a public meeting (election campaign-2024) 'Jana Jatara Sabha' on May 5 at Prakasam Stadium, Kothagudem, stated that if the BJP comes to power, it will scrap the SC, ST and BC reservations. During the hearing, T Niranjan Reddy, senior counsel appearing for CM, had vehemently opposed contentions of counsel for the petitioner, contending the complaint filed before the lower court was not maintainable and should be dismissed; Venkateshwarulu was not eligible to file the complaint on ground BJP, being a national party, had not given its consent. The counsel for the petitioner had not furnished any document/ letter received from the top BJP brass, giving consent. PM Modi in Namibia for final leg of diplomatic tour; JD(U) to launch campaign on voter list revision
In the last leg of his eight-day and five-nation tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Namibia on Tuesday in what is the first visit by an India PM in 27 years. In Namibia, Modi will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and 'chart a new roadmap for cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples, regions and the wider Global South,' the PM said. Modi will also address a joint session of the Namibian Parliament. During the visit, there will also be an agreement to introduce India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the African country. The UPI system is already active in other foreign countries, including Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, France and the UAE. Prior to visiting Namibia, Modi had travelled to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Brazil. In Brazil, Modi had attended the BRICS 2025 Summit, where the Pahalgam attack and India's response through Operation Sindoor were discussed. JD(U) awareness campaign on voter list revision With the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls drawing flak from the Opposition across India and facing legal challenges in the Supreme Court, the state's ruling Janata Dal (United) is set to launch a state-wide cycle rally to raise awareness among voters on Tuesday. While addressing an organisational meeting of party leaders, JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha said that party workers will go door-to-door to inform voters about the SIR process and provide help in completing the enumeration forms that require voters to submit proof of citizenship. Jha said the campaign would cover all panchayats. BJP attacks TMC over law college rape In West Bengal, the BJP's Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said he would release the names of 50 leaders of the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) student wing who are allegedly targeting pupils, specifically women, like Monojit Mishra, the prime accused in the rape case at a law college in south Kolkata. Adhikari alleged that all these leaders belong to the 'bhaipo (nephew) gang', an apparent reference to TMC's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who is the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. 'I will release on Tuesday afternoon the names of at least 50 members of 'bhaipo gang' who are running havoc on the campuses,' he said. TMC spokesperson Jaiprakash Majumdar, however, rejected Adhikari's allegations as false and asserted that the party has zero tolerance towards crimes against women. 'His words should not be taken seriously. Such claims have no basis. In fact, Adhikari had given similar deadlines in the past but ended up with egg on his face every time.
