Film crews spotted for Woman of Substance remake
Crews filming a TV series based on Barbara Taylor Bradford's A Woman of Substance have been spotted across Yorkshire.
The new eight-part remake comes 40 years after a 1985 adaptation became the most-watched programme in Channel 4's history.
Production teams have recently been seen recording at Barnsley Town Hall, Ilkley Moor and Brodsworth Hall and Gardens near Doncaster.
Taylor Bradford's 1979 novel has sold 30 million copies, with a memorial service to the novelist held in London on Thursday.
Brenda Blethyn, Jessica Reynolds, Lenny Rush and Will Mellor star in the latest adaptation, with the series written by Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley.
Lisa Brambani saw a "mass of caravans and cars" on Ilkley Moor while out for a morning run in May.
"As I approached I was asked to wait a few minutes as they were shooting a scene up on the rocks," she said.
"I have never seen the film but I remember reading the book."
She added: "I have always been a fan of Barbara Taylor Bradford, her being a Yorkshire lass."
A Woman of Substance follows the life of Emma Harte, a business woman who works her way up from poverty in Leeds to riches in New York.
Barnsley councillor Robin Franklin said he hoped the filming would showcase the town's "amazing buildings and heritage".
"We're really pleased to welcome the production company to Barnsley Town Hall," he said.
"It's another great opportunity to put Barnsley on the national stage."
According to the Local Democracy Service, film crews arrived in Barnsley at the start of June and recently completed recording the scenes.
The 1985 series was also filmed in Yorkshire and featured locations including Brimham Rocks and Yorkshire Dales villages Aysgarth and Middleham.
Taylor Bradford was born in Armley, Leeds, and died aged 91 in November.
The memorial service for Taylor Bradford took place at St Bride's Church in Fleet Street, with attendees including barrister Cherie Blair, TV presenter Fern Britton and journalist Eve Pollard.
Jakeways said it was an "incredible thrill" to bring back the "inspirational" TV series.
"I was a child in the 1980s, when A Woman of Substance was on every bookstand, every glass-topped coffee table and hidden, well-thumbed, under every pillow.
"The original Channel 4 adaptation was packed full of rolling Yorkshire hills, hairspray, shoulder pads and heaving bosoms and I desperately wanted in."
The new series is produced by The Forge Entertainment and will air on Channel 4 next year.

Tennis Reporter Gets Ripped For 'Unprofessional' Emma Raducanu Question originally appeared on The Spun. Emma Raducanu has taken a very calm approach to her career on and off the court, but that hasn't stopped the tennis community from speculating about her personal life. Advertisement It was announced this month that Raducanu will team up with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles at the US Open later this summer. They actually practiced together at Wimbledon earlier this week. Raducanu confirmed that her practice session with Alcaraz was in partnership with Evian. They're both ambassadors for the company. That hasn't stopped people from speculating about their friendship. During a media session this Saturday afternoon, Raducanu was asked about her dynamic with Alcaraz. There have been some rumors about them dating, but that hasn't been confirmed. "There's been lots of chatter online about your friendship with Carlos," a reporter asked. "Is there any truth behind the rumors?" Advertisement Raducanu replied, "We're just good friends." That ended up being the last question she faced for the day. "Extremely unprofessional to ask," one fan said. "Tennis reporter should not ask such questions," a social media user wrote. "Honestly .. what passes for journalists these days," another fan asked. "This is so cringe, like for this to move into mainstream media is ugh. Leave it alone because you're making everyone uncomfortable," one person commented. Advertisement The reporter who asked Raducanu this question has not yet revealed themselves. As for Raducanu, she's hoping to silence all the outside noise and make a run at Wimbledon. She made it to the fourth round of the tournament last year before losing to Lulu Sun. On Monday afternoon, Raducanu will kick off her quest for a Wimbledon title against Mingge Xu. Tennis Fans Want Reporter Fired For 'Tacky' Carlos Alcaraz Question
