Kyle Juszczyk's positive Christian McCaffrey update is nice, but the real test remains
There may not be a more impactful aspect of the San Francisco 49ers season than the health of running back Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey missed all but four games last season because of Achilles and knee injuries, raising questions about the 29-year-old's ability to return at full strength in 2025. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk had a positive update on McCaffrey while talking with the Athletic's Vic Tafur at the American Century Championship. "Christian is arguably the best player in the NFL," Juszczyk told Tafur. "He was the offensive player of the year two years ago. He changes everything, and he looks incredible. He looks so healthy, he looks so explosive." No news on McCaffrey was good news through the offseason program. The star running back was a full participant throughout OTAs and gave enough reps for his teammate to feel good about where he's at going into training camp. While the vote of confidence from Juszczyk is good, it's also important to note that a teammate isn't liable to tell a reporter McCaffrey didn't look good. Even if we take Juszczyk at his word, getting through OTAs isn't the real test for the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year. We'll get a good idea of where McCaffrey is when training camp begins, pads come on, and the reps are more real. McCaffrey, Juszczyk and the rest of the 49ers veterans report to camp on July 22, with the first practice slated for July 24. 2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: TE Trey McBride
We will preview every player on the Cardinals roster leading up to training camp. This is about TE Trey McBride. The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team. Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook. This focuses on tight end Trey McBride. Trey McBride background, 2024 season McBride enters his fourth NFL season, all with the Cardinals. He was a second-round pick in 2022 out of Colorado State. In three years, he has become one of the premier pass-catching tight ends in the NFL. After 29 receptions for 291 yards as a rookie, he set the franchise single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 81 in 2023 to go with 825 yards and three touchdowns. He bested that in 2024, catching 111 passes, setting a new record, for 1,146 yards (the second-highest single-season total by a tight end) and two touchdowns. He was selected as a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career. Trey McBride 2025 contract details, cap hit This offseason, he signed a four-year, $76 million contract extension, becoming the highest-paid tight end in league history, at least for a couple of weeks until the 49ers' George Kittle signed a larger deal. He got a $16.75 million signing bonus and will make a fully guaranteed salary of more than $5.4 million in 2025. His cap hit will be less than $9.6 million. Questions he faces, roster outlook There is no question about his roster outlook. He is a lock for the roster and is the unquestioned TE1 in the offense. The only questions he faces for the upcoming season are 1) can he keep up the rate of his production and 2) can he take the next step and produce touchdowns? He only has six receiving touchdowns in his career and only had two last season. He did rush for a score and recover a fumble in the end zone for another, but to be one of the greats, he has to find his way more consistently into the end zone. Luis Sharpe, longtime Cardinals left tackle and 3-time Pro Bowl pick, dies at 65
Former Arizona Cardinals left tackle Luis Sharpe, a three-time Pro Bowl selection during his 13 seasons with the franchise from 1982-1994, has died. He was 65. Sharpe's wife, Tameka Williams-Sharpe, posted news of his death on Facebook on Saturday, July 12. 'With deep sorrow and abiding love, I share that my beloved husband, Luis Sharpe, has passed away,' she wrote. 'His strength, love, and faith were a light to all who knew him. I am grateful for every moment we shared and for the many prayers and kindnesses extended to our family. "Though my heart is heavy, I trust that Luis is now resting in God's eternal peace. Please continue to keep our family lifted in prayer.' Sharpe, who was born in Havana, Cuba, was a first-round pick out of UCLA by the then-St. Louis Cardinals in 1982 and stayed with the franchise when it moved to Arizona. He is widely regarded as the best left tackle in club history. Although Sharpe excelled on the football field, he battled alcohol and drug addiction, which only got worse in the years following his NFL career. He was arrested multiple times, jailed, and shot twice during drug transactions. Sharpe had been sober, however, for the past eight years and told the Detroit Free Press during an interview in December that the turning point in his life was the intensive Bible study he began in prison. 'As an athlete, my self-esteem came from the applause of the fans and all of the accolades I received – that's what filled me,' Sharpe told the paper. 'But after being homeless, penniless and hopeless, I have more peace and more joy than I did during my NFL days because God has taken my mess and turned it into a message.' Sharpe and his daughter Rebekah had teamed together to address the drug and mental health crises by sharing their story about addiction and its effect on their lives. They had been serving as ambassadors for Hall of Fame Health, an affiliate of the Pro Football Hall of Fame that aims to positively impact the health of former NFL players and communities across the country.