Tennis Fans Want Reporter Fired For 'Tacky' Carlos Alcaraz Question originally appeared on The Spun. With the 2025 Wimbledon Championships on the horizon, Carlos Alcaraz is trending because of his life off the court. Advertisement Earlier this month, Alcaraz asked Emma Raducanu to be his partner for mixed doubles at the US Open. She was more than willing to accept his offer. Once their partnership for the final Grand Slam tournament of the year was confirmed, fans started speculating about their connection. That speculation only grew louder when Alcaraz and Raducanu were spotted practicing together at Wimbledon. Raducanu later revealed they were working on something with Evian since they're both ambassadors for the brand. Despite their best efforts to keep the focus on tennis, Alcaraz and Raducanu haven't been able to dodge questions from the public. On Saturday afternoon, Raducanu was asked about her dynamic with Alcaraz. An unidentified reporter was wondering if there's a potential romance brewing behind the scenes. In fact, some fans want this reporter to face consequences for this question. "Tennis reporters should not ask such questions," one fan said. "This is getting ridiculous," a second fan wrote. "It is none of our business, leave them alone," a third fan commented. "Tennis reporters are so unprofessional. Some reporters, especially those from the UK. It is yet another example of the circuits, particularly the @wta failing to monitor the press conferences and protect their players," an Instagram user wrote. Advertisement "Leave them alone and let it happen organically if you do like them as a couple. Tacky otherwise, but it's the media so what else is new," another social media user said. As of now, the reporter hasn't apologized for their question about Alcaraz and Raducanu. Hopefully, this bizarre situation doesn't become the top story at Wimbledon this upcoming week. Kerry Katona shows true colours in relationship with hunky Celebs Go Dating boyfriend
Kerry Katona has come under fire after her hunky new partner's ex accused her of stealing her man. Mum-of-five Kerry has been in a love bubble with personal trainer Paolo Margaglione, 33, after meeting him on Celebs Go Dating in May. But Paolo's ex, Jessica Smith, 25, claims she was already in a relationship with the dad-of-two – and completely unaware he was filming the dating show, as OK! reports. 'He lied to me the entire time we were together. It was horrendous,' said Jessica, who is a warehouse manager from Holmfirth, Yorkshire. I do not believe that he has one single feeling for Kerry. He only cares about fame and he'll be happy he's now being put out there.' Devastated Jessica spoke out after seeing snaps of Kerry, 44, and Paolo kissing outside a London hotel. She claims he 'repeatedly lied' about taking part in the show – which also stars Love Island's Olivia Hawkins and The Chase's Mark Labbett – and that he told her he was travelling to London for business meetings when he was in fact filming scenes with smitten Kerry. But a source close to the former Atomic Kitten star, who is keeping tight-lipped over the furore, has said that after experiencing her fair share of romantic betrayals herself, she would never knowingly make a move on another woman's man. 'She's not a man-stealer and it's not something nice to be accused of, but she knows her truth and won't let it ruin things,' the source said. 'Kerry isn't going to let anyone rain on her parade.' Jess went on to claim that Paolo, who she started dating after he contacted her on Instagram, continued to send her loved-up messages while he was filming the E4 reality show, even telling her he wanted to marry her. But Paolo, who has two daughters from a previous relationship, denies any wrongdoing. 'I was never in a relationship with Jess,' he said. 'We only met up around five times. I was honest with her that I had been offered to go on a dating show and if it were to come to fruition, I would take the opportunity.' He continued, 'I made it clear to Jess that we had to stop talking and seeing each other as I had been offered to go on the show. I have nothing bad to say about Jess – she's a great girl.' Kerry's rumoured new romance comes eight months after her shock split from her former fiancé Ryan Mahoney, who she dated for six years. The pair met online and lived together in Cheshire, with personal trainer Ryan proposing to Kerry in 2020. The relationship broke down last November and Kerry later revealed they had parted over a 'breach of trust'. She said at the time, 'We are no longer together and it's been a really tough week. I never in a million years thought this would happen.' Three-times-married Kerry wed her first husband, Westlife star Brian McFadden, in 2002 and they have two daughters, Molly, 23, and Lilly-Sue, 22. She went on to marry taxi driver Mark Croft, welcoming daughter Heidi, 18, and son Max, 17, before the relationship crumbled after three years together. In 2014, she tied the knot with George Kay, the father of her youngest daughter Dylan-Jorge, 11. Tragically, former rugby league player George died in 2019 following a drug overdose. Celebrity Big Brother star Kerry is certainly no stranger to drama when it comes to her love life, but the source says she has 'learnt the hard way' when it comes to fame-hungry partners and won't be fooled again. 'She's felt that betrayal,' the source said. 'But she's got a smart head on her shoulders and she's totally happy and comfortable with Paolo. 'She has never felt or looked better, and a hunky man was really the only thing missing from her life. She's making good money and everything is on her terms. She's not being controlled or led by anyone.' READ MORE: Save £25 on Stacey Solomon's go-to blender that 'achieves perfect results'
